Chapter 239 Leak
While munching on their food, Gavin and the crew tried to get the lowdown on the official organization.
"So, when's the government gonna handle this snow mess?" Gavin asked, pulling out a bottle of wine he'd been saving for ages and pouring a glass for Zane.
Zane downed the wine in one go, feeling a warm buzz spread through his chest and belly, making his face turn red.
He didn't say a word, just picked up his fork and kept eating.
Brittany, sitting nearby, chimed in, "Don't sweat it. The government's already got a plan for the snow disaster and they'll roll it out soon."
Hearing that, Gavin and the others looked relieved. "That's awesome! These crappy days are getting old. We're at our limit. Only the government can sort out this snow mess and get us back to living good lives."
A villager couldn't help but ask, "Is there an expert who can tell us when this snow will stop?"
Brittany smiled and said, "Soon, it won't last much longer. See, it's already easing up a bit? At most, it'll stop in a few months."
Zane shot her a quick glance.
Brittany stayed cool, like she was telling the truth.
Zane, not much of a talker, kept eating in silence.
Brittany took a sip of wine, her face getting a bit rosy. In the freezing cold, she couldn't resist a little of the good stuff.
Even though she wasn't really bothered by the cold, the buzz from the alcohol was too tempting. But she didn't dare drink too much, since she was on a mission.
After a glass, Brittany started asking the villagers, "Has anyone in your village been acting weird lately?"
Gavin frowned a bit at that. Not just him, everyone in Cox Village immediately thought of Earl.
But Gavin played dumb, "What do you mean by weird? Everyone here is perfectly normal."
Brittany and her team were mainly checking out nearby towns and resource spots. They also had a special mission to find Psychics and bring them back to the base.
Since natural Psychics were super rare, their base hadn't found many yet. So Brittany asked casually, not expecting much.
But as a soldier, she was sharp. She noticed the villagers' reactions.
She put down her wine glass and said calmly, "I mean people who have changed physically and have abilities beyond normal folks. You all live together, so if anyone's changed, you'd know. If you give us useful info, the government will reward you big time!"
The villagers looked down, their eyes flickering, thinking about Brittany's offer.
But no one spoke up.
With Gavin, the clan leader and village head, there, it wasn't their place to talk.
Behind Gavin's gold-rimmed glasses, his small eyes flickered with uncertainty.
Brittany was definitely talking about Earl.
Should he rat out Earl?
Gavin didn't rush. Instead, he asked, "Can I ask, what does the government want with these mutant folks?"
Brittany got more convinced that the people of Cox Village knew something about Psychics.
She gave Gavin a friendly smile and said, "These individuals are valuable assets to the country. We need their abilities to help rebuild our homeland!"
"If you know someone like that, you gotta report it ASAP! The government will reward you big time," she added.
Gavin nodded. "Got it!"
He lowered his head to pour more wine, a sly smile flickering in his eyes.
It sounded good, but he hadn't seen any real benefits.
Earl was the village's biggest treasure!
Without him, who knows what would happen to the village in the future.
No way he was handing him over!
"I'll keep an eye out. If I find someone like that, I'll let you know right away!" Gavin said, pulling out his phone and smiling as he handed it to Brittany, "Let's exchange numbers!"
But Brittany's expression suddenly changed. She looked up at Gavin, half-smiling, and said, "Are you hiding something from me? Lying to us is a really bad move."
The room got tense real quick.
Everyone was scared and didn't know what to say.
Only Zane kept eating like nothing was happening.
Gavin's hand froze in mid-air. He suddenly looked puzzled and frowned, "No! What do you mean? I'm totally loyal to the country and would never lie!"
Brittany asked calmly, "Are you sure there's no Psychic around here? Think twice before you answer. This is a big deal for the nation. Don't hide anything, or you'll be in serious trouble!"
Brittany was really into this. If she found a natural Psychic, she'd get major credit from the organization.
She could tell Gavin and the others were hiding something important.
These regular folks weren't great at hiding their feelings and couldn't lie well.
Gavin's lie was exposed, and his smile got awkward.
But then, an idea hit him.
Gavin quickly said, "If you put it that way, I do have a suspect. But that person isn't from Cox Village, so we don't know much. That's why I didn't speak up."
Brittany asked, "Who is it?"
Gavin gritted his teeth and said, "His name is Steven. He lives in Emerald Estate across the river from us!"
The mention of Steven's name sent a wave of bitter anger through Cox Village. Every family had lost someone that night, and the pain was still raw.
Hearing the name "Steven," Brittany's eyes lit up.
The special task she got mentioned this name.
If there were no surprises, the Steven Gavin mentioned was the guy she needed to check out.
"What a coincidence!" Brittany muttered to herself.
She could use this chance to gather info about Steven from the villagers of Cox Village.
