Chapter 162 A Familiar Stranger

When they brought Aurelia into the interrogation room, Nathaniel sat there like a proud lion, never bowing his head. He was born to be at the top, fearless in any situation.

The cops told her to sit across from Nathaniel. "Tell us what happened in the car. If you're honest, we can help you."

Aurelia glanced at Nathaniel. Nothing really happened in the car. Without solid evidence from the surveillance footage, the cops couldn't do much, especially with Nathaniel's influence.

Aurelia worried that if Reed found out, it would crush him in his current state. After thinking it over, she finally said, "I'm sorry, Sir. We're going through a divorce and argued this afternoon, but nothing happened."

The senior cop, skeptical, said, "Women need to know how to protect their rights. Here, you don't have to fear anyone. Tell us the truth."

Aurelia replied firmly, "Sir, I'm sorry. I want to withdraw my report."

The cop looked at Nathaniel. He hadn't looked at her or said a word, showing no threat to her.

It was her choice to withdraw the report.

The cops had no choice but to let them go.

They left the police station, Nathaniel walking ahead.

The city was already dark.

Cicadas in the trees chirped nonstop, narrating the heat of a midsummer night.

The sound of Aurelia's suitcase wheels on the ground was loud and impossible to ignore.

Nathaniel suddenly stopped and turned, his eyes icy as he glared at the suitcase. Just days ago, they were showing affection in front of the whole company, and now they were involving the police.

"Where are you planning to run off to this time?" Nathaniel asked.

He was still upset that Aurelia was moving out of Bloom Villa without telling him. How many times had she run away?

He had even postponed an evening meeting to have dinner with her. She had already found another man and didn't care about that dinner. She felt more comfortable when he wasn't home.

Aurelia didn't catch the tone of his words. She replied, "I'm going back to the hospital to be with Reed."

Her response surprised Nathaniel. Moments ago, seeing her with the suitcase had ignited a nameless anger in him. Now, she was out of his reach, and he would have to gauge her mood to contact her.

'You're really something!'

Hearing she was going to the hospital, his mood softened.

"Reed has caregivers and Ted; you don't need to stay with him all the time."

He didn't know Aurelia was taking every chance to care for Reed.

According to her plan, she would leave the city the day she got the divorce papers. With just over twenty days left, this month would be the longest of her life.

Every day, she would wake up and cross off a number on the calendar; even her dreams were about escaping.

Aurelia smiled faintly. "I'm willing to."

Nathaniel didn't know what she was smiling about. Zack came over from a distance, observant. He took the suitcase from Aurelia's hands and said, "Mrs. Heilbronn, we can't park here. We need to cross the street."

Aurelia wanted to take a taxi. She couldn't stand another minute with Nathaniel. When someone you know so well becomes a stranger, it's suffocating.

"Zack, don't worry about it. You give Mr. Heilbronn a ride; I'll grab a cab," she said.

She didn't even look at Nathaniel, her expression dull and gaze distant. Calling him "Mr. Heilbronn" emphasized their estrangement.

Zack didn't dare get involved in their issues. He glanced at Nathaniel, whose face was stern and unreadable. Despite following him for years, Zack couldn't figure out his thoughts.

Should he escort Aurelia to the hospital or not?

One said no need, the other stayed silent.

A phone call broke the silence. Aurelia pulled out her phone and answered calmly, "Okay. I'll be there shortly. Please wait for me by the roadside."

Her taxi had arrived.

Zack glanced at Nathaniel again, who was still expressionless. Zack was anxious for his boss, thinking, 'Nathaniel, stop being so stubborn. Lower your pride and talk to her. Your wife is about to leave!'

When a woman stops arguing, clinging, or asking for help, the relationship is basically over.

The three of them walked out of the courtyard in silence, turned onto the street, and saw a Volkswagen with its hazard lights on not far away.

Aurelia quickened her pace and walked over to Zack to take the suitcase. "Zack, I'll take it. Thanks."

Zack cleared his throat, wanting to say something but found himself at a loss. He was anxious but didn't know what to do. Based on his experience, Aurelia had made up her mind this time and wouldn't forgive Nathaniel.

Seeing Zack hesitate, Aurelia spoke again, "Zack, give it to me. Don't waste Mr. Heilbronn's time."

Nathaniel, who had been silent all along, finally spoke, "Give her!"

Those two words made Zack shiver, and he let go.

Nathaniel then strode across the street to his flashy limited edition Bentley.

Zack jogged to catch up, occasionally looking back. Aurelia was already by the cab, struggling to put the suitcase in the trunk.

Zack sighed. "Mr. Heilbronn, should I take a picture of the license plate?"

"No!" Another responded coldly.

Zack got into the driver's seat, silently memorizing the license plate number. There had been a lot of negative news about cabs recently, so it was better to be cautious.

He knew his boss was angry, and as an assistant, he couldn't be careless.

Nathaniel leaned back in the car and closed his eyes for a few minutes. The air in the car was so cold it didn't even need air conditioning.

Nathaniel looked at the colorful city nightscape outside the window, and memories floated into his mind.

Just a few months ago, Aurelia had furrowed her brows and complained about him coming home too late every day and not taking her to the mountains to see the night view.

Imperick's night view was famous nationwide. Many tourists would climb the mountain to see the grand night view.

When the neon lights lit up, they would look for their light.

Now, the light in Aurelia's heart had gone out.

Nathaniel came back to his senses and found Zack following the Volkswagen at a steady pace until it stopped at the hospital entrance. Only then did he turn the car around and head back to the company.

Nathaniel didn't reprimand Zack for taking matters into his own hands. He silently approved of Zack's actions.

Can't win me back
