Chapter 901 The Naming Rights of a Star
"What are you staring at?" Sam said, sounding all cool and indifferent. "You're in my way, and now you're blaming me? What if I'm late? You gonna take the heat for that?"
Kelvin glanced around at the wide-open space around them.
Sam didn't budge.
"Sam," Lucy had already moved to the side, "you can walk over here too. Why do you have to walk between Dad and Mom?"
"Because I want to!"
With that, Sam squeezed himself between Kelvin and Penelope.
Penelope grabbed his collar and pulled him back.
"What are you doing?" Sam struggled. "I need to get to the car for preschool!"
Penelope knelt at his eye level. "What's with the attitude? Who got you all riled up?"
Sam shot her a look. "You know why!"
"It's because you officially changed your last name to Davis, right?"
"Why does one of us have to take your last name and the other Kelvin's? Why can't we both have your last name?"
"You could've said no," Penelope replied. "Sam, no one made you do this."
He pouted and turned his head away.
No one had forced him!
But he was annoyed. He had lost to Lucy and had to take the last name Davis!
He could have chosen to be called Sam or Sam, but Lucy had won the right to choose first!
"You lost at rock-paper-scissors, so you can only blame yourself. It has nothing to do with anyone else," Penelope said, patting his head. "Besides, Sam is a great name. You're my precious son."
Sam remained sulky.
Penelope gave Kelvin a look.
Signaled him to cheer Sam up. Kelvin flicked Sam's forehead. "Sam."
No response.
"Having my last name comes with a lot of perks."
Still no response.
"For example," Kelvin said slowly, "you could have the naming rights to a star in the sky."
Sam had been determined not to be swayed by any of Kelvin's offers, maintaining his cool, indifferent expression. But this was unexpected!
Kelvin had hit the nail on the head!
"The naming rights to a star?" Sam's eyes lit up. "I can have my star and name it?"
Kelvin nodded. "Yes. And we can install a telescope on the roof of The King Manor so you can see it whenever you want."
That did it!
Sam's biggest interest was astronomy and space, and Kelvin could fulfill all his dreams in that area!
The naming rights to a star!
Who could resist that?
Even Penelope was surprised. "Really? Kelvin, don't make promises you can't keep. If you promise something to a child, you have to follow through."
"When have I ever broken a promise?"
Penelope was about to say something when Sam suddenly raised his little hand, turning her face to look at him.
"Mom," he said seriously.
"What's up?"
Penelope rarely saw him like this and was puzzled.
What was he going to say?
"Say my name," Sam demanded. "Loud and clear, so everyone can hear!"
Penelope was taken aback.
"Come on, hurry up."
"Sam Davis, can you act normal?"
Sam nodded, satisfied. "Good, keep going."
"Sam Davis!"
"Yes, just like that," he said. "Mom, remember, don't mess it up. My name is Sam Davis, and I'm Kelvin Davis's son!"
He nodded to himself, then looked at Kelvin and waved. "Bye, I'm off to preschool. You guys carry on. I didn't see or do anything just now."
Penelope couldn't help but laugh.
"Kelvin, you might have overdone it," she said. "If you can't deliver, he'll hold a grudge."
"There's nothing I can't deliver. Penelope, I suddenly think there should be a star to witness our love."
Always hanging high in the sky, always shining, always brilliant.
Always there.
"What?" Penelope blinked, not quite understanding.
"Vesper Davis," Kelvin said. "How does that name sound?"
Penelope still looked puzzled.
She thought it was just a way to placate Sam, but when Kelvin said "Vesper Davis," her heart skipped a beat.
It sounded pretty good!
Kelvin raised an eyebrow. "Doesn't it sound nice?"
"No,"
"Then I'll think of another one."
"No," Penelope said, "it sounds great."
"Then it's settled."
He looked thoughtful as if considering which asteroid to name "Vesper Davis."
Penelope asked quietly, "Can you have the naming rights to a star?"
"Yes."
There were many asteroids in the universe, and scientists had named them.
But some newly discovered ones hadn't been named yet, and their naming rights could be auctioned off.
The highest bidder got the naming rights and could name the star whatever they wanted, recognized worldwide.
When someone looked at that star through a telescope, they would know its name.
With Kelvin's immense wealth, buying the naming rights to an asteroid was easy.
He just hadn't thought about it before.
He didn't see the point or the necessity.
Looking up at the starry sky, so many stars twinkling, always visible, didn't seem special.
But now it was different.
Kelvin thought that every time he looked up at the night sky and saw that fixed asteroid, knowing it was their "Vesper Davis," his heart would soften.
A star named after their love.
How romantic.
Loving someone meant bringing the best and most eternal things to her.
Loving someone meant willingly creating the romance you once scoffed at.
Penelope's eyes sparkled like stars in the night sky.
"Isn't this how you bribed Sam?" she whispered. "Now you're using it to bribe me."
"It's not a bribe, it's a gift. I think you should have a star too."
"I'm not a child."
"In my heart, you are," Kelvin said, ruffling her hair. "Forever young, always needing me."
