Chapter 161 Calling the Police
"How did someone like you come from the Heilbronn family?!" Reed spat out, and Ted quickly patted his back. "Mr. Reed Heilbronn, the doctor said you can't get worked up. Let the kids handle their own stuff."
Aurelia saw Reed's anger and her heart skipped a beat. He was just starting to get better, and this wasn't good for him.
She laughed it off, grabbed Nathaniel's hand, and put on a relaxed front. "Mr. Reed Heilbronn, we were just messing around. I wouldn't have even noticed this bruise if you hadn't pointed it out."
She shot Nathaniel a playful look. "Be gentler next time, okay?"
Nathaniel played along smoothly. "Got it. I'll be gentler."
He then tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear, trying to look affectionate.
They were terrible at pretending to be a loving couple, not realizing Reed had overheard their talk about divorce.
Feeling defeated, Reed said, "Forget it; both of you leave."
As Ted had said, young people should handle their own affairs. Interfering wasn't a long-term solution.
Marrying Aurelia off to that boy was the biggest mistake Reed had ever made.
The two were kicked out of the hospital room. Nathaniel had work to do anyway; he was just there to check on Reed.
Since Reed didn't want to see him, Nathaniel headed straight back to the office.
Aurelia wandered around the hospital's small garden, trying to clear her mind. Shortly after, Ted called and told her to go home and rest. He said Reed had calmed down and was willing to sleep, so she should go home and take care of herself.
Aurelia knew this was Reed's way of telling her to go home and rest. He was worried she hadn't been sleeping well at the hospital.
Sitting in the pavilion for a long time, Aurelia reflected on the day's events. Her mind was a mess, and she needed time to sort things out.
Thinking back to being mistreated by that jerk in the car, she felt a surge of anger. 'How dare he treat me like that?'
In the end, she took out her phone and called 911 to report the incident.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel was in a meeting with several executives, busy as ever.
Several police officers appeared at the door of the Heilbronn Group's meeting room and, after a few knocks, presented their badges.
"Who is Nathaniel Heilbronn?" one officer asked.
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. "I am. What's this about?"
The officer said, "Someone has accused you of sexual assault. Please come with us."
The entire nineteenth floor fell silent.
Nathaniel was the man all Imperick socialites dreamt of. Why would he need to resort to violence? But these were police officers, and their tone left no room for doubt.
The executives exchanged uneasy glances, none daring to speak.
The assistant following the police was close to tears, whispering apologetically, "I'm sorry, Mr. Heilbronn. I couldn't stop them."
Nathaniel pinched the bridge of his nose. Considering the events of the afternoon, he had a clue.
Aurelia had cried in the car, threatening to call the police, and now she had actually done it!
That meek little lamb had earned his respect.
Nathaniel stayed calm. "Sir, I'm quite busy. How long will this take?"
The officer, initially planning to say that Nathaniel wouldn't be holding any more meetings if it were indeed a case of sexual assault, found himself hesitating. Nathaniel's confident demeanor made the accusation seem far-fetched.
"If everything checks out, it will only take a few hours."
Nathaniel glanced at his watch. He had another transoceanic meeting soon, which seemed unlikely to happen now.
"Sir, if everything is fine, who will compensate me for my lost? As you can see, I'm very busy," Nathaniel asked.
The police officer was caught off guard; it was the first time someone had asked such a question when being detained.
"Prove that you are innocent first," the officer said. Although he was supposed to speak with a firm tone, his voice lacked the intended authority.
Nathaniel turned back to the curious executives in the room and said, "Meeting adjourned!"
He then led the way to the elevator.
For the first time in his life, he sat in a police car and was taken to the station for questioning.
The police had retrieved surveillance footage from the hospital parking lot, confirming that he had roughly pushed a beautiful woman into a car.
The inside of the car was not visible as the windows were covered with privacy film.
About fifteen minutes later, the two individuals straightened their clothes as they got out of the car.
The video paused at this point.
The police officer asked, "The lady reported an attempted sexual assault in your car. What do you have to say?"
In the small interrogation room, even Nathaniel's powerful aura was absent. Adjusting his collar, he said, "The woman in the video is my wife. Have any of you seen a young couple argue before?"
The police officers exchanged looks, momentarily unsure of the truth in his words.
Nathaniel handed over his ID, saying, "If you don't believe me, check it out. The woman who made the report is named Aurelia, and we are legally married."
One of the police officers took the ID and checked the information in the system. Within two minutes, he returned and nodded to the other officers. "They are indeed a married couple."
A senior police officer sternly warned, "Forcing anything on a spouse is also illegal. We need to bring both parties in for a confrontation. Even if you are married, it doesn't matter if it constitutes sexual assault. Everyone is equal before the law!"
With that, he instructed his assistant to bring in the woman who made the report.
Aurelia returned to the rented house, took a shower, packed some clothes in a suitcase, and prepared to move in with Reed until his recovery.
She didn't have much stuff, so packing was quick. Looking around the house, although it was comfortable, she felt lonely. She regretted renting it; she would have been better off not renting and staying in the hospital for a few more days until she completed the divorce proceedings. Then Aurelia could have left for good.
Her mother's villa would be taken care of by professionals, as she didn't want to live there; her mother's presence was everywhere.
Aurelia regretted making the call to the police; she thought it would be over after reporting it, but she didn't expect to be called in for questioning and to see him again.
She wanted to leave Nathanielforever.
Aurelia agreed to the police's request over the phone and then carried the suitcase downstairs. Her car was blocked in the parking spot and couldn't be moved. She made her way to the gate of the community and hailed a taxi.
The taxi took her directly to the police station, where she saw the anxious Zack waiting outside.
Seeing her, Zack hurried over. "Madam, Mr. Heilbronn was taken away in a meeting, accused of sexual assault. I've been following him recently; this shouldn't be happening."
Confused, Zack thought Aurelia had come to take Nathaniel home, not realizing she was the one who had made the report.
Seeing how worried he was, Aurelia couldn't bear it and reassured him, "It's okay. Don't worry."
She may have overplayed her hand.
