Chapter 490 I Am Ready at Any Time
Nathaniel and Aurelia walked towards the parking lot, carrying the child, with Rosalind's heart-wrenching cries echoing behind them.
Back in the car, the child woke up, looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings and people, and whimpered a bit.
Aurelia, experienced in soothing children, held and comforted the child for a few minutes until the crying stopped. The child mumbled words that were hard to understand, but it sounded like "Mommy... Mommy..."
The adorable little one played with Aurelia's hair, and Nathaniel, after fastening his seatbelt, turned to see the heartwarming scene of mother and child.
"Was Jacob like this when he was little?" Nathaniel asked.
Aurelia smiled slightly, "Jacob was even cuter when he was little."
Maybe it was because Jacob was her own son, but she would never admit it. She stubbornly believed that Jacob and Dorothy were the cutest babies in the world.
Nathaniel sighed inwardly, regretting that he had missed the first four years of his two precious children's lives. It was a lifelong regret for him.
Nathaniel started the car and slowly merged onto the main road. "Let's take this little guy back now. His parents should be home from work by this time and must be going crazy looking for him."
Aurelia teased, "Weren't you planning to sell him to a friend abroad for a good price?"
"I said that just to scare her. These three days will make her taste the pain of being separated from her child. She'll be so scared that we'll harm the child that she'll obediently kneel at Mom's grave and repent."
Aurelia knew he was just saying that. She had known him long enough to understand that while he could be ruthless, he had his principles and would never do something so morally corrupt.
"How are we going to explain this to his parents when we return him?" Aurelia asked.
Nathaniel thought for a moment. "We'll figure it out when we get there."
The traffic was a bit heavy, and by the time they returned the child, his parents were frantically pacing at home, about to go out and search for him. They saw Nathaniel and Aurelia coming up the stairs with their child.
The child's mother was terrified and cried as she took her son. The father, still somewhat composed, asked, "How did my son end up with you? Where's my mom?"
Nathaniel lied without missing a beat, "A pregnant woman had an emergency on the road, and Dr. Claire went with the ambulance. She asked us to bring the child back."
The couple was immensely grateful. "Thank you so much. As long as he's safe, that's all that matters."
"You're welcome. We've returned your child, so our job here is done. Goodbye."
Nathaniel took Aurelia's hand and pressed the elevator button, while the couple kept thanking them.
Once downstairs, Aurelia finally let out a breath she had been holding. "You lie so easily. Do you often lie to me like that?"
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. "You're my everything now. How could I dare lie to you?"
He opened the car door. "Rosalind will turn herself in three days from now. They'll know the truth then. I don't want to get entangled with them unnecessarily right now. Get in the car and think about what you want to eat later."
Aurelia got into the car, and Nathaniel, noticing she hadn't fastened her seatbelt, leaned over to buckle it for her before returning to the driver's seat and driving away from Rosalind's neighborhood.
Aurelia looked out the window and took a deep breath. "Do you think Rosalind will really kneel at my mom's grave and repent? What if she tries to escape?"
Nathaniel snorted lightly. "I've got Zack keeping an eye on her. She's too scared we'll sell her grandson to run away. She'll stay at Mom's grave for these three days, as she should. After that, she'll turn herself in, and her son will learn about her crimes."
Aurelia sighed. "What about Burry? What about her illness?"
"She's searching the world for a match. You can imagine how hard that is to find," Nathaniel said, glancing at her. "We'll talk to Marcus about bringing her back home. The police in Elvenia are closing in, but I'm afraid Burry might not have that much time. The sooner we treat her, the better. Since you two are siblings, the chances of a successful match are high. Aurelia, would you be willing to be her match?"
Nathaniel was worried. He knew Aurelia's thoughts but wanted to hear it from her.
"I would. She's my sister. The procedure might hurt, but it won't affect me much. A bit of bone marrow can save her life. If my mom were alive, she'd want me to do it. Plus, a family transplant has a lower rejection rate, right?"
Nathaniel nodded. "Then we'll find a way to save her."
Aurelia looked concerned. "Is it going to be difficult?"
Nathaniel drove with one hand, his eyebrows raised. "It'll be challenging. The detective I hired reported that she tried to escape two days ago but was caught and brought back. It seems she's not staying with that drug lord willingly and has no freedom. Even though he treasures her and treats her well, it ultimately depends on her willingness."
He then tried to comfort her. "Let's think about what to eat first. I'm starving..."
His last words were said with a hint of a whine, almost like he was pouting. Aurelia snapped out of her thoughts. "What do you want to eat?"
Nathaniel chuckled at her teasing. "It was my first time visiting Mom's grave in Coral Bay. How did I do? Do you think she liked me?"
"Mr. Heilbronn, you were a bit too eager. My mom might not be used to it."
"Well, she'll have to get used to it. I plan to be with you for a lifetime."
"A lifetime on probation."
"A lifetime on probation still makes me your only husband. I don't mind."
At a red light, Nathaniel turned to look at her. "Aurelia, how about we get married?"
Aurelia was stunned. She didn't know how the conversation had turned to such a sensitive topic, and she couldn't promise anything and remained silent.
Nathaniel didn't want to pressure her and quickly added, "Don't worry, I was just joking. But whenever you're ready, I'm here."
Aurelia knew he wasn't joking. He said it to ease her mind.
"Let's have Mexican food. It's been a while."
She changed the subject.
Back in Imperick, she often went to Ulysses' house with Amber to eat Mexican food. Since moving to Coral Bay, she hadn't had it alone. Eating with more people always made the food taste better and the atmosphere more enjoyable.
Nathaniel steered the car towards a bustling street.
