Chapter 183 It's Too Late Now
Nathaniel hung up, got in the car, and rested a cigarette on the window. It was half-burned, but he hadn't taken a puff.
After a while, he put out the cigarette and stashed the half-pack, like he was done smoking for good.
About ten minutes later, Zack sent a location.
"Mr. Heilbronn, Mrs. Heilbronn has moved to this neighborhood. Here's the address."
He tightened his seatbelt and slowly drove out of the hospital.
Meanwhile, Aurelia got an email from Swan's leadership, inviting her to work in Melicia with a much higher salary and great conditions. She hesitated, unsure if she could manage alone with two kids in a foreign country.
She had thought about leaving Imperick but not Country Z. She still had friends there, which gave her a sense of security.
She closed her laptop and opened Facebook, asking in a group with Ulysses and Amber: [What do you think about me taking the babies abroad for work?]
Amber replied quickly: [As long as Nathaniel's not around, anywhere is good. Take the kids and go far away. I'd love to see his face when he finds out the truth.]
Aurelia was swayed, thinking, 'I need to stay far from Nathaniel, the farther the better.'
With that in mind, she replied to Swan's email: [I accept your offer and can start in half a month.]
Minutes later, she got a contract to review and sign online if everything was okay.
Aurelia was surprised. It was the middle of the night there, and she hadn't expected Swan's leadership to be waiting for her reply. She was touched by their sincerity.
The contract detailed her benefits, including housing, which would save her a lot of trouble.
Her phone rang, and she answered casually.
"Ms. Semona, there's a Mr. Heilbronn at the gate claiming to be your husband. Can I let him in?"
Aurelia was stunned and looked at the screen. It was a call from the community security.
"I don't know him. Please don't tell him my apartment number," Aurelia said.
The security guard glanced at Nathaniel, who didn't look like a bad person.
"Ms. Semona, he knows your apartment number."
Aurelia paused and added, "We have personal issues. Please don't let him in. I'm afraid he might be a threat."
The security guard hung up and told Nathaniel, "Sorry, Mr. Heilbronn, Ms. Semona says she doesn't know you. I can't let you in. Maybe you two should talk it out?"
Nathaniel frowned, took out his phone, and called Aurelia. The ringing continued for a minute before it automatically hung up. When he called again, it went straight to voicemail.
She had turned off her phone!
Nathaniel stood there with his hands on his hips for a while, then went back to negotiate with the security guard. The guard was firm and refused.
With no luck, he returned to his car and called Zack, "Buy a house in Aurelia's neighborhood. I need to be a resident there within an hour!"
An hour later, Nathaniel smoothly drove into the neighborhood.
Aurelia was working on her design drafts in the study when there was a knock on the door.
She had ordered groceries online. Without much thought, she dropped her work and headed for the door.
When she saw Nathaniel's face, she froze. It was too late to close the door. Nathaniel walked in like he owned the place.
Unsure of how she should read his current mood, Aurelia made way for him as he kicked off his shoes. Seeing that there were no slippers for men, he walked barefoot across the floor.
After a long silence, Nathaniel spoke first, "Aurelia, come back to Bloom Villa with me."
Aurelia decisively refused, "I'm not going back."
Nathaniel, feeling a bit helpless, said, "I've had Chelsea move out. No one will bother you."
Aurelia sneered inwardly, thinking, 'She does more than just bother me. Can you really cut ties with her?'
"Where she lives has nothing to do with me. You can take her back home and not consider my feelings. I don't want to go back," Aurelia said.
She looked around the rented house. It wasn't big, but she had decorated it warmly. Most importantly, there was no one she disliked to annoy her.
"This is my home now," she made it clear to him.
For the first time, Nathaniel felt at a loss. Aurelia was now impervious to both soft and hard tactics, completely ignoring him.
He frowned and asked, "So, what's it going to be? Are you coming back with me, or should I move in here?"
Aurelia was startled by his shameless words. She thought, 'He is so picky about food, living conditions, and environment. Why would he leave a big villa to squeeze into a rental with me?'
'I'm done dealing with him.'
She reminded, "Mr. Heilbronn, have you forgotten something? We're divorced."
Nathaniel smirked, "The paperwork isn't complete yet. We're still legally married."
Aurelia lowered her head and said, "Does it matter now? We'll get divorced sooner or later. There's no need to make each other unhappy."
She had made a huge effort to escape to this place, avoiding her mother's villa and opting for a rental instead. And now, just a few days after moving in, he was already here, pursuing her. If she had known it would turn out this way, she wondered why she had gone through all that trouble in the first place.
"The environment here is simple. I'm afraid you won't be comfortable, Mr. Heilbronn."
Nathaniel loosened his tie and took a step closer, forcing Aurelia against the shoe cabinet. The next second, he lifted her onto the shoe cabinet, placing his hands on either side of her legs, bending down to look at her.
This version of Nathaniel felt unfamiliar to Aurelia. His usually cold face seemed to have a bit of warmth, something she hadn't felt in the past three years.
She didn't know why she felt this way. Maybe it was because she had been sick and feverish these past few days, making her mind fuzzy.
After a few seconds of silence, Nathaniel broke the strange atmosphere.
He asked, "Aurelia, are you feeling uncomfortable?" His voice was low, with a deep tenderness in his eyes.
Aurelia stared into his eyes, feeling like she could hear something melting inside her. She silently cursed herself for being weak. He had only shown a bit of concern, and she was already finding excuses for his past mistakes.
Aurelia cleared her throat and said, "After taking the medicine, I feel much better. The fever has gone down, and I'll be fine after a few days of rest."
Nathaniel raised a hand to tuck her hair behind her ear, bending down further to meet her gaze.
He smiled and said, "I was asking if the baby in your belly is making you uncomfortable?"
