Chapter 178 Kneeling by the Grave All Night
Maria felt terrible for Chelsea and wanted to hug her, but she was tied up and could only kneel. "Chelsea, don't be scared. I'm here," she said weakly.
Chelsea cried harder. "Mom, what are those flickering lights? Are they ghost lights?"
Maria glanced over and said, "No, Chelsea, don't look."
The leader sneered, "Let's go, guys. Let them repent in peace."
As the four men left the cemetery, passing graves, the women's cries mixed with owl hoots in the eerie countryside. Even the tough guys felt uneasy.
The scarred man cursed, "Damn it. If that girl didn't pay so much, I wouldn't have dared do this. It's too creepy." They quickened their pace.
In the parking lot outside, a black Maybach was hidden in the night. Inside, a man sat in the back, fiddling with his watch.
His assistant asked, "Mr. Semona, should we move?"
"Let Ms. Semona vent first, then we'll act," he said calmly.
The assistant suggested, "Should we spook those women a bit?"
The man nodded, "Go ahead."
Inside the cemetery, with the men gone, only Chelsea and Maria remained. Chelsea cried uncontrollably, thinking it was scarier without the men. A few slaps were better than this; at least they were human.
She felt surrounded by ghosts, especially from the grave she had wronged the day before. She feared the spirit would come for her.
"Mom, I'm so scared." Chelsea's cries echoed, making it worse. Though it was her voice, it felt like a ghost wailing in her ear.
Maria was also scared but had to stay strong for Chelsea, hoping someone would find them by dawn. "Chelsea, stop crying," she said.
Chelsea cried harder. "Mom, I'm really scared. Do you see that ghost over there?"
Maria's hair stood on end.
Then, another cry reached them. Maria kept comforting Chelsea. "Chelsea, stop crying. We'll be fine. Trust me."
Chelsea sniffled, "Mom, that wasn't me just now."
Silence fell between them. The mournful voice of a woman sounded closer, "I died miserably! Blood for blood! My head hurts. I want revenge!"
The cries were getting closer; Maria and Chelsea were petrified. Chelsea stopped crying, fearing it would attract whatever was out there.
Maria was on the verge of fainting, recalling Brenda's horrific car accident. She had sneaked to see the scene. Brenda, badly injured and covered in blood, had been rushed to the hospital but died before finishing her will.
Every cry sounded like Brenda's voice to Maria.
Brenda was back for revenge!
Maria was losing it. "Stay away! You crashed your car because you couldn't drive! Don't blame us!"
Maria started babbling in fear, and Chelsea quickly shouted, "Mom, stop! It's coming closer."
With a thud, Maria fainted by Brenda's grave.
"Mom, wake up! Don't leave me alone!" Chelsea broke out in a cold sweat, her scalp tingling. With Maria out cold, she felt the ghost would come for her next.
Summoning all her courage, she looked towards the cries. It was pitch black.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel had the artificial lake drained, relieved they found no one. He was sure Chelsea had tricked Daphne into thinking she had fallen into the water, which led everyone to believe Chelsea had indeed fallen in.
Now, thinking clearly, Nathaniel believed Chelsea wouldn't be as careless as a child. She cherished her unborn baby and would be extra careful. She wouldn't just fall into the lake like that.
After searching all night, they realized they had been misled.
Back upstairs, Nathaniel sat on the couch. Daphne came in and slapped herself. "Mr. Heilbronn, it's my fault. Miss Thompson was missing because of me. I failed you."
Nathaniel helped her up. "Daphne, go rest. It isn't your fault."
Chelsea had planned to leave, and no one could have stopped what happened. Daphne had just been used.
Zack called. "Mr. Heilbronn, the footage shows two men took Miss Thompson. It looks like a kidnapping."
Nathaniel jumped up from the couch. "Where did the car go?"
"Toward the outskirts," Zack replied.
Nathaniel grabbed his phone and headed downstairs. Following the car's trail from the surveillance footage, he tracked it all the way to the cemetery on the outskirts, his heart in his throat again. Just as he confirmed Chelsea hadn't drowned, he learned she was kidnapped.
The fact that she was brought to this place made him think the worst. Could the kidnappers be planning something even more sinister?
The car stopped in the cemetery parking lot, and dawn was breaking.
As Nathaniel got out, he heard a greeting from the next car. "Mr. Heilbronn, what a coincidence."
Nathaniel looked at Joe, surprised. At this time and place, it was no coincidence. He started to speculate.
"Mr. Semona, what brings you here? Exercising?" Nathaniel asked.
Joe adjusted his coat. "Mr. Heilbronn, what about you? Watching the sunrise at a cemetery?"
They had no business dealings and weren't rivals, yet there was tension.
Nathaniel was there to find someone and had no time for chit-chat. "Mr. Semona, excuse me. I have to go."
Joe smirked, his eyes unreadable, and gave Nathaniel a dismissive gesture.
The footage ended there. Nathaniel saw the dense graves and a security room, so he strode towards the security room.
