Chapter 1058 High Fever!

"Is it morning already?" Penelope yawned, rolling over and squinting at the clock. "Guess it is."

She rubbed her eyes and sat up, still groggy and not fully awake.

For the first time since Kelvin had his way with her the night before, the alarm clock rang right on time.

He didn't turn it off or change the time!

Penelope felt a bit surprised and puzzled. "Why didn't you let me sleep in today?"

"...I forgot."

Penelope laughed and playfully punched his chest.

Kelvin headed to the walk-in closet while she went to freshen up.

After getting ready, she walked out of the master bedroom just as Lucy opened her door and came out.

"Morning, Mom and Dad!" Lucy said sweetly. "What a coincidence, we're all coming out at the same time!"

Penelope walked over and kissed Lucy. "Did you sleep well last night?"

"Very well!"

"What about Sam?" Penelope asked. "Is he still in his room, or has he gone downstairs already?"

"I don't know."

Ruby, who was nearby, answered, "Sam hasn't come out yet. Not sure what he's up to in there. Usually, he's quicker than Lucy."

Since Lucy was a girl, she needed to pick out clothes and do her hair, but Sam didn't have to.

Boys, you knew, just washed their faces and they were good to go!

"I'll go check on him," Penelope said. "He wouldn't have overslept, would he?"

But that seemed unlikely. Sam was a lot like Kelvin in that regard—he woke up on time, was a light sleeper, and had a very regular routine.

"Sam? Sam?" Penelope knocked on the door. "Are you ready? I'm coming in."

There was no response.

What's going on?

"Sam? Did you hear me?" Penelope knocked again. "Answer me, what are you doing in there? Hurry up and come down for breakfast, or you'll be late for school!"

Still, there was only silence.

Penelope looked at Kelvin, her expression worried.

This was very unusual.

Sam never stayed silent like this. Could something have happened to him?

Kelvin strode over and turned the doorknob. "Let's go in and check."

He sensed something was wrong, too, but the more critical the situation, the calmer he needed to be.

If he panicked, Penelope would only get more anxious!

Kelvin was the head of the family; he couldn't lose his cool!

Fortunately, the door wasn't locked, and Kelvin and Penelope quickly and easily went inside.

The bedroom was quiet.

"Sam? Sam?"

Penelope finally saw Sam lying in bed, his face flushed, eyes closed, looking very uncomfortable.

She rushed over and, even before touching his face, could feel the heat radiating from him.

He had a fever!

And it was a high fever!

Ruby exclaimed, "What on earth happened? How did he get such a high fever? Last night when I put Sam to bed, he was perfectly fine, bouncing around without a care!"

Penelope held Sam in her arms, pressing her cheek to his forehead.

"High fever. Quick," Penelope said. "Ruby, do we have any fever patches at home?"

"Yes, we do."

"Bring one over." Penelope looked at Kelvin. "We need to get ready to go to the hospital."

Despite her panic, she quickly made all the necessary preparations.

Sam, feeling groggy, tried to open his eyes but was too uncomfortable. He could only mumble softly, "Mom..."

"I'm here, I'm here," Penelope said softly. "It's okay, don't be scared. We're taking you to the hospital, and you'll feel better after some medicine."

Ruby brought the fever patch and placed it on Sam's forehead.

"It's all my fault," Ruby said, heartbroken to see Sam like this. "I usually check on Sam in the middle of the night. But last night, I slept too deeply and didn't check on him, and now this happened..."

Ruby wiped her eyes.

"It's not your fault," Penelope reassured her. "It's okay. Sam probably just caught a cold."

She held Sam and quickly headed out.

After a few steps, Kelvin intercepted her. "Can you carry him? Let me."

He easily took Sam from her arms and walked briskly outside, not forgetting to say, "Penelope, follow me."

Penelope paused.

Right, with Kelvin here, she could let him carry the child.

Back in the small town, whenever Lucy got sick, it was always Penelope who carried her to the clinic or hospital, with Ruby helping out at most.

Lucy had a weak constitution and got sick frequently, often being ill for several days at a time, and Penelope had always been the one to take care of her.

Now... she had Kelvin.

She didn't have to face it alone.

Her heart felt warm.

"Mom," Lucy asked worriedly, "what's wrong with Sam? Is it serious?"

"Sam probably has a cold. It's okay." Penelope bent down and patted her head. "Be good and eat your breakfast, then let the driver take you to preschool. Sam needs to go to the hospital today."

"Okay, I'll tell the teacher."

"Good girl."

After reassuring Lucy, Penelope got into the car to head to the hospital.

Sam, with the fever patch on his forehead, lay in Kelvin's arms the whole time.

Kelvin's tall frame made Sam look so small.

Penelope kept checking Sam's temperature, holding his hand tightly with her other hand.

Whenever Sam whimpered, she squeezed his hand. "It's okay, Mom's here, and Dad's here too."

Hearing her gentle voice, Sam would calm down.

Kelvin watched this scene.

"Penelope, I thought you..." he sighed. "Would be very anxious and flustered, not knowing what to do. But I didn't expect you to be more composed than me."

"Because I have experience."

"Experience?"

"Yes," Penelope nodded. "You forget, I raised two kids by myself in the small town."

Kelvin was taken aback.

Penelope reminisced, her words flowing more freely. "Lucy was weak, probably because I didn't take good care of myself during pregnancy, so her immune system was very poor. She got sick frequently, had fevers, needed transfusions, injections, and medicine."

"I remember many dinners were eaten at the clinic. Ruby would make food and bring it to me with Sam."

"At the time, I thought Lucy's illnesses were just normal childhood sicknesses, but they got worse and worse until she was diagnosed with leukemia."

"Thankfully... Lucy's illness is cured now, and she's very healthy." Penelope's gaze fell on Sam. "But him, he's always been energetic and healthy. Even if he caught a cold, a little runny nose, and some hot water would fix it. I never expected him to have such a high fever this time."

Kelvin listened quietly, feeling a mix of emotions he couldn't describe.
