Chapter 93 Why Not Go Public Now?
Exiting the elevator and walking a short distance ahead was the CEO's office.
Apart from his office, this floor only had a large conference room, which was silent when no meetings were taking place.
Aurelia knocked on the CEO's office door and heard a 'come in!' before pushing the door open.
Nathaniel was working at his desk, with Zack in the office. The HR manager, Luna Rodriguez, who had helped her with the onboarding process before, was also there.
"Aurelia, please sign this salary adjustment agreement again."
Luna handed her the agreement.
Aurelia took it with a hint of confusion, scanning through it from start to finish. Her gaze paused for a moment at the salary amount.
Luna smiled and explained, "As per tradition, the top-ranked individual in the Design Department receives a doubled salary. Congratulations, Aurelia!"
Aurelia thanked him.
Luna handed her the pen. "Please sign your names on the two copies, and it will be effective upon stamping."
Aurelia glanced up at Nathaniel. He hadn't looked at her since she entered, leaving her feeling a bit disappointed. After signing, she handed the agreement and pen back to Luna.
"Thank you, Mrs. Rodriguez."
Luna, a very astute person, glanced at Aurelia and Nathaniel, her mind churning with thoughts. The Design Department had maintained this practice for many years, yet no one had ever had the privilege of signing a salary adjustment form in the CEO's office before. The fact that Aurelia and Nathaniel were in such a situation suggested their relationship was undoubtedly more complex than it seemed.
"You are welcome; this is my job.” She then turned to Nathaniel and said, “Mr. Heilbronn, I'll take this to get stamped first and then bring it back."
Nathaniel merely uttered an affirmative hum.
As Aurelia finished signing the salary adjustment form and was about to leave with Luna, Zack blocked her path.
"Mr. Heilbronn, I still have some work pending. I'll go attend to it first."
With that, he directly closed the glass door, leaving Aurelia inside.
"Do you no longer want the salary adjustment form?"
Nathaniel, finally done with his tasks, set aside the documents and casually played with the gold-plated pen, looking at her.
Aurelia hesitated. He had risen from his chair and was approaching her with a serious yet somewhat dangerous demeanor.
"I didn't expect my wife to be able to defeat everyone in the Design Department."
His figure loomed over her, causing Aurelia to take a step back, pressing against the door.
Nathaniel suddenly chuckled lightly. Looking down at her from a higher vantage point, his gaze fell on her fluttering eyelashes.
"What are you hiding? Tell me, what have you been upset with me about recently?"
After holding back for a few days, he couldn't resist asking, wondering where he had displeased her again. The gift he brought back for her remained unopened. She ignored him every day, turning her back to him while sleeping, a silent treatment he had endured for three days.
Aurelia felt overwhelmed by his powerful presence, a sense of suffocation creeping over her. She licked her lips.
"Let's talk about it at home."
At work, she didn't want to bring up those troubling matters and feared being gossiped about by colleagues for being so close to him.
The workplace had never been fair to women. Once a woman achieved some success, a mere conversation with the boss might lead to suspicions like, 'Is she getting ahead by sleeping with the boss?'
She had heard such remarks at the company, not directed at herself, but as a woman, it was uncomfortable to hear.
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. "Well, looks like you quite enjoy talking about things while shedding tears at home, huh?"
Aurelia lifted her gaze to his appealing visage, finding herself at a loss for words. His ability to deliver flirtatious remarks that caused her cheeks to redden and her heart to flutter while maintaining a serious demeanor left her speechless.
At that moment, the two stood very close together, Aurelia's back against the glass door with no room to retreat. She placed her hand on his chest, wary of his proximity.
"Step back; it's better to maintain some distance between us in the office."
Nathaniel's chest quivered. "Do you know what your current actions resemble?"
He whispered in her ear. "Like you're seducing me."
His hot breath, along with his words, entered her ear, sending a tingling sensation to her. She instantly withdrew her hand from his chest.
"Don't do this. We might be seen."
"What's wrong with being seen? You are my lawful wife."
Upon hearing him say 'wife,' Aurelia's heart inexplicably trembled.
"Aren't you afraid of others finding out?"
"Why don't we just go public with our relationship now?"
Aurelia was swayed by his words, but her rational side reminded her of Chelsea standing between them.
"I heard Chelsea broke her leg."
Nathaniel replied, "I found out three days ago and have already arranged for the best doctor for her."
Talking about Chelsea, he sounded slightly impatient. Apparently, he didn’t want to bring Chelsea up at this moment.
Aurelia could guess the reason for his sudden return. She smiled bitterly, feeling helpless.
Nathaniel took the hand that had been on his chest moments ago and held it in his palm, gently rubbing her fingers.
"Aurelia, are you ignoring me because of this?" he asked.
Aurelia remained silent. She didn't want to admit it, but he had hit the mark.
Turning her head away, she avoided looking at him.
With the cool touch from her fingertips to the base of her fingers, Nathaniel lifted the hand to his lips and lightly kissed it.
Seeing the ring on her ring finger, Aurelia felt a wave of excitement surging through her. It was the engagement ring he had promised her.
He knew how to please her. The sight of the ring made her surrender once again.
"I've had it for a few days now. You should open it yourself."
Aurelia's cold heart gradually softened. "You didn't say anything, so I didn't know it was a ring."
Nathaniel looked at the assertive woman and was displeased with her words. If the gift presented to her were not a ring, she would not accept it.
He lifted her chin with his large hand, leaning in to kiss her pink lips, entwining with her.
Aurelia felt a tingling sensation from his tongue, gradually regaining her composure.
"This is the office, you shouldn't..."
Before she could finish her sentence, he interrupted her completely.
So intense were Nathaniel’s kisses that Aurelia found it hard for her to breathe smoothly.
"Aurelia, let's leave together after work."
Nathaniel panted heavily.
Aurelia hesitated, looking up at him with disbelief. He was the one who wanted to keep their marriage a secret, warning her on her first day at work to maintain a distance in the office.
And now he was inviting her to leave together after work.
"I drove here."
He held her hand again, sliding his fingers gently between hers.
"Aurelia, ride in my car today."
Aurelia's mind was in a whirl, unable to think straight. Their fingers intertwined like this was a first, and he was now stirring her heart more than ever.
She felt that he loved her, their hearts beating as one.
This was the expectation she had held since marrying him, the moment of happiness like a fairy tale coming to life.
After a while, she finally asked, "Aren't you supposed to work overtime today?"
He seemed very busy these days, always occupied even after returning home.
Nathaniel chuckled lightly. "Don't you know why I've been working overtime these days?"
If there was no one to talk to at home, he preferred staying here alone, looking at those monotonous documents.
