Chapter 358 Aurelia's Birth
Jacoba's recently kindled desire was suddenly dampened. Resorting to threats and bribes—what kind of parenting was that?
Nathaniel watched as the little one reluctantly let go of the robot, pouting. Just giving up like that, was it really that hard to get him to willingly call him "Dad"?
In comparison, Dorothy seemed much more obedient.
Nathaniel's office here was quite large, and all the equipment used was smart products produced by his own company.
Jacoba and Dorothy discovered a new source of amusement—a smart curtain that they opened and closed repeatedly.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel was holding an important meeting with several key technical staff members from the company, all while this playful distraction was happening in the background.
After the meeting, Reed called. Somehow, Reed had heard that Nathaniel had brought his kids to work. He was excited and eager to call Nathaniel to confirm the news.
"I heard you brought two kids to work?" Reed asked.
Nathaniel paused. He hadn't told Reed about this yet. Beatrice and Ashley had caused a scene, and he was worried the kids might have a negative impression of the Heilbronn family.
He decided it would be wiser to wait until the kids had accepted him before introducing them to his family.
Who would have thought Reed would find out so quickly, just on the second day of bringing the kids?
"Yes, Grandpa."
On the other end of the line, Reed was extremely excited. After a few seconds of silence, he asked, "Are they Aurelia's children?"
Nathaniel chuckled softly. "They are ours."
After he said that, the phone went silent for a long time. Nathaniel knew Reed was probably busy wiping away tears again. The old man had become more emotional with age, almost like a child.
"Grandpa, the kids and I are still getting to know each other. Introducing so many relatives all at once might be too much for them. I'll discuss it with Aurelia and choose a suitable time to bring the kids to meet you."
Reed, choking up, replied, "Okay, okay, listen to Aurelia."
Reed hung up the phone and immediately held a memorial ceremony for his late wife, talking to her photo, "Our family has descendants now, and two at once. Isn't that wonderful news? I wonder what those little ones look like. I hope they take after their mother more. Our son isn't exactly a great role model!"
Beatrice, passing by the study, overheard Reed's last sentence. She had long harbored resentment over Reed's favoritism towards Aurelia. Favoritism was one thing, but why belittle her son?
She had kept the secret of Aurelia's children to herself, fearing that Reed, in his excitement, would give all the family's valuable assets to Aurelia, benefiting that woman for nothing.
But it didn't take long for him to find out.
Beatrice felt a tightness in her chest. Nathaniel had sternly warned her not to contact that woman privately again. For the sake of her two grandsons, she had temporarily set aside her plans to confront Aurelia.
But she couldn't forget that four years ago, when Reed was gravely ill, he had left almost half of his estate to Aurelia in his will. She had always been wary of this.
When Aurelia was still part of the Heilbronn family, it was one thing. But now that she and Nathaniel were divorced, who knew who she might marry next? Letting her take half of Reed's estate to benefit another man?
Even if she was now a lady of a wealthy family, the assets taken from Reed should be returned, at least to be allocated to her two grandsons.
Beatrice pondered, forming a plan in her mind.
Beatrice returned to her bedroom, locked the door, and called her brother, "Paul, you work under Joe. Find out if his sister is favored at home."
After the meeting, Nathaniel had no more work for the day. He had deliberately asked Zack to schedule all his work in the morning, leaving the afternoon free for family.
Today was Valentine's Day.
Nathaniel had prepared a gift long ago, just waiting for this day to present it.
At this moment, the two kids were happily playing in his office. Nathaniel called Zack in, "How do you and your girlfriend usually celebrate Valentine's Day?"
Zack was in an exceptionally good mood today, unable to hide his smile.
"Mr. Heilbronn, she is no longer just my girlfriend. We got married today!"
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. No wonder his assistant was so cheerful today, smiling at everyone. It turned out to be good news.
"Congratulations."
"Thank you, Mr. Heilbronn."
"Planning to celebrate tonight?"
Zack laughed. "Absolutely! We make it a point to celebrate every year. Life needs those special moments; otherwise, how do you keep the spark alive for the years ahead?"
Nathaniel agreed with this. He recalled the years he was married to Aurelia. She had always been the one to organize things, while he just showed up, sometimes even missing out due to business trips or work, leaving her alone.
The more he thought about it, the more he felt he owed her.
He needed to make it up to her.
But he wasn't naturally romantic. Swiping a card to buy gifts was easy, but coming up with ways to woo a woman was beyond him.
"So, how are you planning to celebrate?"
Zack scratched his head, thinking, 'Why is Nathaniel asking for such details? Is it appropriate to share such private matters?'
Seeing Zack's reluctance, Nathaniel added, "You've been with me for a few years now. Your work skills have improved a lot, and this job is quite demanding. Now that you're married, as your boss and a friend, I genuinely hope you have a good life."
Zack didn't pay much attention to this long official speech, but Nathaniel paused and then got to the main point,
"I've decided to give you a raise, starting today. I hope this marks a good beginning for you. I'll also cover your celebration expenses tonight, from my personal account."
Zack was moved to tears.
In his most uncertain year, he had applied to the Heilbronn Group as a special assistant. The job was tough but rewarding.
Nathaniel was a serious boss but offered generous treatment to his subordinates. If it weren't for Nathaniel giving him a chance to showcase his talents, this poor guy from out of town wouldn't have been able to establish himself in Imperick. Not only did he buy a house for himself, but he also bought one for his parents.
These were things he never dared to dream of before.
