Chapter 1051 At the Critical Moment, Still Have to Rely on My Dear
To her surprise, there he was again, standing right in front of her.
Penelope looked up, puzzled.
One glance, and she almost lost her balance in shock.
That familiar face, that tall frame, the perfectly pressed suit... it was Kelvin!
Penelope swallowed hard. "What a coincidence! What are you doing here?"
She quickly linked her arm through Kelvin's.
At the same time, she thought to herself... The bookstore is quite a distance away. He shouldn't have noticed, right?
Whatever, as long as Kelvin doesn't bring it up, she won't either! Play dumb!
"Why aren't you in your office at this hour, darling?" Penelope asked. "I thought I was seeing things."
Kelvin looked at her. "I should be asking you that. Why aren't you in the jewelry department? What are you doing out here?"
"I... I needed some fresh air!"
"Fresh air?"
"Yeah, a walk to clear my head and get some inspiration!" Penelope started to ramble. "You wouldn't understand since you don't draw design sketches. When you're stuck, a walk can really help clear your mind!"
Kelvin drawled, "Is that so?"
"Yes, yes, yes!"
Kelvin looked at her with a half-smile.
Penelope's heart skipped a beat.
Could it be... he saw?
But how could he see inside the bookstore from here? From this spot, you could barely see the bookstore sign!
Penelope decided to hold on to a sliver of hope.
"Now that I've had some fresh air, my mind is much clearer. I can get back to work and create some amazing designs." Penelope rubbed her head against his arm. "Let's go home together!"
"Home?"
Penelope quickly corrected herself, "I mean, back to the office. I misspoke."
"Didn't you say the fresh air cleared your mind?" Kelvin retorted. "How can you mix up home and the office?"
"It becomes customary, since we always go home together."
Kelvin continued to look at her without saying anything, not exposing her lie.
Penelope felt a wave of anxiety.
Maybe... she should just come clean?
Kelvin wasn't just anyone. She couldn't forget that, despite his gentle demeanor with her, he was a decisive and formidable person!
"Alright." Penelope lowered her head, dropping her playful act. "You know everything, don't you?"
"What do you think?"
"How did you find out?"
She was genuinely curious.
She had deleted all traces of her meeting with Brandon immediately after setting it up. She had even waited until Kelvin left before sneaking out of the jewelry department.
How did Kelvin still know her every move?
Penelope couldn't figure it out.
Could it be...
"Did Tina rat me out?" she asked. "She's always so scared of you. The moment you give her a stern look, she spills everything, right?"
Tina's courage was so lacking!
Why couldn't she be more like Monica, who could engage Kelvin in direct confrontation with unwavering resolve?
Kelvin flicked her forehead. "So you had an accomplice, huh?"
She quickly covered her forehead. "You hit me."
From his tone, it seemed Tina was innocent.
As she was thinking, Kelvin explained calmly, "Penelope, I know you too well. Ever since Thessaly left last night, you've been acting strange, distracted. I knew something was up."
With a bit of thought, he could guess what she was up to.
If he went to confront Brandon, it would likely end in a fierce showdown.
Penelope wanted to resolve things as peacefully as possible.
Penelope confessed, "Alright... yes, I just met with Brandon. You saw, didn't you?"
"Yeah."
"But I didn't succeed in getting the photos." Penelope's head drooped, feeling powerless and guilty. "Brandon didn't hand them over. He even made demands... Kelvin, I feel so useless."
She wanted to help Thessaly, to make amends.
But things didn't go as smoothly as she had hoped.
"Brandon isn't the same person he used to be. He won't easily give up his only leverage," Kelvin replied. "He might even be hoping to stir up more trouble with those photos."
Penelope was alarmed. "What else does he want to do!?"
"No one knows. We'll have to take it one step at a time."
"If he dares to hurt Thessaly again, I'll fight him to the end! I swear!"
Kelvin pinched her cheek. "Stop talking about fighting and dying. It's bad luck."
Penelope pouted. "You care about that? I thought you were a complete atheist, not superstitious at all."
"I want you to live a long, healthy life, Penelope."
She sighed.
Kelvin's words couldn't comfort her now. Her mind was consumed with thoughts of those photos. If they got out... she couldn't even imagine the consequences!
"Kelvin, what do you think... what would make Brandon hand over the photos?" She looked up at him. "You're so smart, help me think of a way!"
In critical moments, she had to rely on her dear Kelvin.
Her dear Kelvin was much more clever than she was!
"Now you realize it's difficult?" Kelvin asked. "And you still went to see Brandon on your own?"
Penelope shook her head.
"Do you know how worried I was? But I couldn't stop you, because if I did, you'd just try again. Penelope, you have to try things yourself to learn."
"I was scared Brandon might do something to me..." Penelope mumbled. "So I didn't drink anything! I didn't touch anything! I wouldn't give him any chance!"
Kelvin raised his hand, about to flick her forehead again.
Penelope quickly closed her eyes, looking scared but not daring to resist.
His heart softened instantly. How could he bear to do it?
"Brandon won't easily post the photos online for now, because they're his leverage. He won't play that card so easily," Kelvin said. "If he does, it means... the photos aren't his final card."
Penelope was shocked. "He has a real final card?"
"Not sure. Maybe, maybe it's just my guess. Penelope, Brandon is very cunning and sinister. We need to be extra cautious."
She nodded.
Kelvin turned, leading her back towards the Davis Group.
"What did Brandon say to you?"
"He said he would give me the photos if Thessaly drops the lawsuit, lets Paul off, and keeps things quiet," Penelope replied. "I... didn't agree to it."
