Chapter 396 Investigating the Truth
Nathaniel took the opportunity to claim credit, "Just one compliment?"
"What else? Even if I wanted to reward you with something else, you're not here."
Nathaniel wanted to teleport to her side to see what kind of reward she could give him. She spoke so freely, but at most, she would probably just give him a kiss.
"Aurelia, two days."
He was counting the days on his fingers. Besides eating and sleeping, he was speeding through his work, wishing he could finish everything immediately and fly to her side.
Aurelia teased him through the screen, "Mr. Heilbronn, there's no need to rush. The flights won't stop. You should handle the company's matters first before coming over. As a CEO, how can you leave the company and run off? Isn't that right? Work is the most important."
The latter part of her sentence had a hint of sarcasm for Nathaniel.
Back when they were at the Bloom Villa, she wanted to take a trip to the beach during the holidays, but Nathaniel had his assistant book a flight and hotel for her alone, saying, "You go by yourself. I haven't finished my work here. I'm a CEO; I can't just leave the company and run off. Work is the most important."
That was what he said, and now Aurelia was using those exact words against him.
Nathaniel scratched his head in confusion, thinking to himself, how many bad things had he done in the past? She always had something to hold against him.
"Aurelia, you are the most important."
"No, work is the most important. Mr. Heilbronn, you have kids now. You need to support them, save money for them, and make sure they have a head start in life."
"Isn't it already a head start?"
For the first time, Nathaniel doubted his financial capabilities. The Heilbronn family's wealth should be enough to ensure a worry-free life for two kids, right?
Aurelia responded the next second, "Not enough."
Parents could never give enough wealth to their children; the more, the better. She wished she could save all the world's wealth for her children.
Nathaniel sighed, "Alright, I'll work hard to make money, support the kids, and take care of my wife!"
Aurelia tidied up her office, locking important documents in the drawer, "Alright, I won't talk to you anymore. I need to go home for dinner. Dorothy and Jacob are waiting for me."
"Drive safely on your way home."
Aurelia hung up the phone, locked the door, and went downstairs with her bag.
The sky was already completely dark. Most people in the area commuted by subway, so there weren't many people in the parking lot.
The wind had picked up in the afternoon, and the weather was unpredictable. It was sunny in the morning, but now it was oppressively overcast, as if a heavy rain was brewing.
Fortunately, there were streetlights, so Aurelia wasn't afraid. She was just worried that if it started raining, there would be traffic, making her arrival time uncertain.
Thinking of this, she quickened her pace. Her car was just ahead, and she pressed the car button, making the lights flash.
As she approached and was about to open the car door, a tall figure came close, catching her off guard and lifting her up, walking in the opposite direction.
Aurelia didn't have time to scream. She felt a cloth covering her nose, and within seconds, she began to lose consciousness, her limbs weakening. She felt she had been drugged, tried to call for help but couldn't make a sound, and passed out within seconds.
Imperick.
Nathaniel planned to stay in the office tonight.
The detective from Elvenia sent him the results of the image identification, confirming it was the same person as in the photo he provided.
Nathaniel was surprised.
Marcus had been searching for this person for years without success, yet Nathaniel had found them by chance. He wasn't sure if he should immediately inform Marcus, who hadn't appeared in front of him for days. He wondered if their last encounter at the hospital had affected him.
Marcus hadn't come to see him or bothered Aurelia in the past few days.
Nathaniel first called the detective, "Is the identification result reliable?"
"Mr. Heilbronn, the result is reliable. It was done by the most professional institution here, and it's a perfect match. We can confirm it's the same person."
Nathaniel lit a cigarette and stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, the dim light in the office accentuating his tall and imposing figure.
He spoke in a low voice, "What's the deal with Alex?"
"Mr. Heilbronn, Alex is the biggest drug lord in the area, extremely powerful and not someone to be trifled with."
Nathaniel took a drag from his cigarette and exhaled a ring of smoke. This matter seemed full of doubts to him. From the information he had, Burry and Marcus had a deep bond and were married, a perfect match. Why would she fake her death?
"How did Burry get involved with Alex?"
"Mr. Heilbronn, I've been following Alex for a while. Every time I see Alex, Burry is with him. It seems Alex dotes on her. I also found out that before the avalanche incident, he had expressed his love for Burry, but she rejected him."
"I suspect he wanted to forcefully marry Burry and, fearing she would still think of her original husband, orchestrated the avalanche to kill Marcus and make her give up. But Marcus was lucky and survived."
Nathaniel pondered. If what the detective said was true, it would be troublesome. Finding Burry and rescuing her from a crime lord wouldn't be easy.
No matter how capable he was, he was still a legitimate businessman with law-abiding friends. He didn't dare get involved in the underworld; his grandfather would kill him.
Nathaniel transferred more money to the detective, "Investigate further. Find out the exact relationship between Alex and Burry. If you can get any of Alex's personal items, even better."
Nathaniel had his suspicions. People who weren't related might look alike, but not to the point where ordinary people couldn't tell them apart.
He suspected that Burry might be Aurelia's biological sister. As for why she didn't grow up in her home country and ended up in Elvenia, that was something Norman would have to answer.
With such a big mystery weighing on his mind, he couldn't leave Imperick with peace of mind. Before flying to Coral Bay, he needed answers.
After finishing his cigarette, Nathaniel grabbed his car keys and left the building.
Outskirts prison.
Nathaniel parked his car in the night.
At this hour, the prisoners had finished their day's labor, watched the news, and could now wash up and sleep.
Norman was suddenly summoned by a guard, "Norman, come out. You have a visitor."
The other inmates looked at him with envy. Visits were scheduled and couldn't happen just anytime.
A visit at this hour, and being personally notified by a high-ranking officer, meant the visitor wasn't an ordinary person.
