Chapter 70 She Won't Get Pregnant
Aurelia's heart skipped a beat. She could hear her heartbeat.
"Reed is outside. Don't mess around."
She brought up Reed's name, aiming to deter him from engaging in any improper behavior.
Nathaniel chuckled lightly. "Reed has left long ago, believe it or not. Not only is he not outside, but he doesn't let anyone else upstairs."
"Are you going to help or not, or I find Mom?"
"You really don't treat your mother-in-law as an outsider. With all these marks on you, you shouldn't let her see them."
Nathaniel blocked all her paths with one sentence.
He moved up and down a few times; the fabric stuck in the zipper was pulled out, and the zipper smoothly pulled to the top.
Aurelia breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
Nathaniel turned her around, face to face,
"If you want to thank me, do it sincerely. Move back to the main bedroom to sleep. Stop arguing with me. You can't sleep on your own."
He mused, "Such a cold-hearted woman. She left without a second thought. We shared the same room for three years. Sleeping alone must be so unsettling! When I roll over in the middle of the night and find her absence, I, too, struggle to adjust."
She used to be afraid of the dark, Bailey, and rain, but now she's not afraid of anything.
She could be dramatic to no end and ruthless when necessary.
"I'm not arguing with you. I'm serious. You've had your fun for three years. With your status and position, you can find any woman you want, especially now that Chelsea is back. Let's separate amicably; don't make everyone unhappy."
Nathaniel felt very sad. Subconsciously, he touched his pocket to find a cigarette. After a few seconds, he stared at the woman in front of him, calm and composed, with no hint of joking.
"Do you really want to leave me, or have you found someone else?"
Aurelia flew into a rage. She loved him to the core and never thought she would betray him one day. He was the person she fell in love with when she was young; he dazzled her whole world.
If she hadn't been hurt so deeply, she wouldn't have tried every means to leave him.
"Nathaniel, I have never done anything to betray you. I haven't even thought about it."
Nathaniel's anger was somewhat soothed, but he was still puzzled.
"Then why?"
"You should understand why I want a divorce. Why did you agree to sign the divorce agreement with me in the first place?" Aurelia asked him.
Nathaniel fell silent, a corner of his lips lifted, looking at her as if she were a fool,
"Do you care so much about Chelsea?"
"Of course."
Aurelia felt both angry and sad when she thought of Chelsea, whom she took as a tumor in her marriage, but Nathaniel was unwilling to remove that tumor completely.
She cared a lot.
"She doesn’t deserve your attention at all," he said.
Aurelia sneered, "Put yourself in my shoes. If I had a first love, we occasionally contacted each other. He came to have dinner with me every day, went out to play, took happy photos, and sent them to your phone. Do you think our marriage could continue like this?"
Her words choked Nathaniel. "I don't have dinner with her every day, go out to play, or take photos with her."
That was his explanation.
Aurelia saw him still trying to argue. Men always liked to solve problems with lies, and they would never admit to cheating unless caught red-handed.
"But you slept with her."
Nathaniel was completely speechless. He was in the wrong in this matter. He had never had any thoughts about Chelsea, and he couldn't even remember any details of that night.
He now regretted deeply drinking with Chelsea that night. If he hadn't drunk, this wouldn't have happened.
And he still hadn't thought of a perfect solution.
Chelsea didn't want a car, a house, or money. She wanted Nathaniel.
"Aurelia, give me some time to sort this out."
"If you slept with her, our marriage is tainted. Time won't turn back. It can't be resolved."
Nathaniel clenched his fists. For the first time, he had heard such harsh words from her. She said the marriage was tainted, which meant he was dirty. He had no words to defend himself.
He couldn't remember how it happened that night. Sometimes, he doubted if Chelsea had made up this lie, but he felt a girl wouldn't use her purity as a bargaining chip.
For the first time, he felt powerless. Things that could be solved with money were trivial. What he faced now was beyond his ability to solve.
The atmosphere in the dressing room became tense. His phone vibrated in his pocket.
It was Chelsea again.
Nathaniel answered it.
Aurelia saw 'Chelsea' on the screen and smiled bitterly, then quickly turned away.
Nathaniel found this smile extremely ironic. She had transitioned from disgust toward Chelsea to indifference.
After hesitating for a few seconds, he still answered the call.
"If there's nothing urgent, don't call me," he said to Chelsea.
On the other end, Chelsea paused for a moment, her voice trembling. "Nathaniel, I'm feeling a bit unwell now. Can you come over and accompany me?"
"If you're unwell, go to the hospital. I'm not a doctor. Also, if you're not feeling well, move back to your parents' house. It's more convenient to have someone take care of you."
After saying that, he hung up. Each of his replies was indifferent and devoid of emotion, leaving Chelsea speechless. It seemed that Nathaniel wanted to prove something to Aurelia.
Both of them remained in their previous positions without moving, standing almost close to each other. Aurelia could clearly hear Chelsea's words on the phone.
"She's feeling unwell. You should go see her quickly."
Nathaniel locked his phone screen and put it back in his pocket,
"Aurelia, her life shouldn't be my responsibility. I've known her for over ten years. She saved my life. We can't completely cut off contact, can you understand?"
Aurelia swept her tongue over her lips, and to her astonishment, she discovered that mentioning Chelsea's name didn't stir up as much animosity as it once did. She felt detached from this convoluted situation.
"So you're just treating her as a lifesaver, nothing more?"
Nathaniel answered, "Yes, or maybe there's still friendship."
After all, it was impossible to have only gratitude after over a decade of relationships. When he was young, he thought that was love, and he even promised to marry her and protect her for a lifetime.
During this recent period, when he wanted to divorce Aurelia, he suddenly realized that his feelings for Chelsea were not love at all. When facing her, he never felt the same excitement as when he was with Aurelia. He just wanted Chelsea to be happy and safe, nothing more.
Of course, Aurelia didn't believe him.
"Nathaniel, I think a man with normal values wouldn't let a good friend get pregnant. Do you have such people in your circle?"
Nathaniel furrowed his brows, not understanding what she was talking about.
"Who's pregnant? Be clear."
Aurelia was speechless; at this point, he was still pretending to be clueless,
"Chelsea is pregnant with your child as a soon-to-be father, don't you know? You must be looking forward to your child, right?"
Nathaniel took a deep breath, feeling somewhat suffocated.
"What are you talking about? She's not pregnant, and even if she were, it's not mine."
In his urgency, his words were not very pleasant. He just wanted to convey that Chelsea wouldn't be pregnant. That day, when he came out of Jade Community, he deliberately left Zack to go upstairs to deliver the medicine. Zack also saw Chelsea drink it. She couldn't be pregnant, and even if she were, it wouldn't show in such a short time.
He realized that the misunderstanding between the two was not as simple as just Chelsea.
"What led you to the conclusion that Chelsea is pregnant with my child?"
