Chapter 105 Chelsea Narrowly Escapes Death
Caleb organized his thoughts. "Today is the first day we've met. I don't know you well yet, and you don't know me either."
Before he could finish, Ashley interrupted, "It's okay. We have plenty of time to get to know each other, and we have a long future ahead."
Caleb continued, "But our families have set a wedding date for us soon, and if we rush into marriage like this, I think you won't be able to bear it."
He believed that Ashley, being a lady of high status, wasn't someone to rush into marriage, and she wouldn't easily agree to marry him. However, the next moment, Ashley blurted out, "I accept."
Caleb was momentarily taken aback. He helplessly smiled. "What I meant was, if you don't agree to this marriage, feel free to speak up. I won't blame you."
His implication was clear enough.
But Ashley completely missed his point and said in confusion, "I agree!"
Ashley thought, 'It's hilarious that he's fretting over my possibly saying no. Little does he know, I'm thrilled to bits. I'd schedule the wedding for this very moment if I could.’
Caleb's further words were cut off as he glanced out the window, where Nathaniel's car was parked.
Chelsea walked over, opened the passenger-side door, and got in. Aurelia sat in the seat behind the driver's seat, a position she had seen as the safest in car crash videos.
After Chelsea fastened her seatbelt, she skillfully opened the glove compartment, took out a comb, and started grooming her hair as if the car belonged to her. One could imagine she already considered that spot her own.
Nathaniel checked the navigation. "I'll be heading back to the office soon. Where do you want to get off?"
Chelsea turned to him. "Nathaniel, aren't you going to have a meal with me?"
"I have things to do."
"In that case, I'll accompany you to the office and help you organize your files."
Nathaniel opened his side window, his arm resting there in frustration. "You have two choices: either get off now and take the G SUV back or get off in the city later. It's up to you."
Chelsea fell silent for a moment. "Nathaniel, are you afraid I'll disturb you? I'll just sit there quietly. I promise not to bother you. Your secretary isn't here today. I can make coffee for you."
Nathaniel had endured enough. "Chelsea, don't you have anything else to do?"
This 24-hour nonstop surveillance had kidnapped Nathaniel's personal time, pushing him to the brink of collapse. Chelsea was skilled at sensing others' emotions. She adjusted her posture, sitting up straight. "Then I'll get off in the city."
Aurelia, feeling unwell, leaned against the window in silence. The sunlight shone in, making her feel drowsy. The car smoothly drove away from the greenery towards the city.
With Nathaniel brooding, Chelsea didn't dare to ruffle his feathers any further. The three of them traveled in silence.
After about half an hour of driving, the weather turned gloomy, and rain poured down from the sky as they approached the city.
Raindrops incessantly drummed against the car windows, with occasional honking from other vehicles. The interior of the car fogged up, making the windows blurry.
Following the navigation, Nathaniel drove to an intersection and continued straight as per the traffic lights.
Aurelia wiped a clear spot on the window with her hand. Watching the large raindrops pelt the ground, she felt oddly relieved.
As she raised her hand to clear the entire glass, she heard a loud impact and screeching brakes.
Before she could react, inertia flung Aurelia against the driver's seat backrest, restrained by her seatbelt, her head hitting hard.
After the car came to a stop, Aurelia sat back in her seat, her forehead throbbing. The impact left her dazed. At that moment, the pain in her head was secondary. The constriction in her belly from the effect was uncomfortable.
As she settled back, she realized their car had been hit by another vehicle that had taken a sharp turn. She couldn't help but tremble; she had a trauma from car accidents—her mother had passed away in one. It was also a rainy day, and she had been at the scene. Her mother sat in the driver's seat, blood streaming down her head, her clothes, and the car—all covered in blood.
The ambulance arrived and took her away. After three days of being in a coma, her mother woke up briefly and passed away after saying a few words to her.
Compared to Aurelia, Chelsea seemed to be more severely injured. She let out a scream, and then her neck couldn't move. She slumped in her seat, crying weakly, "Nathaniel, I feel terrible. My heart..."
Shocked by the scare, her face turned ghostly pale, her voice on the verge of breaking.
As Chelsea spoke, her eyes darted around, checking if Nathaniel was looking at her. Then, she glanced at Aurelia in the back seat, her mind in turmoil.
After a moment's pause, Nathaniel looked towards the back seat. Aurelia didn't seem to be seriously injured, while Chelsea, who was in the passenger seat, was clearly in distress. He anxiously asked, "Chelsea, how are you feeling?"
"Nathaniel, my heart, my heart hurts..." Chelsea clutched her chest with one hand, her expression filled with agony.
"Don't worry. I'll call an ambulance right now."
Without hesitation, Nathaniel dialed 911, reporting the injuries and their location, and then settled into the long wait. Chelsea continued to cry out in pain, "Nathaniel, save me..."
Her voice weakened with each cry as if she was on the brink of death.
Nathaniel was extremely anxious, especially since the road ahead was congested with private cars and buses pushing forward, the traffic lights out of order, creating a gridlock. About fifteen minutes passed, and the arrival of the ambulance seemed distant.
Aurelia, sweating profusely, sat in her seat, enduring the dull ache, her body trembling. She was terrified; the accident had taken her mother, and she couldn't bear to lose her baby now.
She prayed fervently that her baby would be safe. If something happened to the child, her last hope would be shattered.
With all her loved ones gone, she would be left completely alone in the world, with no one to care for her. She didn't want to live all by herself, with no one to care for her.
Nathaniel got out of the car and saw a long line of vehicles ahead, uncertain how long the roadblock would last. The rain continued to pour down heavily.
After checking the map, he found an ordinary hospital about seven thousand feet away, which was not the best facility, but it should have been equipped to handle emergencies. He put away his phone, and a decision was made in his mind.
"Chelsea, hang in there. I'm going to carry you to the hospital now."
He was ready to abandon the car, periodically checking Chelsea's breathing, his entire being enveloped in extreme tension.
Nathaniel went to the passenger side, opened the door, hesitated as he took Chelsea's hand, and asked Aurelia in the back seat, "Aurelia, can you get out and hold the umbrella?"
Aurelia's mind was in turmoil, filled with thoughts of her deceased mother, Penelope, and the two unborn children. When she heard Nathaniel's words, her heart trembled. She pinched her palm hard, feeling the pain and knowing this wasn't a hallucination.
An accident had occurred on the road, and she didn't hear a greeting from him but a request to hold an umbrella for Chelsea.
At that moment, she wished for lightning to strike Nathaniel dead.
"Nathaniel, I'm not feeling well..."
Her voice trembled.
