Chapter 426 Unclarity

Thousands of zombies simultaneously turned their heads and ran in the opposite direction of the shelter.

This scene left Steven and his group dumbfounded.

It was the first time they had seen zombies feeling fear and making a strategic retreat!

Steven kept a wary eye on the retreating zombies, his face tense. "One thing's clear—someone's pulling the strings on these zombies. When they figured out they couldn't take us down, they backed off to save their little army."

Lily frowned, mulling it over before shaking her head. "I can't wrap my head around how anyone could control thousands of zombies at once. And these things? They're frozen solid—you can't even kill them by chopping off their heads. If someone had that kind of power, they'd be running Starlight City by now. There's more dead bodies out there than anything else!"

Steven looked at the pile of broken, charred bodies on the ground, some of which were still twitching.

They were just remnants of limbs, yet they had terrifying vitality, making it impossible to know how to kill them.

The thought of possibly facing more of these zombies in the future made Steven's head ache.

"We must figure out what the hell these zombies are, who's behind them, and how they're doing it. Otherwise, we're never gonna catch a break."

Steven walked over and tried to collect some of the zombie fragments into his extradimensional space.

The process went smoothly, indicating that they were indeed dead bodies without biological characteristics.

But the fact that they were still moving was baffling.

Steven felt increasingly perplexed.

He tossed the flamethrower to Earl, "Burn these zombies to ashes! At least we know now that they can still be burned to death."

No one could clearly explain everything that had happened today.

Perhaps ever since that day when thousands of bodies disappeared from the battlefield, a mysterious suspense had been hanging over everyone's heads.

And with today's zombie crisis, it was impossible to ignore it any longer.

Although they successfully repelled this batch of zombies, everyone's faces were filled with confusion.

Back at the shelter, Elinor, Nora, and the others were still in shock.

Their pale faces showed that they had been scared out of their wits.

After all, who had ever seen zombies more ferocious than dogs?

And a whole horde of them!

If it hadn't been Steven and his group here today, even fully armed soldiers would have been torn apart!

"Could there really be ghosts?" Nora patted her chest in fear, her eyes full of dread.

Emilia frowned slightly, "It's hard to say. With such things, it's better to believe they exist than not. Maintaining reverence is the best!"

Some things cannot be clearly explained with current human scientific knowledge, but they do exist.

Steven didn't speak but sat on the couch, pondering the strange events that had happened recently.

These thousands of zombies came from West Mountain Base.

When he, Earl, and Henry went to West Mountain Base to search for supplies, they had felt something unusual around them.

But at that time, he thought it was just his imagination and didn't pay much attention.

When they left, he sealed the entrance to West Mountain Base, partly for peace of mind.

And recently, those soldiers' bodies disappeared and entered Floral Springs Subway Station.

There must be some big secret behind all these signs!

As the women debated whether this was some kind of supernatural thing, Steven cut in with a firm tone, "Someone's pulling the strings on those bodies. Those zombies dodged my Dimension Door and bolted when things got hot. That's not mindless behavior—it's calculated. There's gotta be a Psychic out there, controlling them, and they've got their sights set on us."

Steven's words made sense, and everyone nodded in agreement.

But Elinor wasn't sold yet. "Okay, but why us? We haven't pissed anyone off. Lately, it's just been Silverlake and Emberwick holding grudges. But if they had this kind of firepower, why not unleash it during the fight? Why wait till now?"

Steven shook his head. "It all went down too fast—we're not gonna crack this overnight. For now, let's hunker down in the shelter. This place is locked tight; those zombies aren't getting in. We'll play it by ear."

Then it hit him, and he turned to Cindy. "Cindy, keep tabs on the other factions over the next few days. Find out if this is just us or if it's hitting all of Starlight City."

Cindy nodded. "Okay, leave it to me!"

Steven then turned to Henry and Lily. "Henry, Lily, you two need to check yourselves—thoroughly. Make sure those zombies didn't get a scratch on you. If there's some kind of zombie virus, we can't take any chances."

As soon as Steven said it, everyone subtly backed up a step or two from Henry and Lily.

After all, in every zombie flick, a bite or scratch is a one-way ticket to infection.

Henry and Lily got it—Steven's caution made sense. "Alright, we'll play along with the check."

Steven smiled and held up his hands. "Relax, it's not about trust—it's about staying safe."

Truth was, they were all kitted out in bulletproof gear, so the odds of a zombie getting a bite in were slim. But Steven wasn't taking any chances.

He and Elinor gave Henry and Lily a once-over.

No wounds, no scratches—just clean slates. Steven finally let out a breath.

"Alright, you're good to go!" he said, flashing a smile at Henry and Lily.

After sending Henry and Lily away, only Steven and Elinor were left in the medical room.

Steven looked at Elinor, his tone becoming serious. "Elinor, there's something I need you to do!"

Elinor immediately realized what Steven wanted her to do. "You want me to study the zombies?"

Steven nodded. "I need to figure out if these zombies are carrying some kind of virus or if they're being puppeteered by some psychic with freaky powers. If it's the virus, that's a full-blown nightmare—Starlight City could get wiped out. It could go national, even global. But if it's the psychic thing…"

His expression darkened. He took a deep breath and said slowly, "Then we're dealing with something that's way more dangerous than we ever imagined."

Elinor looked worried and walked over to gently hug Steven from behind. "Either result is very frightening!"

Steven held her hand gave a soft smile. "Don't overthink it. We've got enough on our plate just keeping ourselves safe. As long as this shelter holds, we're good."

Elinor nodded, feeling that Steven made a lot of sense.

Overthinking would only bring deeper despair.

Steven took out a piece of flesh from the extradimensional space and placed it on the workbench.

The moment it hit the surface, it started squirming like a worm chopped in half.

Even though it was partially frozen, it was still kicking with crazy vitality.

Elinor, a seasoned doctor, was floored. "This is amazing!"

Steven warned, "Careful. We still don't know if it's a virus or how contagious it is."

Elinor gave a small smirk. "Relax, remember what I do for a living."

She deftly grabbed the flesh with tweezers, dropped it into a tray, and capped it with a glass dome. "I'll need some time to dig into this."

"No rush. We've got time. If this crisis stays at this level, we can manage it," Steven said.

Elinor sighed. "True, our firepower's top-tier in Starlight City. But if this zombie mess hits other factions, especially something like the Snowfall Cult... that's gonna be a nightmare."
