Chapter 436 Spying

After fending off the rat swarm, the group kept moving like nothing happened.

Only some bigger rats remained, ready to pounce. To regular people, they might be a threat; but everyone here was a badass Psychic..

So, Steven and the gang weren't too bothered.

Still, Steven was a bit uneasy. "I hope all that noise didn't tip off the zombies."

Lily frowned. "What's the deal with these rats and zombies both hanging out underground?"

"Who knows, let's just keep going!" Steven didn't have time to overthink it.

The underground was creepy, and he wanted out ASAP.

They picked up the pace.

But they could always feel eyes on them from the shadows.

Those underground critters hadn't given up, just waiting for a chance to pounce.

Steven ignored them.

It wasn't until he spotted a shredded combat suit in a tunnel corner that he got a bit freaked out. "Careful, those teeth are no joke; they can rip through regular combat suits! Better keep our distance from them."

Earl worriedly said, "Think these rats hold grudges? If they follow us out, we're in trouble!"

Steven shook his head. "They probably won't. It's damp and warm down here, but freezing outside. These rats aren't arctic lemmings; even if they can handle the cold, they wouldn't be dumb enough to chase us for miles."

Outside Emberwick Base, in the subway tunnel.

Lester led a squad of elite soldiers on a recon mission.

But soon after they moved in, a rat swarm attacked.

The crazed rats surrounded them, red eyes glaring as they lunged, their knife-like teeth tearing through the soldiers' protective suits.

"These rats are freakin' monsters!"

"Watch out, don't let them bite you; they can rip through our suits!"

The soldiers' screams echoed as they used flamethrowers and rifles to fend off the rats.

The three Psychics with Lester went all out, unleashing their powers in fury.

Lester's power was [Flame Prison Fist].

His fists could shoot out raging flames, instantly turning a swarm of rats to ashes!

After a brutal ten-minute fight, they finally drove the rats away.

But eight soldiers were already dead, and many more were seriously hurt.

Lester's face turned grim.

They'd just entered the tunnel and hadn't even found the zombies yet, but they were already in bad shape thanks to the mutant rats.

A soldier pried open a giant rat's mouth, seeing the huge, sharp incisors, and couldn't help but gasp.

"If they get to the base, they might be worse than zombies!"

After a moment of silence, Lester said, "Let's keep moving! We need to find the zombies and gather intel. We can't let anything stop us!"

He couldn't turn back now; his pride wouldn't allow it..

On Steven's side, after dealing with the rat swarm.

The group kept moving, walking for ages and passing two more stations.

Finally, at the third subway station, they found the zombie horde!

They weren't hiding or attacking the group; instead, they were sprawled out in the tunnel like they were in a deep sleep.

Looking ahead, the narrow tunnel was a sea zombies!

"They're sleeping!" Henry whispered.

"Yeah, makes sense," Steven whispered back. "Even as virus hosts, they need energy to move. So, when they don't have orders, they rest in the dark."

Henry raised his flamethrower. "What do you think, should we torch them all?"

Steven looked at the sleeping zombies, remembering what Elinor had said.

These zombies still had some biological traits, more like a swarm.

If so, they needed rest and could fall into a deep sleep.

"If they can stay asleep and never wake up, there's no need to disturb them," he whispered.

Steven's thoughts were hopeful, but reality had other plans.

Not long after they showed up, a sleeping zombie suddenly opened its eyes.

More and more zombies started getting up, their twisted bodies standing in creepy poses.

Seeing the living people in front of them, they let out hoarse roars and charged!

"This is tricky." Steven frowned, stopping Henry from using the flamethrower and instead deploying the Dimension Door to block the way.

While this could clear out the regular zombies, it would definitely catch the attention of the zombie king deeper in the tunnel.

Taking down the zombie king would become much harder!

A large group of zombies rushed into the Dimension Door one after another.

Lily and the others watched with envy.

In terms of defense, Steven's attribute points were almost maxed out.

And this ability was nearly unbeatable unless hit by an overwhelming energy attack!

The zombie horde kept pouring in, but suddenly, they all stopped as if receiving some command.

So synchronized, it felt like someone had hit a pause button.

Then, the zombies stopped outside the Dimension Door's range and let out disgusting, harsh wails at Steven and the others!

"The zombie king has noticed us!" Steven said seriously.

"In that case, burn them!" Henry and Earl stepped up, aiming their flamethrowers at the zombie horde.

In the narrow tunnel, the flamethrowers could unleash their full power!

Two 50-foot-long fire dragons covered dozens of zombies in front, instantly setting them ablaze!

The burning zombies twisted and screeched.

The flames spread backward, soon engulfing hundreds of zombies.

The remaining zombies began to retreat slowly, moving out of the flames' reach.

Steven's eyes were full of caution. "The zombie king is not far from here, let's go after it!"

He put away the Dimension Door and led the group deeper.

The path ahead was completely blocked by the dense zombie horde.

They let out disgusting howls but didn't dare to attack Steven and the others, instead retreating slowly.

Due to the sheer number of zombies, using the flamethrowers was particularly satisfying, like a barbecue.

Steven's spatial Supernatural ability completely neutralized the zombie horde's abilities, making the zombies unable to lung, let alone bite. It was too overpowering.

This even gave the illusion that these zombies were very weak.

However, anyone who had seen them ravage the four major forces would never think that way.
