Chapter 110 Nathaniel Can't Sleep

The Heilbronn Group was shrouded in a gloomy atmosphere this afternoon.

Nathaniel, exhausted after work, glanced at a sandwich shop in the city center his car passed by. It was a small shop, and he found the taste just average. What he couldn't understand was why his picky wife loved the food from this place.

"Stop the car."

Zack heard it and immediately tried to find a place to park, afraid of being scolded if he was even a second late. At times like this, he didn't dare to provoke Nathaniel.

The car slowly pulled over.

Nathaniel looked out the window and said to Zack, "Go pack some sandwiches."

Zack thought to himself, 'Why does Mr. Heilbronn want to eat sandwiches from a roadside shop all of a sudden? I remembered that he didn't like sandwiches.'

As he was about to get out of the car, he heard Nathanielin the back seat speak again, "Forget it. I'll go myself."

Nathaniel got out of the car, buttoned up, and headed towards the sandwich shop, looking handsome and dignified.

Both his car and he were out of place on this old street.

The sandwich shop wasn't large, but it was clean. Since it was past dinner time, few people were ordering.

Nathaniel checked the menu, ordered a few, and instructed the server it was a take-away.

A moment later, he came out of the shop carrying his order and returned to the car.

It was then that Zack realized that the order was for Aurelia!

Zack exclaimed, “Oh no!”

He didn't dare to tell Nathaniel that Aurelia was no longer at Imperick since Nathaniel would surely be furious if he found out.

After hesitating for a while, he decided to keep this secret. If Nathaniel got explosively angry, he would deal with it when he got back home.

Zack stepped on the gas, contemplating all the way back.

Driving the car back to the Bloom Villa, he wished he could escape immediately.

Nathaniel got out of the car with the packing, and when he saw Aurelia's car parked in the yard, a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

He first placed the sandwiches in the small kitchen, thinking to himself that if that woman continued to throw a tantrum, it would be her fault. He wouldn't indulge her anymore! He had pampered her to the point where she dared to confront him.

He quickly freshened up in the room and changed into casual home attire.

He didn't see Aurelia in the main bedroom. Passing by the study on the second floor, he peeked in but didn't see her there either.

Downstairs, Betty was mopping the floor, and the TV was off today.

"Betty, where's Aurelia?" Nathaniel asked.

Betty stopped her work and stood with the mop in her hands, "Mrs. Heilbronn said she's going on vacation with Mr. Reed Heilbronn today. She left with her suitcase at noon."

Nathaniel stood still, feeling a sinking feeling in his heart.

That woman really had some guts, daring to slip away from under his nose without a word. He had even thought about her preference for sandwiches, worried they might get cold, so he had the server wrap them in several layers of bags. His thoughtfulness had been completely wasted.

Nathaniel asked, "Is there anything to eat, Betty?"

Betty stepped into the kitchen since she had finished mopping. "Mrs. Heilbronn said you might be working late these days and couldn't make it for dinner. It's so late, haven't you eaten yet? How about some pasta?"

Nathaniel, now seething with anger, felt his blood boiling. In the past, when he came home late, Aurelia would personally make him delicate night snacks. It had never been this cold and lonely when he returned home.

It didn't feel like home at all.

"No, I am fine," Nathaniel replied to Betty, feeling no appetite.

Nathaniel sat in the small kitchen, opened the box of sandwiches he had bought, and tried to have some with the sauce provided by the shop, but no matter how he tried, he couldn't taste any deliciousness in them. The more he ate, the more irritated he became, and he dumped the remaining half.

He took out his phone and called Reed after hesitating for a long while.

At Silvershore Falls, Aurelia and Reed were sitting in the yard, playing chess and enjoying the sea breeze.

When Reed's phone rang, he glanced at the caller ID on the screen and showed no intention of answering. That rascal grandson needed to be left hanging for a bit.

Reed placed a chess piece, appearing calm as if he didn't hear the ringing.

Aurelia reminded him, "Grandpa, would you like to answer it?"

Reed paused before pressing the reject button.

Their attention returned to the chess game.

A few seconds later, it rang again.

Reed sneered, "So annoying. He keeps calling even when I don't answer. No emotional intelligence at all. It takes more than that to manage a company."

Hearing the tone in his voice, Aurelia guessed that the caller was Nathaniel.

She casually picked up a nut from the table, "Grandpa, maybe you should answer the call. What if it's something important."

Reed, seeming a bit annoyed, said, "He's fine! Even if there's something, it's because I took his wife away."

Aurelia choked a bit and didn't say anything more.

In the end, Reed answered impatiently, "What? You're ruining my good mood."

Nathaniel felt a bit defeated on the other end. Reed rejected his call, and when he finally got through, it seemed like his grandfather didn't want to talk to him.

"Grandpa, where are you on vacation?"

"Silvershore Falls."

Nathaniel raised his eyebrows. "When are you both coming back?"

Reed scoffed, "Both of us? Don't tell me you're calling because you miss me. You haven't called me once or showed up in the villa in over half a month, and as soon as your wife is gone, you call immediately. If you want to know when Aurelia is coming back, ask her, not me. I'm not going back today!"

Nathaniel was retorted at, and he dared not say a word in response to provoke his grandfather. Feeling embarrassed that his feelings had been exposed, he was glad that the woman wasn't present.

"When will Aurelia be back then?"

"Ask her then. I don't know what your wife is thinking or how long she wants to stay. She might be so comfortable here that she won't go back."

After venting, Reed immediately ended the call, muttering discontentedly, "He's too embarrassed to ask his wife, beating around the bush to ask me. I don't know why he's hesitating. Aurelia, ignore him and let him stay at home alone."

Aurelia choked on her water. How come she hadn't noticed how cute Reed was before? What he scolded Nathaniel with just now made her feel relieved.

"Right, let him wait. Grandpa, let's continue playing chess."

Laughter and joy returned to the yard.

On the other side, the atmosphere was a bit off.

Nathaniel regretted making this unnecessary call, not getting any useful information, and receiving a scolding instead.

Reed had become increasingly stubborn in recent years, and somehow, Aurelia seemed to have him on her side.  He didn't care for his grandson, but Aurelia instead wholeheartedly.

He felt so disappointed.

Back in the bedroom, looking at the empty side of the bed, he couldn't help but pull out a cigarette. As the lighter sparked, he realized he hadn't smoked in the bedroom for some time.

Aurelia hadn't minded before, but recently, she seemed to have developed a strong aversion to his smoking. Every time he smoked, she would keep her distance and only let him come close after the smoke had dissipated.

Thinking of this, he irritatedly threw the cigarette into the trash and buried himself in the covers.

The scent of Aurelia's shampoo lingered on the pillow, and after two days without sleep, exhaustion from handling documents at work made his eyes heavy. Yet, at this moment, he lay there, becoming more awake, his mind filled with memories of Aurelia at home.

"Damn it!"

Can't win me back
