Chapter 268 The Powerful Lineup
Steven, loaded up with the explosives Aubrey made, stepped out of the shelter, ready for action.
He had to get all the defenses set up around the place before the main crew from West Mountain Base showed up.
First thing, he planted a ton of bombs around the shelter.
Even if the enemy knew about the traps, they'd still have to get through the bomb-filled zone to get close.
It was a game everyone understood.
Steven wasn't sure how much damage these would do to the Psychics, but he was willing to try anything that might hurt the enemy.
In no time, he buried over fifty bombs in the snow around the shelter.
He could blow them up anytime with the detonator.
Next up was setting up the surveillance system.
Emerald Estate had plenty of cameras.
This place was a top-notch luxury villa community with first-class security.
But since it had been abandoned for a while and had no stable power, the surveillance system was busted.
Steven fixed the circuits and hooked up the cameras to the shelter's power.
Then he had Cindy hack into the security system so he could keep an eye on the whole community.
With that, Steven's initial setup was pretty much done.
The upcoming fight with West Mountain Base was all about thinking on his feet since no one could predict what would happen.
Steven didn't tell Henry about this.
When it came to heavy military assaults, Henry might not be much help even if he showed up.
It was better to have Henry outside; he might come in handy as a surprise.
Two days later, Charles led his team out of West Mountain Base, heading towards Cox Town.
For this mission, he brought fifty members of Team A, twelve of whom were modified Psychics.
Including himself, there were four powerful captain-level Psychics.
The rest of Team A were also top-notch, either elite special forces soldiers or experts from other fields.
Their mission was to take over the shelter at Emerald Estate and capture Steven.
But Charles and his team were super confident.
With their current lineup, dealing with a single Psychic, or even a thousand-strong force, would be a walk in the park!
Among the group, only Lily had her own secret plans.
Her goal wasn't to defeat Steven. She was actually planning to escape with her students afterward.
Leaving West Mountain Base, she needed to find a safe place to survive.
Steven was one of her potential allies.
If Steven could hold off the attack from West Mountain Base, she’d think about teaming up with him.
But if Steven couldn't, she'd have to find another way.
Over fifty of West Mountain Base's elite soldiers set off in a grand procession.
Most of them rode sleds, and Peter had even approved the use of the base's only snowmobile.
In times when gasoline was super scarce, this snowmobile was a big deal for West Mountain Base.
But to transport all the explosives they had prepped, they had to use it.
The snowmobile was lugging two heavy boxes, making it sink into the snow.
Even though it was built for snow, it still had a hard time moving.
This just showed how much explosive West Mountain Base had prepped to take down Steven!
Charles and his team moved forward slowly.
By noon, they had only made it to Cox Village in Cox Town.
Shawn and his crew had been waiting outside the village for them to show up.
Earl, who Shawn and his team saw as a future member, was also called over.
Lately, Shawn had been treating Earl really well.
To make up for his screw-ups during this mission, he needed to present Earl as a win to get back in the organization's good graces.
After waiting forever, Earl was getting antsy when he suddenly saw flashes of light on the horizon.
In the snow, over fifty soldiers slowly appeared, all decked out in white combat uniforms, their weapons wrapped in white cloth.
When the fifty-plus soldiers came into view, they gave Earl a serious sense of dread.
He might have realized that these fifty-plus people were about to unleash a violent storm upon Emerald Estate!
Earl swallowed hard, silently praying that this storm wouldn't swallow up all of Cox Town.
The special forces team rolled into Cox Village.
Shawn and Yosef quickly stepped up to salute. "Captain Reed! Finally, you're here!"
Gavin and the other leaders of Cox Town followed behind, waiting for Charles to call them over.
Earl's eyes scanned the crowd.
He knew a lot of these people were powerful, especially the Psychics.
But with over fifty elite soldiers, even the most ordinary ones were battle-hardened vets, which meant none of them were pushovers.
Earl couldn't tell who the Psychics were.
At that moment, the snowmobile at the back slowly stopped.
The special forces soldiers made way.
A short soldier in a white combat uniform got off.
Three people followed him.
One was super tall, almost 6 feet.
Another was a slender, agile woman.
The third had a fur collar around his neck, brown-red leather gloves, and held a black broadsword.
The short soldier walked up to Shawn and Yosef, slowly took off his bulletproof helmet, revealing an unremarkable face.
"Thanks for your hard work!" Charles said with a faint smile to the rescue team soldiers.
But Shawn and the others felt embarrassed hearing Charles' words.
This time, they had set out as a rescue team, but came back empty-handed, their own ranks thinned. Talk about hard work? It was a bitter joke.
Charles, however, said calmly, "That guy is not easy to deal with. We underestimated him before. So, don't beat yourselves up too much."
Shawn and the others were moved by his words. "Captain Reed!"
Charles' eyes suddenly turned cold, like two sharp knives. "But the guy who killed my brothers won't have a good end! Now that we're here, his fate is sealed!"
Shawn straightened up, and seeing the people behind Charles, he also believed that Steven's fate was pretty much decided.
"Of course, he deserves it!" Shawn said.
