Chapter 401 Crying

Joe walked in from outside, carrying the breakfast delivered by the assistant.

Aurelia heard the door open and whispered, "I can't talk now, my brother is back."

With that, she ended the call in a second.

Nathaniel had a lot to say but lost the chance. He fell back into bed, inhaling the scent that filled the room, and after a moment of self-consolation, got up to wash up.

At the office, Nathaniel immediately made some calls to arrange everything. He sent Zack to take hair samples from Aurelia and Norman to the hospital for a paternity test and kept another sample of Norman's locked in a drawer, waiting to compare it with something from Elvenia.

He now suspected there was more to Aurelia's background and didn't believe a word Norman said.

He speculated that there was a high possibility Burry, who was far away abroad, was related to Aurelia by blood, and he had to get to the bottom of it.

Zack carefully put away the two hair samples. "Mr. Heilbronn, there's an important meeting this morning. Should I deliver these now?"

Nathaniel checked his watch. There was less than half an hour before the morning meeting, and even if Zack drove fast, he wouldn't make it in time. But this matter was his top priority, and he didn't trust anyone else with it.

"You don't need to attend the morning meeting. Leave the prepared materials with me and take these to the hospital immediately. Don't delay."

Zack took the order and hurried downstairs.

Nathaniel organized the meeting content, and the office was quiet for only a few minutes before he heard a commotion outside.

Through the glass door, he heard Beatrice storm in with a queenly tone, and the secretaries were trying to placate her politely.

"Mr. Heilbronn instructed that no one should disturb him at this time. How about you sit down and have a cup of tea while I inform him?"

Beatrice asked, "How long have you been working at the Heilbronn Group? How much does Mr. Heilbronn pay you each month? Is it too much for you to spend?"

The secretaries were in a dilemma. Beatrice's visit coincided with Zack's departure, and they really couldn't handle this.

Before Zack left, he instructed that Nathaniel had an important meeting and no unannounced visitors were allowed. But Zack didn't tell them how to handle Nathaniel's mother. Considering Nathaniel's strict work standards, mistakes could lead to pay cuts or even dismissal.

They couldn't afford to offend either side.

"How about I show you around? This children's area was recently set up by Mr. Heilbronn. His kids love playing here. I bet you have lots of toys at home too?"

The secretary's flattering words only made Beatrice more upset. She looked around the area outside Nathaniel's office, which used to be more business-like with sofas and a coffee table for guests.

Now it looked like a playground, not a company.

The secretary's words deeply hurt her. Her own grandson was not allowed to see her, and her son didn't bring the kids to acknowledge her as their grandmother. The son she raised was completely under Aurelia's influence and no longer respected her.

Beatrice said, "Do I need your permission to enter my son's company?"

The secretaries didn't dare to speak.

At that moment, the office door opened, and Nathaniel stepped out, stopping at the door.

The scene before him was suffocating, and he loosened his tie. "Bring some tea."

The secretaries, relieved, quickly left.

Beatrice looked haggard, her eyes bloodshot, clearly having not slept well for two nights. She seemed thinner, and if not for her expensive jewelry, it would be hard to associate her with a wealthy lady.

In just two days of Ashley being detained, she had driven herself to this state.

Nathaniel felt a pang of sympathy, but he was determined to teach his mother a lesson this time, forcing her to change her indulgent ways with Ashley.

He said nothing, waiting for her to lose it.

Beatrice stormed into the office and soon lost control.

"Nathaniel, I'm begging you. I have no other way. Your sister will die in there. It's not a place for people. She did wrong, but we have money. Can't we just pay them off? If $100,000 isn't enough, then $200,000, $500,000, $1,000,000, whatever it takes."

Nathaniel sat back in his chair, staring at the computer screen but not really seeing anything.

"Mom, do you think this is about money? If something had happened to the baby that day, how much do you think it would cost?"

Beatrice took off her bracelet and placed it on his desk. "I'll pay. If you won't, I will. This bracelet should be enough, right? Now that her baby is born, I lose a daughter. Can her life compare to my daughter's?"

Beatrice was so angry she was pale.

Nathaniel took off his glasses and rubbed his temples before speaking.

"Mom, is a life worth just a bracelet to you?"

Nathaniel's worldview was shattered by his mother's words. To her, lives had different values and could be compensated with objects.

He had witnessed the husband of the beaten pregnant woman at the hospital, desperate and almost begging the doctors.

He considered himself indifferent to strangers and no saint, but he empathized then.

Having experienced similar or worse, he understood the man's feelings, thinking of his own past.

Thankfully, Aurelia and their kids were safe. Otherwise, the pain of losing them would haunt him for life.

Seeing Nathaniel unmoved, Beatrice cried, "Will you help or not? If something happens to Ashley, I won't live either. Your useless father told me to find you. If you don't help, I'll die."

Nathaniel felt suffocated in his office. "She won't be harmed."

He wouldn't let his sister die in there. The police reported Ashley's condition daily, and she was with non-aggressive people.

Dying in there was an exaggeration; it was just a lesson for her temper.

Nathaniel felt a headache, not expecting his mother to be the first woman to cry in front of him.

He reluctantly called Matthew. "Dad, come to my office and pick her up. Now."
