Chapter 1025 Without You, I Can't Sleep

"That depends on what Kelvin decides to do," Brandon said.

"You seem pretty sure Mr. Davis won't come back to the hospital. But what if he decides to go for treatment?" the detective asked, curious.

Brandon countered, "Did you see him toss something earlier?"

"Yeah."

"Do you know what it was?"

"Medicine?" the detective replied. "Looked like a pill bottle."

Brandon smiled smugly. "Do you think someone who's ready to fight cancer would throw away their meds?"

Know your enemy, and you could win battles.

Brandon knew Kelvin all too well.

Given Kelvin's personality, upon learning he had cancer, he would likely choose to hide it and act as if nothing had happened.

First, to prevent any turmoil within the Davis Group.

Second, to avoid causing Penelope distress, especially with two kids to consider.

Brandon thought about how he had schemed and plotted tirelessly to drive a wedge between Kelvin and Penelope, but had failed every time.

Their trust in each other was rock solid.

Impossible to shake.

Since outsiders couldn't separate them, Brandon had to create internal conflict.

The intimate photos hadn't caused a fight, the night at the hotel hadn't stirred any trouble, but what about lung cancer?

Would Kelvin choose to leave Penelope on his own?

After all, he loved Penelope deeply and wouldn't want her to become a widow, left to manage the Davis family estate alone.

Someone who believes they are dying would surely entrust their most precious things to someone else for safekeeping, to die in peace.

Kelvin would entrust Penelope to Brandon's care.

King Manor.

The clock struck nine.

"Sam, Lucy," Penelope called out, "time for bed."

"Okay, Mommy."

Lucy responded promptly, without any hesitation.

Sam glanced at the time and looked around.

"Where's Dad?" he asked. "Why isn't he home tonight?"

Penelope replied, "Missing him already? You usually ignore him and complain about him, but now that he's been gone for one night, you're looking for him?"

"I'm not looking for him; I'm keeping an eye on him for you."

"For me?"

"Dad's handsome, rich, smart, and charming. Lots of women must be after him," Sam said seriously. "You need to keep a close watch on him and not let other women get their way."

Penelope laughed. "So you're saying Dad didn't come home tonight because he might be with another woman?"

"Not necessarily, but a man staying out late is the start of trouble!"

Penelope tapped his forehead. "You don't trust your dad's character?"

"Whether I trust him or not isn't important. What's important is, do you trust your dear husband?"

"Of course I do."

Sam pouted. "Mom, don't trust anyone too much, and don't be overconfident."

"Alright, enough nonsense," Penelope said. "Your dad is working late at the office, very busy. He'll be home later."

She wasn't worried at all.

Her relationship with Kelvin had been through many tests, and so many that their trust was rock-solid.

Besides, Kelvin was either at the office or at home, and when he was home, he stuck to her like glue, calling her "darling" and being devoted to her.

A man like Kelvin wouldn't be with another woman.

Sam was just being a kid, talking nonsense.

"You don't understand men," Sam shook his head. "Mom, you need to stay alert and not get too comfortable."

"Go on, hurry up and get ready for bed."

After settling the kids, it was already past ten.

Penelope returned to the master bedroom.

Looking at the neatly made bed, she felt a strange sense of loneliness.

Kelvin hadn't stayed out this late in a long time. He usually left work on time and did any work he could from home.

He was deeply devoted to his family and wanted to spend his free time with her.

Tonight must be really important at the office.

Penelope lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

She was used to Kelvin holding her as she fell asleep.

Thinking about it, Penelope picked up her phone and sent him a message—

"Still busy? It's really late."

After sending the message, she waited, hoping to receive a reply before going to sleep.

Because if he saw the message, he would definitely reply.

But... half an hour passed, and her phone remained silent.

Penelope felt uneasy, like a weight was pressing on her chest.

What was Kelvin so busy with? Why hadn't he replied?

Hadn't he checked his phone?

Impossible! This had never happened before!

Something unusual must be going on. Penelope's heart raced, but she tried to suppress her wild thoughts.

Maybe tonight's work was really urgent and important, so he didn't have time to check his phone. He never worked late at night, so tonight must be an exception.

Penelope kept reassuring herself as she tried to sleep.

But she couldn't. As midnight approached, she was wide awake.

Should she go to the Davis Group?

Or call Timothy or Ryan to ask?

Just as Penelope was about to pick up her phone, a video call came through.

It was Kelvin!

She answered immediately. "Honey, are you still busy?"

On the screen, Kelvin's handsome face looked as usual, but with a hint of fatigue.

He was still in his office; Penelope recognized the background.

"Just finished the meeting," Kelvin said. "I just saw your message. You haven't slept?"

"Can't sleep without you."

Kelvin's expression softened, and he smiled. "You're a mature woman, Penelope. You know Lucy can sleep alone."

Penelope's heart skipped a beat.

"You didn't say that before," she said, feeling a bit hurt. "Do you remember what you used to say?"

He smiled again. "Of course I remember. I said I wanted to spoil you like a child, so you could rely on me for everything."

"Well, you succeeded." Penelope sniffled. "Kelvin, I really can't sleep without you."

Her voice was soft and nasal.

Kelvin's heart melted.

What would he do... his Penelope.

She needed him to sleep now. What would she do when he was gone?
