Chapter 276 The Support of Cox Town
Knowing the risks, Henry still insisted on coming to help, which really touched Steven.
"Henry, thanks, but you better stay put for now. There are soldiers all around me," Steven said.
"If you come, you'll definitely run into them. They've got numbers, advanced weapons, and a few Psychics. I'm worried you'll get hurt," he added.
Henry shot back, "You saved my life before. The stable life I have now is all because of you. I can't just sit back and do nothing while you're in danger!"
He continued, "Don't worry, I've got years of army experience! I fought on the battlefield back in the day. These soldiers? I don't take them seriously."
Seeing Henry's determination, Steven thought for a moment. "Alright, Henry. I'm safe for now, and they can't break in. But I might need to counterattack later. Wait for my signal, and I'll let you know when I need your help to ambush them. Sound good?"
Henry nodded. "Got it. I'll wait for your signal! But Steven, if you run into any problems, tell me. Don't treat me like an outsider!"
Steven felt a warmth in his heart. 'Henry's a true friend,' he thought.
"Of course!" Steven replied.
Henry had a Physical strengthening ability, and Steven had seen his power. He could withstand Fluffy's full-speed charge with his bare hands.
Ordinary firearms couldn't harm him.
Such a powerful close-combat fighter needed to be used wisely.
Steven leaned against Elinor's soft chest, his eyes half-closed, savoring the moment and letting his thoughts drift. 'I don't need him right now. For defense and counterattack, I need to secure the defense first!'
Fluffy jumped onto Steven's lap, scratching his pants a couple of times before curling up comfortably.
Steven stroked its soft fur.
Steven, Henry, and the Mutant Cat Fluffy were a formidable fighting force.
The enemy didn't know about Fluffy and Henry, which was his hidden ace.
However, if he could get Earl to join the fight, it would be even better.
"No rush, it's just a matter of time!"
Steven smiled as he petted Fluffy's head, his right hand running from its forehead to its tail, making it lift its tail high in pleasure.
"I don't believe the soldiers from West Mountain Base can coexist peacefully with the villagers of Cox Town," Steven mumbled.
Meanwhile, Charles took people back to transport explosives, while most of the others stayed in Cox Village.
Since Charles had instructed them to prepare for a long-term battle, Shane called Earl and Gavin over.
Shane instructed them, "We're going to stay here for a while, so clear out some houses for us to live in. Also, remember to prepare meals for sixty-five people every day!"
Earl's heart skipped a beat.
Meals for sixty-five people?
He had seen how these people ate.
They were all bottomless pits.
In the post-apocalyptic world, the villagers of Cox Town only feed themselves, not daring to waste any food, just to survive a bit longer.
But with the appetite of these sixty-five soldiers, each one could eat as much as five villagers!
If this kept up, Cox Town wouldn't be able to sustain them.
Gavin's face went through a series of expressions.
After a moment, he forced a smile and said, "Of course! It's an honor to have the leaders from West Mountain Base here."
"But, any idea when you'll catch that murderer Steven?"
Gavin had thought these soldiers were here to deal with Steven. Once that was done, they'd leave.
He never expected Steven to hold his ground.
Now he just hoped the soldiers would speed things up.
Shane didn't care about Gavin's attitude. "How we act and when we act are military secrets! Don't pry! You villagers just need to provide us with food and lodging. After all, we're helping you get revenge, right?"
Shane's voice and physique were intimidating, and Gavin didn't dare argue, just nodding repeatedly.
After Shane left, Gavin straightened up and told Earl, "Earl, go build igloos quickly. These houses are for the leaders from West Mountain Base, so make sure you do a good job!"
Then Gavin called the village chiefs to prepare food for the soldiers.
The village chiefs didn't think much of it. They assumed the soldiers would leave in a day or two, so they eagerly offered the best from their villages, hoping to make a good impression and secure a future position.
Earl watched, feeling very worried.
But he had learned to keep quiet.
He knew that no matter what he said, these people wouldn't listen.
'In their eyes, no matter how strong I am, I'm just a useless fat guy!' he thought.
Earl smiled self-deprecatingly and decided not to care anymore.
He just hoped to protect himself and Julia's family.
On Steven's side, to prevent a sneak attack while he slept, he arranged for people to take turns monitoring the surveillance equipment.
He was sure the enemy's next attack would come from the same direction, so he focused on the low hill.
Although the high-definition cameras couldn't clearly capture images beyond 6500 feet in the snowstorm, any significant movement from transporting heavy explosives would be noticeable.
Afraid the other women might miss something, Steven assigned the most reliable one, Aubrey, to this task.
He also had Fluffy accompany her, as a cat's perception was much sharper than a human's.
Fluffy, being smart, accepted the job after Steven offered several boxes of fish snacks as a reward.
At other times, Steven took charge of the monitoring himself.
However, that night, the soldiers from West Mountain Base didn't make any moves against the shelter.
Although a night raid was a good option, the two upper floors of the shelter had been cleared out, leaving no light.
Charles and Shane, despite their impressive physical abilities, couldn't precisely place the explosives in the same spot as last time in the dark.
