Chapter 303 That's How Daddy Did It
Nathaniel squinted and held back a bit before saying, "If you keep laughing, I might need to find another doctor."
Mark finally got serious and asked, "Tell me, even with all the strong meds I gave you, your old ailment didn't get better. How did it suddenly improve? Did something special happen recently?"
Nathaniel admitted, "I found her in another city. She wasn't dead four years ago; she survived by luck."
Mark slapped his thigh and said, "Well, there you go. So why are you still coming to me? That girl is more effective than any treatment plan. She's the cure for your illness."
Nathaniel paused and said, "She is effective. I almost never have hallucinations now, but I often experience uncontrollable shaking, heart palpitations, and sweating in the middle of the night, especially when she doesn't want to talk to me during the day. It feels terrible."
Mark's expression turned serious. Curing one problem only to have another arise—this guy really knows how to make trouble for him.
Mark said, "Come with me to the treatment room."
Mark's treatment room was actually just a room in his house that he had temporarily converted for treating Nathaniel, his only patient. Nathaniel was already very familiar with this room.
Nathaniel walked in as usual and sat in the fixed chair. The furnishings in the room were familiar to him, so he didn't feel uncomfortable.
Mark pondered for a long time and asked him a few questions.
Nathaniel answered according to his thoughts. After testing, he felt mentally and physically exhausted.
Mark opened the curtains and said, "Come out, it's done."
Nathaniel followed him out and asked in confusion, "Mark, what are the test results?"
Mark walked around the yard with his hands behind his back, his expression no longer as relaxed as before. After a long while, he spoke, "You're quite anxious right now. Mainly, you are desperately wanting to do something, but your self-esteem is at rock bottom and you're afraid of failing. Are you trying to win that girl back but afraid she won't forgive you?"
Nathaniel gave a bitter smile. The questions Mark asked in the treatment room had nothing to do with this, yet he was right.
He felt like he was running naked, with no secrets at all.
Seeing him fall silent, Mark sighed again, saying, "So even you have moments of self-doubt. I thought you'd never bow your head. Honestly, I'm curious about what kind of woman has driven you to this state."
Nathaniel frowned. How did he become a mental patient in Mark's eyes? There's a difference between psychological issues and mental illness, right?
"Mental patient?"
Mark added, "Don't be so quick to deny it. If I hadn't intervened four years ago, you'd probably be in a mental hospital by now."
Nathaniel felt a pang of bitterness and said, "Stop with the useless talk. What should I do now? Do I need medication?"
Mark kept pacing, seemingly thinking of a treatment plan. After a while, he finally stopped and started to speak, "Since you've already found that girl, any treatment plan I give you might not be as effective as a sentence from her. I advise you to take a leap of faith and push your limits. This is called seeking hope in desperate situations."
Nathaniel fell silent. He hadn't planned to give up. But he was just a bit discouraged. Being able to see Aurelia again was a gift from God. How could he give up so easily?
Even if Aurelia couldn't come back to him in the end, he wanted her to see his sincerity, to know that he had always kept her in his heart. He had been slow to realize his feelings before, but now he had awakened and deeply regretted his past actions.
If there was anything he could do to make up for the hurt he had caused Aurelia, he was willing to do it.
"I'm leaving," Nathaniel said, standing up after a moment of daze. He grabbed his car keys and headed for the door.
Mark called out to him, "Don't be a coward. Do whatever you want. If you win her back, bring her over sometime. I might be able to help you win her over."
Nathaniel waved his hand and walked out the door.
Night had fallen, as dark as ink.
He drove aimlessly through the streets and, without realizing it, ended up outside Aurelia's villa. Beneath the dense sycamore tree, everything was enveloped in darkness. His car parked there was completely hidden, as if this spot was tailor-made for him.
Nathaniel rolled down the window and lit a cigarette. Even the cigarette tasted bitter today.
He looked at the villa in front of him and smiled bitterly. Now he could only resort to hiding here and watching her secretly.
He had paid someone to buy this villa from Chelsea. When he got the house, he had gone inside once and remembered that the room on the left side of the third floor was her room.
At this moment, the room was lit, and occasionally he could hear the playful shouts of a boy.
The more he thought about it, the more his heart ached.
If he hadn't been so foolish four years ago, his two babies would be playing happily in the house now. Whether they were two boys, two girls, or ideally a boy and a girl, they would be living happily as a family of four.
Nathaniel was so lost in thought that he didn't notice when two tears rolled down his cheeks.
He had always been proud and aloof, never shedding a tear since he could remember, always solving problems in other ways.
He stared at Aurelia's window, and suddenly the light inside went out.
Nathaniel's heart tightened, and the veins on his arms bulged as he gripped the steering wheel.
She went to bed, and Joe was probably with her.
Inside the house.
Today, Jacob insisted on sleeping with Aurelia.
Aurelia had changed the bed linens, and the little guy was happily bouncing on the bed, treating it like a trampoline.
"Mommy, will you stay with me forever?"
Aurelia didn't dare to promise forever. After what happened four years ago, she had become very cautious. No one could guarantee that accidents wouldn't happen. She tucked Jacob into the bed and covered him up before responding,
"I'll stay with you for a long time."
Jacob blinked and asked, "How long is a long time?"
Aurelia said, "At least until you're an adult."
Jacob pouted, dissatisfied and said, "That's not enough. I'll be an adult in just over ten years. How can that be a long time? I don't care, I want you to stay with me forever."
Aurelia smiled, turned off the light, and hugged Jacob, saying, "When you grow up, you'll go to college, graduate school, and get a PhD. After graduation, you'll work. You can't always have Mommy with you, right? Besides, when you grow up, you'll get married and start a new family."
Jacob nestled in his mommy's arms, silent for a long time, then said, "Mommy, I don't want to start a family."
Aurelia asked, "Why not?"
This time, Jacob answered almost without thinking, "If a man is going to abandon his wife and children after starting a family and having kids, then why get married in the first place?"
Aurelia's heart tightened. She didn't know why Jacob would say such a thing. She wondered if she had taught him wrong, giving him a mistaken view of family.
"Jacob, why do you think that? Men don't abandon their wives and children when they start a family. They become a new family."
Jacob scoffed, saying, "But Daddy did that."
Aurelia's heart skipped a beat.
