Chapter 85 He's Coaxing Someone
Ulysses rubbed the back of his neck and apologized very nicely, "I said the wrong thing that day. I'm sorry."
Oscar didn't give him any respect in front of Aurelia. "Apologies don't work with me."
Ulysses was left speechless by the retort.
Aurelia finished buying water and listened quietly as the two argued, feeling they were like a couple exchanging sweet nothings.
"Aurelia, since you have someone else here to keep you company, I'll leave. We'll talk later if needed."
After saying this, Oscar opened the door and left, with Ulysses wiping his forehead and following him.
"Do you want to come to my place? We can have barbeque tonight."
Ulysses was straightforward in his speech and good at arguing but lacking in coaxing. A nearly six-foot-tall man just couldn't seem to find the right gentle words.
Oscar waved the keys in his hand and gave him a cold look. "Haven't you heard Aurelia say we've already eaten?"
"We can eat a little more."
Oscar stepped into his Ferrari. "I'm off. Maybe next time."
Ulysses didn't specifically invite him; he just mentioned it when they met. Who would want to go to his place anyway? He was not interested.
As Ulysses entered from outside, Aurelia looked at him curiously, making even a long-time friend like him feel uncomfortable.
"Aurelia, do you know what your eyes look like right now?"
Before Aurelia could answer, he provided his own. "Like you're watching a monkey."
Aurelia coughed. "Um, can you reveal who's the bottom in your relationship?"
It was just pure curiosity.
Ulysses lightly tapped her head. “Why so many questions? Curiosity might kill you."
Aurelia adjusted her bangs, genuinely curious. "When did you two become friends?"
Ulysses found a place to sit down. "It was after that misunderstanding incident."
Aurelia counted on her fingers. It hadn't been long since then; their relationship had developed rapidly. The way they talked during their chat didn't seem like they had just met; it seemed more like a couple in love.
Ulysses found her laughter unsettling. "Stop laughing. Are you coming to my place or not? Amber has prepared the ingredients and was waiting to cook."
Aurelia hesitated. "I want to continue sorting through my mom's belongings. You guys go ahead without me."
She had just returned to this house and didn't want to leave for now. Before her mother passed away, she asked Aurelia to find Samuel, and now she had discovered a clue related to him, wanting to explore further.
Ulysses sighed with disappointment. He invited many people, but none of them had time to come. Nathaniel was away on a business trip, and Amber had taken a day off. He had thought it would be a rare opportunity for Aurelia, Amber, and him to get together.
"Well, take your time sorting things out. I'll head back."
"Drive safely."
Seeing Ulysses off, Aurelia continued tidying up.
At that moment, Nathaniel called, "Aurelia, where are you?"
Aurelia perked up at the sound of his voice, sensing his mood wasn't great.
"I'm at home."
"You're at home and can't even give me a call? Your man has been out all day."
Aurelia pondered his words carefully. Was he asking her to call him?
"Didn't you tell me not to call you during the day and not to disturb your work?"
"I never said that."
Nathaniel couldn't recall saying such a thing, denying it outright. "I meant not to call me during my working hours."
"You're on a business trip for work. How would I know when you're not working?"
Nathaniel gritted his teeth, finding her increasingly sharp-tongued. He told her to avoid contact with Marcus but forgot about phone calls, a minor detail.
After a while, he noticed Aurelia's voice sounded off today, a bit hoarse as if she had been crying. When he asked where she was, she hesitated.
Nathaniel's mind shot straight to the call he got from Norman today. A knot formed in his stomach, 'That old geezer didn't get one over on you again, did he?'
"Aurelia, where are you now?"
He repeated the question.
"I'm at home."
Aurelia had a peculiar trait; whenever she told a lie, she stammered.
"Where are you? Don't make me find the answer myself."
Aurelia felt tense as if she were under the watchful gaze of this man. How did he know she was being untruthful?
"I am at the Lake Villa."
Under his imposing presence, she had no choice but to confess.
This time, Nathaniel fell silent.
After a while, he asked, "Has Oscar told you everything?"
Aurelia sat on the sofa with her phone. "Yes."
He was waiting for her to ask something, but she just replied with a simple 'Yes.' Nathaniel felt his efforts were somewhat wasted, wanting at least some emotional feedback to know she appreciated his actions.
Just saying 'Yes,' she seemed so indifferent.
Nathaniel didn't realize he was trying to please her or seeking a compliment from her, even wanting to hear something nice from her.
"Why did you buy this house?"
It took her a while to ask.
Nathaniel furrowed his brows. "The keys have already been handed to you. It is meaningless to ask why since it's not bought for my residence, isn’t it?"
Aurelia fell silent, his words were harsh, but she found them oddly pleasing. He was always like this, never expecting to hear anything nice from him.
Clearly, he was trying to coax her.
"Did you really buy it for me?"
"No, I bought it as a warehouse."
Aurelia couldn't help but chuckle. "What are you going to store in the warehouse?"
"Would you fit in there?"
"Sure."
Aurelia couldn't help but laugh softly.
Nathaniel leaned back against the headboard, with a cigarette between his fingertips, feeling a rush of excitement as he heard her soft laughter through the phone.
"Nathaniel, thank you."
Aurelia felt unusually touched by his kindness. Even the smallest gesture moved her deeply. Perhaps it was because she loved him so much.
"You don’t have to. We are a couple; just tell me if you need help. Don't make me guess."
Aurelia's mind raced. She never expected Nathaniel to stand by her side and retrieve her belongings from Chelsea.
He had bought back the villa for her. Even if it meant going behind Chelsea's back, it was enough to move Aurelia.
"I still have to thank you," she said.
"If you want to thank me, show some sincerity; actions speak louder than words; I'm not easily fooled."
Nathaniel took a drag of his cigarette, extinguishing it in the ashtray with his fingertips. He was almost begging for her sincerity like a girl.
Aurelia knew what he meant by sincerity. He simply wanted to make love with her.
"Nathaniel, when you come back, I want to discuss something with you."
She gently caressed her belly, unable to hide the truth any longer. She had decided to find the right time to talk to him. Knowing he didn't like children, she would do everything to keep the baby.
"Can't you tell me now? Why wait until I'm back?"
"It's not something I can explain over the phone."
Aurelia felt they were bound to argue about this matter, mentally preparing herself for countless scenarios to minimize the damage. She was determined to have the baby!
Nathaniel saw her reluctance to speak and didn't press further.
"Aurelia, call me honey!"
She used to call him honey sometimes, but after they signed the divorce agreement, she changed it to Nathaniel, and now hearing her call him Nathaniel again, he felt somewhat dissatisfied.
He urgently needed that sweet word to fill the emptiness in his heart.
