Chapter 53 Your Wife Doesn't Owe Her Anything
At that moment, Nathaniel was drinking with Chris and Oscar in a private room, the air thick with smoke.
Oscar stood up to turn on the exhaust fan while speaking to the man who was silently smoking on the couch. "Stop it. It's suffocating."
It had been a while since they had arrived, and Nathaniel began to smoke as soon as he entered the room.
"So, what's going on? Do you get dumped again?"
Oscar saw Nathaniel as the kind who could solve all the problems coming to him, and he knew well that the dejected look in Nathaniel’s eyes must have something to do with women. He thought, ‘That desolate look—what else could it be if not a breakup?’
Chris took a sip of his drink. "Don't worry. It's just a matter of finding someone. Unless she stays off the internet, the internet has a memory, and I'll find as long as she leaves a trace."
Chris was different from the other two. He had made his fortune through entrepreneurship. After graduating from college, he entered the internet industry and, in just a few years, turned his company into an internet giant, making it to the Fortune 500 list.
During a business gathering, he hit it off with Nathaniel and Oscar, and the three became close friends.
Chris thought Nathaniel was worried about finding Lolly, but for him, finding someone was easy. Once this mysterious woman left a trace online, he would be able to track her down.
As a cigarette burned out, Nathaniel flicked the ash with his fingertips.
He finally spoke up.
"What would you do if someone tried to tarnish your wife's reputation?"
Oscar's anger flared at the question. "I'd make sure he and his whole family paid a price for it."
Chris agreed. "I don't have a wife now, but if something like that really happened, I wouldn't let that person off."
Nathaniel adjusted his sitting position and asked, "What if that person had once saved your life?"
Oscar was confused. "Are you out of your mind? If someone saved your life, you owe that person, but your wife doesn’t. How could you confuse that together?"
Nathaniel was momentarily speechless, and at that moment, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
Nathaniel took it out to check the message, and his deep brown eyes gradually furrowed with a look of fear on his face. "I have to leave now."
He stood up abruptly, his suit jacket hanging over his arm as he headed straight for the door.
Oscar and Chris exchanged glances, finding his behavior inexplicable. He called them over for a drink, but now, after just a few words, he left.
"That is rude!"
Oscar cursed before drinking with Chris again.
Nathaniel instructed Zack as he left the club, "Go to the hospital.
"Inside the hospital room, the lights were off, and Aurelia's shallow breathing could be heard. Nathaniel couldn't help but lighten his footsteps as he approached. Through the gap in the curtains, a few faint moonbeams shone on her small face.
He gazed at Aurelia in the moonlight, her sleeping form so endearing that he felt an urge to pinch her cheek.
Just as his hand was about to touch her face, Aurelia seemed to sense something and turned over, murmuring in her sleep. She was having a nightmare. "Nathaniel..."
Nathaniel, who was about to leave, paused. He heard her call his name.
It had been so long since Nathaniel last heard that name from her, probably since Chelsea returned. This was the first time Nathaniel heard Aureli call his name, not Samuel’s, in her sleep.
He couldn't help but crouch down and pull the blanket for her.
"Nathaniel, please let me go."
Her words were sincere, each one clear and piercing. Nathaniel suddenly felt a void in his heart; even in her dreams, this woman wanted to leave.
The next day, Aurelia woke up and was startled to see Nathaniel's suit jacket at the foot of the bed. She looked around but didn't see him.
The phone rang, and she hurriedly answered it.
"Aurelia, something big has happened."
Aurelia asked anxiously, "What happened?"
"The man who threatened Chelsea yesterday was beaten up by someone and sent to the police station with three broken ribs. He's facing charges of rape, attempted murder, and burglary, and he's likely to be sentenced to death. Also, the investigation into the accident you had yesterday has revealed two police officers who were covering up for the criminals. It seems someone is seeking justice for you."
Aurelia knew who was behind all this, but Timothy didn't mention anything about Chelsea.
Nathaniel had taken care of all those who harmed her, but he let the mastermind behind it all go free.
Aurelia knew that Nathaniel must have seen the video, and all he did was to ease his guilt.
Chelsea would always hold an unshakable position in his heart, even if she did all those terrible things, even if she wanted to kill his wife.
Aurelia felt bitter in her heart, and at that moment, the housekeeper, Betty, pushed the door open.
"Mrs. Heilbronn, you must be hungry. I've brought you some oatmeal and your favorite apple pie."
Betty entered with a tray.
"Betty, who asked you to send food here?"
"It’s Mr. Heilbronn. He said you had an accident, and he's relieved that you're okay."
Aurelia's stomach happened to be empty, and the home-cooked meal was more appealing than those from the restaurant.
She ate the oatmeal while listening to Betty's chatter.
"Mr. Heilbronn seemed to have encountered something last night. He was in a bad mood. I heard him making phone calls in the study all night. I don't think he slept at all."
Aurelia responded, "That's common. You can go back to sleep."
Betty coughed, hesitating to speak.
Aurelia looked up at her. "Betty, just say what you want to say."
Aurelia was always kind to the servants, never making things difficult for them. She would give them days off on holidays and even bonuses.
Betty genuinely wanted the best for the couple.
"Mrs. Heilbronn, why don't you move back to the main bedroom? It's not good for a couple to argue all the time; it will hurt the relationship in the long run."
Aurelia let out a heavy sigh. "The problem between us is not as simple as just arguing."
Betty's eyes were filled with regret.
"Mr. Heilbronn still cares about you, but his way of expressing himself is easily misunderstood. He's just a bit proud. Don't listen to what he says. Watch what he does."
Aurelia thought for a moment and thought he hadn't done much for her.
"Betty, you don’t have to persuade me anymore."
Nathaniel had spent the night in his study and finally fell asleep in the early hours of the morning by leaning against the leather chair.
Zack called, "Mr. Heilbronn, Ms. Thompson has returned to Jade Community."
Nathaniel rubbed his temples, changed into a fresh set of clothes, and went downstairs. When he arrived at Jade Community, Nathaniel instinctively placed his thumb on the fingerprint lock but was refused.
He had forgotten that Chelsea had deleted his fingerprint and changed the password.
He knocked on the door in anger.
Chelsea had changed into clean clothes. She spent the night at the hotel with Ashley. Her clothes were torn yesterday.
She was wearing the hotel's bathrobe when she returned.
She had never suffered such a humiliation before.
At that moment, she was in no mood to be polite. There was only one person who would come to knock on her door so early.
"What are you doing here so early? Can't you let me sleep?"
