Chapter 236 Never to Meet Again
Aurelia tried to break free from his grip, but he tightened his grasp, causing pain in her wrist.
In the struggle, there was a ripping sound, and the sleeve of her shirt was torn.
Nathaniel's gaze was fixed on the tattoo on her shoulder, and he froze.
The bright red spider lilies bloomed vividly, and upon closer inspection, a terrifying scar was hidden beneath the petals.
Seeing that, Nathaniel gave a bitter smile. She had changed her name and cut off contact with everyone for the past four years, truly intending to never see him again.
Seeing that hideous scar broke his heart. He knew every inch of her body, and that scar was new, likely from that car accident. He remembered she was always afraid of pain.
"Aurelia," he called her name with reddened eyes as tears welled up, his voice filled with endless regret.
Aurelia calmed down and said, "Can you let go? It hurts."
Only then did Nathaniel realize his grasp on her arm was too forceful, subconsciously wanting to hold onto her, afraid she would disappear from his life again, but he forgot to control his strength and ended up hurting her instead.
He let go, but his gaze never left her.
Aurelia's wrist bore several finger marks from his grip. She rubbed her hand and said coldly, "Aurelia is dead. My name is Anne. I will repay you every penny."
Freed from his grasp, she opened the car door and got into the driver's seat.
Nathaniel reacted quickly, getting in the car right after her and sitting in the back seat.
He knelt on one knee inside the car, reaching forward to touch the scar on her arm, pleading, "Aurelia, can you talk to me? I have so much to say. I built a cenotaph for you next to mom's grave. I've missed you every moment these past years. How have you been?"
Aurelia took a deep breath to compose herself. In the past, he never cared about anything related to her, let alone her mother's grave. He didn't even know her mother's name. Now, after the divorce, he respectfully called Brenda, "Mom."
Aurelia found it ironic and spoke coldly, "Mr. Heilbronn, please get out of the car. I need to go home, and it's inappropriate for you to stay here."
Nathaniel didn't get out but instead fastened his seatbelt, intending to stay with her.
He continued to plead, "Aurelia, I've had a terrible four years without you. Every time I turned over in bed and felt the empty side, I thought of that car accident. You must have been in so much pain. Please, hit me if you want. Do whatever you want, just don't ignore me."
Aurelia listened to his pleas, knowing he was fully humbling himself. Mentioning that car accident again still terrified her; she would never forget that experience.
She warned him again with indifference, "Mr. Heilbronn, please get out of the car!"
Nathaniel insisted, "Aurelia, can you give me another chance? We still have a long life ahead of us. Your family and friends miss you and are waiting for you to come back. Don't you miss them?"
Aurelia felt a pang of guilt in her heart when he mentioned family, thinking of Reed.
When she had the car accident, Reed was calling her, concerned about whether she had eaten and slept well. She couldn't imagine how devastated and shocked he must have been to hear of her death.
Given his health back then, could he have handled it?
Reed had given her the most warmth during the bleakest time of her life, and she could never forget that kindness.
Aurelia steadied her emotions and asked, "How is your grandpa now?"
Nathaniel was overjoyed that she was willing to talk to him.
He said, "Grandpa is recuperating at the Heilbronn Villa. After you left, he disowned me as his grandson and told me to bring you back, or I would be banned from entering the Heilbronn Villa."
He stated the facts, hoping to gain her sympathy even a little would make him happy.
Aurelia lowered her head in thought and remained silent. Hearing that Reed was okay, she felt relieved.
At that moment, Aurelia's phone rang, breaking the brief silence. She glanced at it; it was Dorothy calling.
In this situation, she didn't dare to answer. He still didn't know that their children had been safely born into this world. She didn't want him to know.
He had Chelsea to bear children for him. Aurelia wouldn't allow her precious babies to be taken away from her and compete with the mistress's child for fatherly love.
Aurelia heartlessly hung up the phone and turned it off.
"One more time, Mr. Heilbronn, can you get out of the car?" she said again, losing her patience.
Nathaniel sat still, unwilling to leave after finally meeting her again.
Aurelia sat in the driver's seat, unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, and disappeared into the crowd near subway.
Nathaniel got out and chased after her, but she had already squeezed into the most crowded area.
Through the crowd, he saw her with her chin-length short hair, looking more composed and mature than she was four years ago, her eyes still captivated him.
For the first time in his life, Nathaniel entered the subway, never having experienced the rush hour crowd. He was quickly pushed out of the line.
A subway train arrived, and he watched helplessly as she was pushed her way into the crowd, not even looking back at him.
The subway train left, and another line formed outside the safety doors. He stared in the direction the subway train had gone, unable to move.
The sense of failure made him feel that, as the heir to the Heilbronn Group, worth billions, he was not as good as these ordinary people who commuted diligently every day.
At least they had goals, knew which subway to take, and how to queue up and squeeze in when it arrived.
While he only knew how to make the one he loved sad and heartbroken, thinking of cherishing them only after it was too late.
At thirty, he lost his lover and children. He found his life was meaningless.
Aurelia stood in the crowded carriage, feeling like a lost soul.Someone noticed her torn clothes and kindly offered her a seat.
She thanked the stranger. This wasn't the subway train that would take her home; she got on it just because it happened to arrive and gave her a chance to escape him.
At the next stop, Aurelia got off and hailed a taxi home.
At the Semona Family Villa, Dorothy was unhappy not being able to contact her mom. When she finally saw her return, she ran over, asking, "Mommy, why didn't you answer my call? Uncle picked the best school for me and Jacob. We were waiting for you to come back and visit it with us."
Aurelia tried to control her emotions in front of the children.
She composed herself and said, "Darling, Mommy's phone ran out of battery. I'm very tired today. How about I take you there tomorrow?"
In just a few words, Dorothy sensed something was off, asking with concern, "Mommy, what's wrong? Did you meet some strange client?"
Aurelia forced a smile and said, "Mommy's fine. I'll be okay after a nap."
Dorothy said, "Mommy, wait here for a moment."
With that, she turned and ran to the fridge, tiptoeing to take out a small strawberry cake.
Holding it in her little hands, she presented it to Aurelia like a treasure.
Dorothy encouraged her, "Mommy, I cast a happiness spell on it. You'll feel better after eating it."
Aurelia took the small cake from Dorothy and kissed her on the forehead, saying, "Thank you, Dorothy."
Joe came downstairs, having already noticed Aurelia's unusual mood from the staircase.
