Chapter 314 Return to the Bloom Villa
Aurelia paused and asked,
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Nathaniel said aggrievedly,
"I wanted to tell you that time, but when you opened the glove compartment, you got mad. Who knew what you were thinking? You even said you'd never ride in my car again."
Aurelia did remember that incident. She was riding in his car back to the Heilbronn Villa and wanted to grab a tissue. When she opened the glove compartment, it was full of women's items.
Those things weren't hers, so they must have been Chelsea's. Who else but that bitch Chelsea could sit in Nathaniel's car?
She was so furious that she wanted to get out of the car. Nathaniel wouldn't let her, and they had an unpleasant ride back to the Heilbronn Villa.
Aurelia pursed her red lips and said,
"Then explain it to me, what's with the sanitary pads in the glove compartment? Are you, a grown man, using sanitary pads?"
Nathaniel laughed in exasperation, saying,
"If I had known you'd be so misunderstand me, I would have brought them to give out as company benefits. Last time, you suddenly got your period in my car and complained that I didn't have any tissues. Did you forget?"
Aurelia was momentarily speechless. He wasn't lying, that did happen. She had suddenly gotten her period, and his car didn't even have emergency tissues, so she complained for a long time.
Aurelia said, "So, did you prepare the sanitary pads for me?"
Nathaniel said angrily,
"Who else did you think they were for?"
Aurelia said, "I thought they were for Chelsea!"
If Nathaniel weren't driving, he would have flicked her forehead,
"What does her period have to do with me? Why would I buy them for her?"
"Isn't she your true love? What's the big deal about buying her sanitary pads? Is a man's affection so worthless?"
Nathaniel felt a tightness in his chest. For the first time, he found Aurelia so sharp-tongued, hitting him with one retort after another. He smiled bitterly. If she had been this straightforward before, maybe there wouldn't have been so many misunderstandings between them.
"I don't love her. How many times have I told you? I used to be grateful to her, then I hated her, and now she's like air to me, insignificant. So, can we just not talk about her anymore?"
Aurelia pursed her lips and turned her face to the window, watching the scenery fly by. She realized that he had driven off,
"Where are you taking me?"
Caleb was still waiting for her in the parking lot. After a few seconds, Aurelia looked at Nathaniel suspiciously, now suspecting he did it on purpose.
First, he changed the subject to trick her into the passenger seat, then kept chatting with her until she forgot.
How did she not realize that Nathaniel was so cunning four years ago ?
Nathaniel slowed down a bit, mainly afraid she might jump out of the car. Once, during an argument, she had done just that, and luckily Zack's driving skills saved the day.
"Aurelia, does your son have someone to look after him?"
Thinking about the child brought a pang of sadness to Nathaniel. He longed to have a baby with her, preferably a daughter who would beas cute and sweet as his 'good friend' Dorothy, calling him daddy. The mere thought of it filled him with happiness.
Unfortunately, all the good things happened to Joe. That bastard not only had a daughter but also a son with Aurelia, making him the ultimate winner in life.
"Jacob is with..."
She almost said, "Jacob is with my brother," but quickly corrected herself, saying,
"Jacob is with Joe."
Nathaniel fell silent for a moment, quitely digesting this bitterness. Since the child was being look after, he no longer worried about her coming home late.
"Aurelia, I'm taking you somewhere."
"Where?"
Nathaniel didn't answer, just stepped on the gas.
Aurelia was jolted. She looked at the changing scenery outside. The city had changed a lot in four years. She couldn't remember if she had been on this street before. Even if she had, the shops had changed owners and signs, making it unfamiliar to her.
She clutched her phone and opened Facebook to message Caleb, telling him not to wait and that she would make it up to him with a meal another day.
The car made several turns before finally heading down a quiet street with few cars.
Every streetlight and tree became familiar to Aurelia. Since the car accident four years ago, she hadn't been back.
It wasn't until Nathaniel drove into the garage that Aurelia snapped out of it.
They had returned to the Bloom Villa, the marital home Reed had bought for them.
A flood of memories overwhelmed her, leaving her feeling lost. What she didn't know was that Nathaniel had only returned once after she left. He never had the courage to enter this home without her.
Without her, it couldn't be called a home.
The car stopped, and they sat silently in the dark.
After a while, Nathaniel broke the silence, saying,
"Aurelia, get out. We're here."
Aurelia collected herself and asked,
"Why did we come here?"
Nathaniel casually replied,
"Bring you back to choose a bag."
But in his heart, he thought, this was where it all began. To him, no place in the world but the Bloom Villa deserved to be called 'home.' The place he lived now was just a place to sleep.
He brought her back, selfishly hoping to keep her here.
Aurelia didn't speak. The atmosphere in the car was tense. Nathaniel knew she was feeling complicated because he felt the same way.
"Aurelia, in the years you were gone, I didn't come back here in the years you've been gone.."
Nathaniel instinctively reached for his pocket, wanting a cigarette, but remembered she didn't like the smell and withdrew his hand.
He rolled down the window, letting in the summer heat.
Nathaniel loosened his tie and unbuttoned his shirt.
"Aurelia, I'm not as strong as I seem."
Nathaniel hesitated and continued,
"I also have things I am afraid of. Losing the one I love makes me lose control. When I dream of you at night and wake up holding nothing, I feel so lost I could cry. If I hadn't found you, I wouldn't have had the courage to return to the Bloom Villa in this lifetime."
Aurelia turned her head and, by the garage light, saw his perfect profile. She admitted she still liked handsome men; the first time she saw his face, she was smitten.
His looks perfectly matched her aesthetic from every angle.
In these four years, he had only become a bit thinner, but otherwise, he hadn't changed much.
Time was always kind to men.
"Have you been living in your current place all these years?"
Nathaniel said with a slight smile,
"Not entirely. I spent the first year in the office. Then, when I had too much stuff, I bought a villa near the company."
Nathaniel didn't dare to say he had slept by her tombstone for a month.
That month was the darkest time in Nathaniel's life. Every day felt like living in darkness, like a walking corpse. The pain in his heart was so intense he couldn't feel physical pain. He even endured a broken leg without painkillers, barely hanging on, feeling he should join her and their two babies.
Life without hope was a form of spiritual torture for him.
