Chapter 61 He Wanted to Hold Her While Sleeping
Nathaniel's eyes darkened gradually. This matter was indeed too coincidental, and anyone who heard about it would be suspicious.
The person being suspected happened to be the one closest to him. They had spent three years sleeping in the same bed, and he knew better than anyone else what she was capable of.
Nathaniel thought about the pile of things she drew in the study, wasting a bunch of his paper, often mixing up his files, causing him to embarrass himself in front of the staff during a meeting once.
Without much thought, Nathaniel directly replied to Zack, "It couldn't be her. Absolutely not her."
"Mr. Nathaniel, actually, Mrs. Heilbronn's work is not bad. She previously..."
The conversation was interrupted at this point.
Oscar, drunk, was being supported by his assistant as he staggered over.
Zack hurried over to lend a hand.
There was a resting suite on the top floor, and Nathaniel followed to help Oscar up.
Downstairs, Ashley and Chelsea were whispering in a corner.
"Have you seen Aurelia? She disappeared after going to the restroom."
Ashley reassured. "Don't worry. Her fate with Nathaniel ends here. He wouldn't want a woman who seduces his brother. Just wait and see."
Chelsea, feeling puzzled, was currently being ignored by Nathaniel. With nothing else to do, she temporarily believed Ashley. After all, the matter was initiated by Ashley, so even if something went wrong, it wouldn't be her problem. Nathaniel couldn't blame her for this.
"How do we catch them in the act?"
Ashley smiled. "I've already contacted some alumni from the journalism department to bring recording equipment tomorrow morning. Let's just wait for the news."
Impressed by Ashley's thorough planning, Chelsea felt a bit more at ease.
They celebrated together and then began to chat casually.
"Chelsea, do you think that man in the silver-gray suit is handsome?"
Chelsea followed her gaze and shook her head. "He's far worse than Nathaniel."
Ashley burped. "Your taste is off. I see him as a prince charming, shining and all."
Chelsea disagreed.
Ashley suddenly raised her glass. "It's decided. I'm going to pursue him starting tomorrow."
After settling Oscar, Nathaniel was filled with anger at the thought of what Aurelia had done recently. He had already warned her not to get too close to Uncle Marcus last time, but it seemed like she either didn't take his words seriously or just casually listened and then forgot.
As the guests downstairs were leaving, he loosened his tie and instructed Zack, "Return to the Bloom Villa."
Zack was in a good mood. Nathaniel hadn't asked him to drive to the Jade Community for a while. He couldn't quite understand his own feelings, but he just wished Nathaniel would accompany him.
Chelsea was hypocritical, showing respect to others in front of Nathaniel. Privately, she was arrogant and had a bad attitude towards her colleagues at the company. If possible, she would stick the words 'Mrs. Heilbronn' on her face to claim her possession of Nathaniel.
With keys in hand, he unconsciously walked towards the parking lot, humming a tune.
Nathaniel observed him all the way. Zack was usually a very stable person, but today, he seemed a bit off.
"Looks like you are in a good mood, huh?"
Zack coughed. "Yes. My wife cooked steak at home waiting for me."
He casually made up a story.
"Eating steak so late at night, it's hard to digest."
Nathaniel remained indifferent.
"Mr. Nathaniel, you don't understand us common folks. For an ordinary person, having a wife and children by his side is better than champagne, red wine, and luxury cars. It brings more happiness."
Nathaniel didn't quite agree with him, "Your annual salary is more than double that of Adrian Sterling. You're no longer an ordinary person."
Zack was taken aback. His salary was at the top in the industry, and boasting about an ordinary person's income could come off as overly showy to others, much like a top student boasting about getting an A+ on a test to someone who did poorly, which could be quite annoying.
Nathaniel was picky, and his assistants changed almost weekly like a revolving door. Until Zack took over, the position finally had some stability.
Having finally found a satisfactory assistant, Nathaniel valued Zack’s talent and was generous. He immediately offered a high salary to retain him.
Zack's annual salary could easily afford a three-bedroom house, leaving eighty percent of people behind.
The car moved steadily on the main road as Nathaniel leaned back in his seat. His mind was filled with Aurelia's captivating blue eyes.
At eleven o'clock in the middle of the night, Aurelia didn't even know to call and ask if he was coming back. He suddenly realized that Aurelia hadn't called him in a long time.
Previously, she would call at least three times a day, asking if he needed food delivered at noon, inquiring if he was coming back for dinner, what he wanted to eat, and even bothering him with calls if he had a business dinner.
Upon careful recollection, it was after they signed the divorce agreement that Aurelia began to distance herself from him.
The ringing phone broke the silence in the car.
Nathaniel saw Chelsea's call, and a hint of disappointment flashed in his eyes. He directly rejected the call. A few seconds later, the phone rang again; this time, it was Ashley.
He rubbed his temples and answered.
Ashley said, "Nathaniel, Chelsea, and I can't find a cab. Can you give us a ride?"
"If you can't find a cab, have Ted send someone to pick you up. I'm not your chauffeur," Nathaniel replied.
On the other end of the line, Ashley put it on speaker. Upon hearing his words, both of them hesitated.
Ashley felt a bit wronged. "It's late at night. You should be concerned about the safety of your little sister and future wife."
Nathaniel's tone became irritated. "If you have nothing else to say, I'm hanging up."
He ended the call directly.
Chelsea's expression turned sour. She realized that Nathaniel truly didn't care about her safety. Previously, she could call him to come over at any time. Now, even getting him to answer the phone had become a challenge.
She thought, ‘Is Aurelia really that important? Is he willing to sever ties built over a decade over a small matter? He's so heartless.’
Chelsea knew she couldn't wait like this. She had to do something to salvage the situation.
Upon returning to the Bloom Villa, Nathaniel found Aurelia already asleep in the guest room.
Her presence was absent in the living room, making the entire villa feel empty. No matter how late he returned in the past, she would be waiting on the sofa, even preparing a late-night snack. Although he didn't eat, she insisted on making it, coaxing him to take a few bites.
Even if he just tasted it, she would sing contentedly.
Nathaniel took off his suit jacket and draped it over the sofa, looking at the spot where she often sat, feeling a sense of loss.
He went back to change clothes and take a shower, leaving the spacious main bedroom.
Initially, when he first married her, Nathaniel took her as an intruder. Now, without her, it felt like half of the world was missing.
Nathaniel realized that Aurelia had become as essential to his life as air, unknowingly. Her sudden withdrawal made him uncomfortable everywhere.
He came out in a robe and lit a cigarette by the window. Aurelia liked him in a robe, and in the middle of the night, she would reach in to touch his abs.
Halfway through the smoking, he finally couldn't resist and called Betty.
"Betty, where did you put the key to the guest room?"
