Chapter 271 Failed to Clock In
Aurelia looked pretty shocked. Jacob was always into messing around with electronics, but she never thought the robot he’d been working on for days would have such cool features, like being able to protect people. "Jacob, is your robot really that awesome?"
Jacob puffed out his chest, looking all proud. "Totally. With the top-notch stuff Uncle gave me and my genius brain, I can build the coolest thing ever. Give me two days, and it’ll be ready to protect you."
Aurelia thought maybe it could work. If Jacob’s robot was really that good, it might actually come in handy at the office. "Jacob, you’re incredible. Mommy’s safety is in your robot’s hands then!"
Seeing Aurelia smile made Jacob happy too. "Mommy, don’t worry. I’ll scare off all the bad guys around you."
Aurelia laughed. "Mommy’s not worried about that anymore. It’s all in the past, so you don’t need to stress."
Their chat got cut off by a notification on Aurelia’s phone. They both glanced at it.
"Jacob, go play with your sister. Mommy’s got some stuff to take care of." Aurelia’s face changed as she put her phone away, clearly trying to keep Jacob from seeing it.
Jacob obediently left the room.
Standing in the hallway, Jacob was deep in thought. He’d seen the name on the screen—it was that annoying person. He also noticed how tense and serious Aurelia got when she saw the message.
After thinking it over, Jacob figured Aurelia’s crying yesterday had to do with Nathaniel.Jacob thought Aurelia was getting bullied by Nathaniel again. No way was he gonna let that slide!
Jacob rushed back to his room, locked the door, and pulled out his computer, his little fingers flying over the keyboard.
Imperick.
Nathaniel left the Heilbronn Villa and headed straight to the office.
It had been a while since he last came back, and now that he was finally in Imperick, he needed to show up and handle some urgent work.
In the car, he was stoked to see that Aurelia had accepted his friend request, which made him happier than making a few billion bucks for the company. She didn’t say much, but Nathaniel felt pretty satisfied.
If there were a hundred steps between them, he’d take every single one. She just needed to turn around.
Nathaniel excitedly typed to Aurelia, writing and deleting, then deleting and writing again, until he finally sent out a simple line: [Aurelia, have you had breakfast?]
After sending the message, his palms were sweating, and he couldn’t take his eyes off the screen, afraid of missing her reply.
After what felt like forever, he finally got a message from Aurelia: [Yes.]
Nathaniel: [I'll probably be back the day after tomorrow. There's some work here that I haven't finished. I need you to hold onto my computer for a while longer. Let me know if there's anything you want to eat, and I'll bring it back for you.]
Nathaniel felt like a teenager in love for the first time. But after a long wait, Aurelia replied with just one word: [Oh.]
Nathaniel scratched his head, not knowing what she meant by that.
After thinking it over, he looked at Zack, who was driving, and reluctantly asked, "Zack, can I ask you something?"
Zack, focused on driving, didn’t give it much thought. "Mr. Heilbronn, is there really a question you can't answer but I can?"
Nathaniel hesitated before speaking, "It's about a friend of mine. He had a fight with his wife, and now she only replies with 'oh.' Does that mean she doesn't want to talk to him?"
Zack chuckled, slowing down the car. "Mr. Heilbronn, Mrs. Heilbronn's already softened up. She doesn't want to ignore you, but she's still mad. This is the time to keep trying. If you back off now, she'll be even angrier. Just keep coaxing her!"
Nathaniel's voice deepened, "I said it's about my friend!"
Zack couldn't help but cough. "Mr. Heilbronn, tell your friend to keep pursuing her. Also, never try to win an argument with his wife. Don't attempt to reason with her. Just go along with whatever she says. If she curses, curse along with her. Whatever she says is right. Never argue with her, or he'll end up single."
Nathaniel's face turned from pale to red. He thought he might have hired the wrong assistant; Zack had dared to mock him for being single!
Nathaniel wondered if treating a woman like this wouldn't turn her into a fool. Holding back his frustration, he asked again, "So, if her clothes look bad, I can't say anything? If her makeup makes her look terrible, I have to lie and say it looks good?"
Zack was so anxious he felt like hitting the steering wheel. "Mr. Heilbronn, do you really think Mrs. Heilbronn's makeup looks bad? At our last jewelry auction, you didn't see how many men were trying to get close to her. Even the celebrities there couldn't compare."
Nathaniel shot a glare at him through the rearview mirror. "I said it's about my friend!" he snapped.
Zack quickly corrected himself. "Right, I forgot."
The car soon arrived at the Heilbronn Group building. After parking, they walked towards the building together. It was still early, and many people hadn't arrived yet. The door to the first-floor lobby was closed.
As the CEO, Nathaniel didn't need to clock in like other employees, but his access was still recorded in the system, as he needed to unlock the door. He led the way, stepping into the recognition range, still thinking about what delicious food to bring back for Aurelia.
"Clock-in failed. Please do not use an animal face to clock in!" The mechanical voice of the time clock machine interrupted Nathaniel's thoughts. He thought he had misheard and stepped forward again.
"Clock-in failed. Please do not use an animal face to clock in!" Nathaniel's face darkened immediately.
Zack, who was standing behind him, could feel the CEO's immense anger, as if he wanted to burn the door down. ",Mr. Heilbronn, maybe I should try."
Nathaniel stepped back, holding back his anger. Zack stepped forward.
"Clock-in successful." The door automatically opened. Zack stood there and thought, 'Oh no! I messed up. This time clock machine must be malfunctioning, and it's specifically targeting Nathaniel. I'm doomed! My bonus is gone.'
Nathaniel stood with his hands on his hips, staring at the malfunctioning system, his eyes deep and unreadable, making people shiver.
Zack wiped the sweat from his forehead, saying, "Mr. Heilbronn, let's bring some local desserts back for Mrs. Heilbronn. You can't find them in Coral Bay, and girls always love desserts."
Zack silently prayed. At this moment, he could only bring up Aurelia to divert Nathaniel's attention. He couldn't think of anything else.
