Chapter 14 Extreme Cold I Laugh at the Outside World's Disturbance.
The Ice Age began.
A heavy snowfall covered Starlight City in the south. People were discussing it online, some complaining while others were grateful.
Little did they know that snowstorms and extreme cold were not temporary; they would persist and intensify.
Ultimately, it would lead to a catastrophe no one could bear.
At that moment, Steven was lying comfortably on his sofa at home, enjoying the cozy 77 degrees Fahrenheit inside his safe house. He was savoring a chilled Budweiser beer, feeling content.
Suddenly, Steven's phone rang.
He picked it up and saw messages from various chat groups, including his former classmates, interest groups, and the homeowners' group in his neighborhood.
[Why did it suddenly snow so heavily? The weather forecast didn't mention this!]
[I was woken up in the middle of the night and had to turn on the heating.]
[Forget it. Our crappy heater is not doing its job properly. It's getting colder by the minute.]
[I wonder how long this cold weather will last. I haven't even bought winter clothes yet!]
Everyone was expressing their feelings and opinions.
However, Steven could sense that most people didn't consider the sudden cold as abnormal; instead, they seemed somewhat surprised.
Steven knew it was only temporary.
Yawning, he decided not to read further.
He returned to his warm bed, covered himself with a velvet blanket, and peacefully closed his eyes.
His bed was very comfortable; it was a high-end piece brought from a Walmart warehouse.
The mattress, which was rumored to be the same as a famous female celebrity's, was worth $400,000.
Outside, the heavy snow continued to fall, the cold wind howling. Inside, the fireplace was burning brightly, creating a pleasant temperature.
In such a cozy environment, Steven quickly drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Steven was awakened by his phone ringing.
Opening his eyes, he saw that Alice was calling him.
Being disturbed by his good dream, Steven was naturally soured.
He answered the phone, sounding annoyed, "Why are you calling me so early in the morning?"
Hearing Steven's cold tone, Alice hesitated for a moment but then said, "Steven, it's so cold outside today! Did you stock up on supplies earlier, knowing about the extreme cold?"
Alice's voice trembled as if she was struggling with something.
Steven smirked mockingly. As expected, the hypocrite must have some difficult situation if she's coming to him.
Nonchalantly, he replied, "A friend mentioned it to me casually, but I didn't expect the temperature to drop so drastically."
He threw off the blanket, feeling the high temperature in the room, making him sweat.
Steven put on his slippers and walked outside. Looking out of the floor-to-ceiling window, he was taken aback by the familiar scene.
The snow had engulfed the entire city, obscuring the streets and bushes. The outlines of the city buildings were barely visible, with many houses' ground floors submerged halfway.
And the snowfall continued, with no signs of stopping, the feather-like snowflakes falling incessantly to the ground.
On the phone, Alice continued, "No wonder you stocked up on so many things. Steven, you should have told me about the extreme cold in advance. I'm freezing here!"
Frowning, Steven couldn't believe she had the audacity to complain to him.
He hung up the phone, tossing it aside, and then took a relaxing hot shower in the bathroom.
Afterward, he retrieved a piece of top-grade A5 Wagyu beef from the space and had steak with pasta for breakfast.
While having breakfast, he turned on the TV.
As the temperature had just dropped and there was no power outage yet, the TV was functioning normally.
Even if there were a blackout, Steven had prepared various backup power sources--dozens of generators and a vast amount of gasoline.
In terms of energy, he was set for at least three hundred years!
Switching to the morning news channel, Steven watched, though he had already known the situation outside.
But at times like this, observing the outside conditions was a form of entertainment.
On the news channel, both anchors were clad in thick-down jackets.
Considering that TV stations had central air conditioning and were prioritized for power supply, the need for such warm clothing indicated the temperature had reached a point where even the central air conditioning was struggling to cope.
The female anchor spoke calmly into the camera, "Last night, a strong cold front hit various parts of the globe, causing a drastic change in global temperatures. The temperature drop ranged from 158 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit."
"The meteorological department is investigating the cause of this cold front."
"In the coming days, please take care to keep warm and avoid frostbite."
"If unnecessary, try not to go outside."
"The authorities will handle this issue properly, so please do not panic."
"Do not spread or believe rumors, and do not engage in hoarding supplies. The snow disaster will soon pass."
Listening to the anchor's words, Steven felt disdainful.
After the Ice Age arrived, survival depended on oneself. Those foolish enough to stay at home doing nothing would be among the first to perish.
In the top right corner of the TV screen, the outdoor temperature in Starlight City had dropped to a staggering minus 149 degrees Fahrenheit!
Just the day before, the daytime high in Starlight City was 59 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning the temperature had plummeted by 90 degrees Fahrenheit in one go!
Steven shrugged. This level of temperature drop was exactly like in his previous life.
But now, dressed in pajamas, sipping red wine, and enjoying steak with pasta, he felt none of the cold outside.
After all, he had spent $1.1 million to build his safe house, emphasizing insulation, so the indoor temperature hardly dissipated.
At that moment, Steven's phone rang again.
Curious, he wanted to see what his neighbors, who had mocked him before, were talking about.
The first message he saw was from Alice.
Alice: [Steven, why did you hang up on me?]
Alice: [The snow outside is so heavy, I can't go out. You bought a lot of food, right? Can you lend me some? I'll repay you when the snow disaster is over.]
Raising an eyebrow, Steven smirked coldly.
Alice was clever, knowing that with such heavy snow, food would become very expensive.
Not wanting to go out in the extreme cold o minus 150 degrees Fahrenheit, she sought food from Steven.
But Steven knew this disaster would last a long time and had no intention of giving Alice any food!
In his past life, he had been deceived by this hypocrite, giving her a lot of his food.
In the end, she even caused Steven's death and wanted to make soup with his ribs!
Steven only wanted to tease her now and watch her die miserably.
He thought it, and a sly smile crept onto his face as he replied to Alice's message.
Steven: [Why didn't you say so earlier? I've already eaten most of the food I stocked up. Look, I just cooked steak for breakfast!]
After sending the message, Steven took a selfie with himself, the steak, and the wine on the table.
He sent the photo to Alice, deliberately including his pajama-clad appearance.
