Chapter 270 Awaiting Battle

Shawn and Yosef were feeling a mix of shame and relief. They were bummed about their failed rescue mission but stoked that the base was solid, well-armed, and packed with talent.

Now, they figured taking down Steven would be a piece of cake, no way they'd mess it up.

After the combat meeting wrapped up, Charles said, "Alright, let's roll out. Let's aim to wrap this up in three hours, maybe even one!"

Charles had a laid-back grin on his face. He wasn't sweating this mission at all.

In his head, all the planning didn't matter when you had sheer power. They were a squad of elite, well-equipped soldiers, after all!

'Seriously, could we really screw up taking down a regular guy with some supernatural ability? That'd be a joke,' he thought.

Charles started organizing his fifty men, giving them jobs like carrying explosives and sealing off the whole Emerald Estate.

As for Shawn and his rescue team, who weren't as good in a fight as the special forces, they were told to stay back in Cox Town.

"We'll be back soon! Shawn and Yosef will lead the way. The rest of you, just hang here and watch our stuff," Charles told them.

Shawn and Yosef quickly replied, "Got it!"

But Yosef leaned in and quietly asked Charles, "Did the higher-ups say what to do about the town's residents?"

Charles glanced at Cox Town and shrugged, "No rush. They can't go anywhere. Let's deal with Steven first, then we'll ask Mr. Martin for instructions."

Shawn and Yosef nodded and kept quiet.

Charles led the team, and the soldiers, loaded with weapons, explosives, and gear, started heading towards Emerald Estate.

They were all decked out in white armor, with their weapons wrapped in white cloth, looking like ghosts in the snow.

You'd barely notice them unless you looked real close.

They reached the outskirts of the estate, where the tall gate still stood, with "Emerald Estate" written in big, fancy letters.

Shawn said, "The shelter's right in the middle of the villa area, super obvious! They've got snipers, so we shouldn't just charge in."

Last time, their group of thirty got wrecked by Steven. His aim was deadly accurate, picking them off from hundreds of feet away.

If they hadn't used the houses for cover to escape, they might've all been dead that day.

Charles nodded and looked at a few soldiers. "You guys find good spots and keep an eye on that house!"

Three soldiers with Magnum Sniper Rifles stepped up, spread out, and took different positions.

They'd already mapped out the sniper points before coming.

Seeing this, Shawn whispered, "But guns don't seem to work on that guy."

Charles gave Shawn a long look and said, "Shawn, you're not a natural Psychic, so you don't get the ins and outs of Psychic abilities. Don't just look at the surface. I doubt anyone can really survive bullets. Maybe it's an ability we don't understand."

"If it's an ability, and not that he's some invisible monster, we can take him out with one shot, and it'll be easier for everyone," Charles added.

Charles's words made Shawn realize something but also feel a bit bummed.

Shawn wished he could be a natural Psychic like Charles.

Charles was busy organizing the attack on the shelter, making sure everything was in order from the outskirts of Emerald Estate.

They had plenty of time, manpower, and ammo, so there was no need to rush.

Meanwhile, the top two floors of the shelter were pretty much cleared out. Anything that was hard to move stayed put, but everything else had been taken underground.

The shelter was well-lit with bright fluorescent lights, so it didn't feel dark or gloomy.

Steven was chilling in the living room on the first underground floor, flipping through a paper book. The screen in front of him showed various surveillance footage from inside and outside the shelter.

Since the apocalypse hit, Steven had settled into a slower-paced life, with no need to work.

He'd even started to enjoy reading.

Some of the books were from the library, and some were from Brock's old collection.

The book in Steven's hand was "Ordinary."

Reading it now still made him feel a bit emotional.

Those ordinary days were long gone, and the world had turned into a frozen wasteland.

But humans, with their tough spirit, would fight to survive no matter how hard things got.

Elinor, barefoot, curled up next to him, leaning on his shoulder, enjoying the quiet, warm moment.

But then, Steven noticed something odd out of the corner of his eye.

He looked up at the TV on the wall.

Among the hundreds of surveillance cameras, a thick white smoke was creeping towards the shelter from all directions.

Steven slowly closed his book and said calmly, "They're here!"

Elinor quickly grabbed Steven's sneakers and squatted in front of him to help him put them on.

But Steven stayed unusually calm, just putting on his gear and then pulling out the Magnum Sniper Rifle from his extradimensional space, carrying it as he headed upstairs.

"You all stay here and don't come up!" Steven told Elinor.

This was a man's fight, and there was no need for the women to get involved.

Elinor looked at him and nodded vigorously.

She knew she couldn't do anything for Steven right now.

And she hoped her only ability would never need to be used on him.

Steven walked up to the first floor, where thick smoke was everywhere outside, already blocking the view.

Except for the 3 feet around the outer wall, he couldn't see anything else.

"Are they afraid of being sniped by me? Anyway, it's a smart move," Steven muttered.

After all, Steven was up against highly trained professional soldiers, and anything could happen.

"So next, they should be coming to blow up the shelter!" A meaningful smile appeared on Steven's lips.

That was the only real threat to him.

But he already had a plan to defend against it.

Obviously, the enemy didn't know what his ability was.

Since absorbing Brittany's Supernatural ability, Steven's own powers had gotten a major boost.

His Dimension Door had also grown in scale.

Even the shockwave from an explosion could be swallowed into it!

He'd tested this in the basement with a grenade.

That's why he was confident he could take on such a militarized organization.
