Chapter 1090 Tell Me, Who Are You Really With?
Penelope sat quietly on the side, not saying a word.
Soon, the video call connected, and Lucy's voice was the first to come through: "Daddy!"
"Hey, Lucy! It's me," Kelvin's heart melted instantly upon hearing Lucy's voice. "Do you miss Daddy?"
"Yeah, I miss you every day, in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night!"
"Daddy misses you too."
Lucy asked, "Daddy, why are you on a business trip for so long? Can you come back sooner?"
Kelvin, "Do you want me to come back sooner?"
"Of course I do," Lucy said. "I want Daddy to hug me."
Kelvin's lips curled into a gentle smile, his eyes full of tenderness.
"Alright," Kelvin replied, "I'll try to finish my work early and come home to be with my Lucy."
"You need to be with Mommy, too," Lucy said. "She sleeps alone, and it's so lonely and scary for her. She won't even let Sam and me sleep with her."
Kelvin couldn't help but laugh out loud. "It's you two who want to sleep with her, isn't it?"
Back in the day, Kelvin had to outsmart Sam and Lucy to win the "right to sleep" with Penelope.
The kids definitely wanted to sleep with their parents, but Kelvin didn't want them interfering between him and Penelope!
How could they cuddle, kiss, and maybe even have another baby if the kids were there?
Thinking about having another baby now just filled him with a sense of heartache.
"No," Lucy denied, "I really want to be with Mommy. It's winter, and it's so cold at night. The wind howls outside, and the big trees sway. It's so scary, it feels like it could blow people away."
Kelvin replied, "Then, in the future, when it's windy in winter, you can take your little pillow and go sleep with Mommy, okay?"
"Okay!"
Penelope listened quietly on the side, not daring to speak, afraid that Sam and Lucy would discover her and expose Kelvin's lie about being on a business trip.
She didn't need Lucy to keep her company!
Sam and Lucy should sleep on their own! They shouldn't develop a habit of relying on their parents!
Besides, she had Kelvin.
What was going on? He used to hate it when Sam and Lucy came to the master bedroom, and now he was telling Lucy to sleep with her!
Unable to speak, Penelope could only protest with her eyes.
Unfortunately, Kelvin was focused on the phone screen, chatting softly with Lucy, not even glancing at her!
Lucy happily said, "I'll sleep in the middle with my little pillow, Daddy on the left, and Mommy on the right. So happy!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Sam's head popped into view.
The warm father-daughter conversation instantly changed.
"Dad," Sam said, "why are you holding the phone so close to your face? Move it back a bit, your face is taking up the whole screen!"
Kelvin fell silent.
He was trying to hide the hospital environment!
Sam always knew how to hit the nail on the head!
"Come on, come on," Sam urged, "it makes your face look big and not handsome at all."
Lucy: "Daddy is still handsome."
"He'd be even more handsome if he moved it back!"
Kelvin replied, "What's the point of being handsome on a video call? Sam, you have too many demands!"
"How is that too many demands?" Sam said confidently. "Alright, fine, whatever. But show me your surroundings."
"What do you want to see?"
"To see if you're really alone in the hotel," Sam said. "To see what the hotel looks like."
Penelope's heart tightened.
Why was Sam making such a request? How would they handle this?
"Of course, I'm alone in the hotel," Kelvin said without changing his expression. "How could there be anyone else?"
"Show me then."
"No."
Sam immediately said, "You just need to turn the phone around and let me see. You actually refuse such a simple request! Kelvin, something's off with you!"
Penelope was scared out of her wits, not knowing what to do.
Fortunately, Kelvin remained calm. "What's off with me?"
"There's definitely someone next to you!" Sam said. "Or you're not even in a hotel!"
Bingo.
Sam had guessed it all.
Sam was too smart... which wasn't always a good thing!
"Isn't that right?" Sam asked. "Otherwise, you would've shown me already! Kelvin, where are you really? Or who are you with?"
Even the wise and experienced Kelvin had no way out in front of Sam at this moment.
Sam's guess was spot on, and Kelvin was helpless.
The more he dodged, the more suspicious Sam would become.
But... he couldn't reveal the truth!
"Kelvin," Sam clicked his tongue, "you better give me an explanation, or I'll tell Mom! Not just that, I'll go to Grandpa, and Grandma too..."
Kelvin, "Stop."
"Fine, I won't say anything, but you, right now, turn your phone and show me your surroundings!"
Lucy had gone quiet, sitting there with only half her body visible, her eyes darting around.
She also thought Sam made sense.
Otherwise, she would've already spoken up to refute Sam.
Sometimes they bickered, each holding their own opinion, and sometimes they were unusually united!
Kelvin pursed his lips and looked at Penelope.
What should they do?
He was out of ideas too.
"Kelvin!" Sam shouted, "It seems there's really someone next to you because you're looking at her! I noticed! It's definitely true!"
"Is it a man or a woman?"
"It's a woman, right? If it were a man, you would've shown me already!"
"I knew it, with all the overtime and business trips lately, something's definitely up!"
"Mom didn't believe me and even pulled my ear, so I couldn't say anything!"
Lucy quickly moved closer.
The two little heads squeezed together, staring at Kelvin.
Kelvin was completely at a loss.
No matter how capable he was, he couldn't handle Sam and Lucy!
At that moment...
Penelope took the phone.
"There is a woman next to him, but that woman is me," Penelope said. "It's late, why aren't you two getting ready for bed? Why are you still in the playroom?"
This time, her face filled the entire screen.
Kelvin was stunned.
Sam and Lucy exclaimed in unison, "It's you!!!"
Their voices were so high-pitched and loud that Penelope felt her ears were about to go deaf.
"Yes, it's me." Penelope nodded. "Sam, do you have any more questions?"
Sam's eyes widened. "How can it be you? Why is it you?"
"Why can't it be me? Why shouldn't it be me?"
