Chapter 123 Someone Mysterious is Investigating Her Mother
Aurelia heard the answer she wanted and felt relieved.
The car drove straight back to the Heilbronn Group building's underground parking lot. Since the last time the two of them appeared publicly together, there had been much speculation among the company employees about their relationship, most of which were well wishes.
Nathaniel neither confirmed nor denied the rumors, leaving them to be tacitly accepted.
There was no need to hide now. After getting out of the car, Nathaniel took the suitcase and went upstairs with Aurelia. He asked Zack to go back to Bloom Villa to put away their things since the seafood in the car should be frozen.
They took the elevator directly to the top floor. When the doors opened, the HR manager, Luna, was waiting outside with the newly drafted contract in hand.
"Mr. Heilbronn, should we sign this contract for Mrs. Heilbronn?" Luna asked.
Nathaniel stared at Luna for a few seconds upon hearing the term "Mrs. Heilbronn" before Luna quickly corrected herself, "I mean, Aurelia."
"Yes. It is part of the company culture to address colleagues by their names directly, and you, as the HR manager, should remember that rule," Nathaniel replied.
Luna was taken aback and wondered if she had made a mistake. Yesterday, Nathaniel had urgently wanted Aurelia to come back, and he seemed displeased today.
Nathaniel pulled Aurelia's suitcase into the office and then glanced at her. "Your outfit is too casual. Go inside and change into professional attire. The Heilbronn Group has dress code regulations for employees, and no one is an exception."
Aurelia agreed and only realized that he meant for her to change inside when she saw him place the suitcase in the office's lounge.
At this point, the couple didn't think much of it, but Luna felt awkward, thinking she might be superfluous in this situation.
"Mr. Heilbronn, I'll leave the contract here. When you're done, and I'll get it stamped." Luna was eager to leave.
Aurelia stopped her. "Ms. Rodriguez, don't bother. I won't stay long."
Nathaniel sat down at his desk, ready to focus on work. His recent workload had piled up like a mountain, and the stack of documents on his desk would keep him busy for a while.
Unhappy with Aurelia's response, he said, "You complained about your position in the car, and now you find a promotion too troublesome. What will satisfy you?"
Aurelia didn't want to argue with him in front of others, thinking it was childish and pointless. "I'll be satisfied when you sign that resignation report."
Nathaniel tapped his fingers on the desk. "Why don't you go back and tell Grandpa that the CEO wants you to take over?"
"I mean, there's no need to sign the contract again. After the press conference, I won't be coming back. It's just a few days; is that hard to understand?" Aurelia's temper flared, irritated by his words. It seemed as if he was implying she coveted his position, in fact, she just wanted to stay away from the Heilbronn Group.
She was initially forced to join the Heilbronn Group after signing a non-compete agreement with Swan. Providing design drafts to the Heilbronn Group during her employment was already a violation.
"Do as you please," Nathaniel said, not wanting to argue anymore. He felt that all the good times had been spent dealing with this woman, and his work hadn't progressed at all.
Seeing the couple argue for a while, Luna realized that the contract could wait. She quietly left the room, closing the door behind her.
Instead of changing, she grabbed her phone charger from her suitcase and went back to the design department. She didn't want to stay with Nathaniel any longer, unsure of how long their argument would last.
Back at her workstation in the design department, Tiffany looked at her with joy. "Aurelia, I thought you wouldn't come back. Some people said you had resigned."
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, Aurelia sighed as she sat down. "I did resign, but Mr. Heilbronn hasn't approved it."
Tiffany was surprised. "Do you really need to follow proper procedures?"
She thought Aurelia could do as she pleased in the company.
Aurelia gave her a look. "What are you thinking? Just focus on your work!"
Tiffany looked curious, especially about Aurelia's relationship with the CEO. "Aurelia, have you seen the discussions on the company's internal network about you and Mr. Heilbronn? Some say you're getting married. Is it true?"
Aurelia shook her head. "Don't listen to those rumors."
In truth, she and Nathaniel were far from getting married; they were on the verge of divorce.
Tiffany looked disappointed.
Reed had taken Ted to Silvershore Falls for a vacation, so Aurelia had some freedom at lunchtime. She didn't have to go to the CEO's office for lunch, making it her first time arranging her lunch since joining the Heilbronn Group.
She followed Tiffany to the employee cafeteria.
The cafeteria was different from a restaurant; at this time, everyone went downstairs together to eat, so it was quite crowded. The popular food counter had a long line, and finding a seat was a challenge. Aurelia felt like she was back in college.
Tiffany found a seat by the window and placed her bag there to save the spot. Then, she pulled Aurelia to get food.
The food in the Heilbronn Group's employee cafeteria was quite good, with a wide variety of dishes that even picky eaters could find something they liked.
Aurelia chose mostly vegetables. She had probably eaten too much seafood recently and wanted something light. What she really craved were the simple vegetable dishes Betty cooked at home.
The cafeteria conversations were mostly focused on the boss's rumors today.
It was Aurelia's first time in the cafeteria, and she felt many staring at her, making her feel uncomfortable. She had become the center of attention.
She quickly finished her lunch with a few bites and wanted to leave the place as soon as possible.
At that moment, Timothy called her, "Aurelia, I have a discovery."
Aurelia hurriedly found a quiet place to take the call. "Timothy, go on."
"I've been monitoring the abandoned car recycling plant, and someone is investigating the wreck from your mother's accident years ago. They're trying to buy the car's dashcam footage."
Aurelia grew anxious. "Have they found the dashcam footage?"
"Not yet. That person is still looking into it. Besides us, there seems to be another butch interested in investigating your mother's accident from back then."
Aurelia was puzzled. "Who are they? Do you know who's investigating my mother's accident?"
After a moment of thought, she couldn't figure out who would be interested in this matter. Her mother had few close friends, as she had cut ties with her grandmother's family due to her decision to marry the poor Norman.
Who could be investigating this matter?
Aurelia felt uneasy, unable to guess the other party's intentions. Were they friends or foes, or perhaps trying to confuse her and disrupt her search for the truth?
Timothy tried to reassure her, "Don't worry for now. I'll find out who they are. They might also be looking to help your mother find the culprit; otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to dig up this cold case."
Aurelia's mind was unsettled.
