Chapter 285 He Is Lovesick
Nathaniel glanced down at Aurelia's bare feet and raised an eyebrow. "Aurelia, why aren't you wearing shoes? Isn't the floor cold?"
Aurelia's mouth felt dry. She licked her lips and replied, "You don't like people touching your stuff. How could I wear your shoes?"
Nathaniel chuckled bitterly, "I don't like people touching my things, but not you. Go put on some shoes; your feet shouldn't be cold."
Aurelia thought to herself, 'Now that we're divorced, why pretend to be close? When we used to share a bed, you wouldn't even let me borrow your slippers.'
She muttered under her breath and stayed put.
Nathaniel started to get anxious. He knew her well—behind that laid-back exterior was a stubborn heart. Once she made up her mind, she never budged.
"Aurelia, what are you thinking? When have I ever disliked you?" he asked.
Since he brought it up, Aurelia didn't hold back. "The first year we got married, I came out of the shower wearing your slippers. The next day, you threw them away, even though it was just a short walk from the shower to the bed."
Nathaniel was both amused and exasperated. "Aurelia, you didn't think I threw them away because you wore them, did you?"
"What else?" she shot back.
Nathaniel frowned even more. What a huge misunderstanding! "Aurelia, didn't you notice the slippers were already broken when you wore them?"
Aurelia stood there, stunned. She had never thought of that and didn't feel the slippers were problematic at the time. She just thought they didn't fit because her feet were small. So it was a misunderstanding.
Aurelia awkwardly tidied her hair. The matter was cleared up, but she didn't want to admit she had misunderstood him. "I didn't notice. They seemed fine to me."
Nathaniel couldn't understand her embarrassment. He thought she didn't believe him. "Aurelia, those slippers were really broken. If you don't believe me, I can call Betty. She knows about it; she took out the trash."
Aurelia rolled her eyes. "Why call her? It's so late."
Nathaniel was still a bit anxious, afraid she would continue to misunderstand. "So, do you believe me now?"
Aurelia didn't want to continue the conversation. This guy's emotional intelligence was non-existent. "Stop talking and save your strength. I'll have Zack call the family doctor."
Nathaniel said weakly, "Aurelia, stay and chat with me a bit longer. If you have any other misunderstandings about me, let's clear them up all at once."
Aurelia ignored him and walked out the door. "Zack, do you have the family doctor's contact information?"
Zack nodded, thinking, 'Another game interrupted. If I get reported again, my ranking points will drop to zero.'
"Mr. Heilbronn doesn't want to go to the hospital. He's having a severe allergic reaction. Call the family doctor now and have him come over," Aurelia added.
Zack didn't dare delay Aurelia's order and immediately exited the game to make the call.
Aurelia saw the slippers Zack had taken out by the door, walked over, put them on, and felt they were indeed different from the last time she wore his shoes.
She went to the kitchen and saw that all the utensils were brand new, with no signs of use. The fridge had only a few eggs and the rest was water. The house was so clean that even a mouse would starve. She wondered how he managed to survive.
Aurelia rummaged through the cabinets and finally found a pack of udon noodles that hadn't expired. She lingered, gazing at the familiar packaging. It was her favorite brand from the past, always a staple in her home.
Back then, he couldn't stand it when Betty made noodles in the morning. He was all about sandwiches and milk.
Aurelia snapped back to reality, tossed the noodles in the pot, and cracked an egg. With the limited ingredients in his house, she made do. She figured the family doctor would probably prescribe some meds, and taking them on an empty stomach wouldn't be great. So, she cooked the noodles for him. Whether he ate them or not was his call.
In no time, a steaming bowl of noodles was ready.
Aurelia brought the noodles back to the bedroom and placed them on his nightstand.
Nathaniel noticed she was wearing shoes now, which eased his frustration. The familiar smell of the noodles lifted his spirits. "Aurelia, it's been a long time since I had your cooking."
Aurelia let out a cold laugh. "You never liked it. This is all your house has. Eat it if you want; if not, I'll throw it out for the dogs tomorrow."
Nathaniel felt a bit hurt. His wife had finally cooked him a bowl of noodles, and now she was saying it was for the dogs!
He quickly sat up from under the covers. "I'll eat it. Aurelia, I didn't like it before. Over the past four years, I've tried to get used to your taste. Now I think noodles are better than sandwiches."
With that, he started eating the noodles in big mouthfuls.
Aurelia watched him quietly. "I had Zack call the family doctor. If you keep toughing it out without going to the hospital and die tomorrow, I'll be the prime suspect. I don't want to be taken away by the police."
Nathaniel choked on the noodles, looked up at her, and couldn't help but laugh. Even with his low emotional intelligence, he could sense the underlying concern in her harsh words. "Aurelia, do I have to finish it all?"
Aurelia had made a large bowl of noodles. His appetite wasn't the same as usual, and he couldn't finish such a big bowl.
"Do as you like. Whatever's left, Zack can throw out for the dogs tomorrow."
Nathaniel remained silent.
Aurelia continued, "Take out the medicine you've been taking and show it to the family doctor. Find out exactly what you're allergic to. If you take the wrong medicine, it troubles others. Zack and the family doctor both have families. They can't be working late at night. Have you thought about their feelings?"
Nathaniel remained silent, not daring to argue. "I'll give them a raise tomorrow."
At this moment, Zack was playing a game in the living room. Hearing Nathaniel's words, his ears perked up, and he thought, 'thank you, Mrs. Heilbronn! Indeed, getting a raise depended on her.'
The doorbell rang, and Zack got up to answer it.
Dr. Carter hurried in with his medical bag. "Where's Mr. Heilbronn?"
Zack pointed to the bedroom. "In the room, he's got a fever."
Dr. Carter put on shoe covers and walked briskly to the room, seeing Aurelia standing there while Nathaniel leaned against the headboard, looking blissful.
Dr. Carter thought, 'is he feverish or just lovesick?'
"Mr. Heilbronn, where are you feeling unwell?"
Aurelia stepped aside. She had been with the Heilbronn family for three years and naturally recognized Dr. Carter. "Dr. Carter, sorry to trouble you so late. Mr. Heilbronn drank alcohol and took some medicine. Now he's having an allergic reaction, with a fever and a rash."
Dr. Carter put down his medical bag. "What medicine did you take? Show it to me."
This question made Nathaniel uneasy. The medicine he took was known only to himself, Zack, and his psychiatrist. He had been hiding his depression for years. If the company's board found out how serious his condition was, who knew what kind of trouble it would cause. And he didn't want her to know that he had depression.
