Chapter 810 Have You Had Enough Sweetness?
Kelvin asked, "Don't you wanna hear me say it?"
"No."
"Hmm?"
"Not right now," Penelope replied. "Maybe later. Besides, I never made you say it."
Kelvin pressed his lips together. "Then we'll just wait it out until you do."
"Kelvin!"
He was always one to follow through on his words. He would definitely stand his ground here!
What to do!
Penelope could only whisper, almost inaudibly, "I... love you."
As soon as the words left her mouth, she heard Kelvin's response, "Penelope, I love you too."
In that moment, her heart raced.
'So this is what it feels like to be loved back!'
Kelvin had insisted she say it just so he could respond!
Penelope's smile was radiant.
She looked up at him, and he was looking right back at her.
In each other's eyes, they saw their reflections.
"How much longer are you two gonna be like this? Haven't you had enough?" Sam's voice broke in. "If you have time, could you help me start the next episode? I've watched this one three times already just to avoid interrupting you!"
Being their son was exhausting.
Since Kelvin and Mom were getting along so well, he decided not to interfere. He'd give them their private time to talk and bond.
But seriously, their relationship was too good!
It had been almost an hour, and they showed no signs of stopping!
And the atmosphere was getting more intense!
Sam really didn't want to watch the episode a fourth time, so he finally spoke up!
Penelope buried her face in Kelvin's chest.
She was too embarrassed to face her son.
Kelvin, unfazed, got up and started the next episode.
"Why doesn't it auto-play the next one?"
"Why don't you ask it?" Sam replied. "How should I know?"
If he could move, he would have started it himself and avoided watching the same episode three times!
Kelvin smirked. "You've really had it tough."
"Glad you understand," Sam said. "Remember to make it up to my young heart."
He continued watching his cartoon.
Kelvin took out a pair of headphones and was ready to put them on Sam.
Sam resisted. "What are you doing?"
"Putting on headphones for you. Got a problem with that?"
"I don't want them. They're uncomfortable."
Kelvin insisted, "So you don't eavesdrop."
Sam protested loudly, "I already heard everything! I didn't interrupt or say anything, and now you're punishing me? I won't wear them!"
"You heard everything?"
"Yeah, you were jealous of Uncle Brandon and some other guy named Nathan, who I don't even know," Sam blurted out. "Isn't that right?"
Sam's ears were sharp.
Even from a distance, while watching cartoons, he had heard everything clearly!
Kelvin didn't respond.
Sam continued, "I can't believe Mom once told you she liked Uncle Brandon. If I had known earlier..."
"What would you have done?"
He would have told Brandon and tried to set him up with Mom!
Maybe they would have ended up together! Kelvin wouldn't even be in the picture!
Suddenly, Penelope, who had been silent on the couch, started coughing violently.
The whole room echoed with her coughs!
She couldn't let Sam answer that!
She was so close to making things right with Kelvin; she couldn't let it fall apart now!
Penelope's frantic coughing was a clear signal to Sam to drop the subject. He sighed and said, "Nothing much. I'll just keep watching my cartoon."
Kelvin couldn't miss the hint.
Something was up!
"Afraid to say?" Kelvin taunted. "Sam, you're not as brave as I thought."
But Sam wasn't falling for it!
He grinned. "Kelvin, that trick won't work on me. I'm just looking out for my dear mom. I'm disappointed! She said she liked Uncle Brandon, so what? It was just something she said in anger, but it was also the truth!"
"It was my anger that did the talking!" Penelope quickly corrected. "Not the truth."
"Fine, fine, anger," Sam conceded. "But you said it because Kelvin upset you! Kelvin, as a man, you should reflect on your actions and not blame my dear mom!"
"Think about what you said or did to upset her so much that she said she loved Uncle Brandon. OK? Show some responsibility and a big heart, will you?"
"And," Sam turned to Penelope, "can you stand up for yourself a bit? Show some of your old spirit in front of Kelvin? You were the one who walked away from him without looking back! How come you don't have that courage anymore?"
"Don't let yourself go backward!"
Penelope felt a surge of motivation from Sam's words.
Yes, he was right. Kelvin had messed up first, which made her want to leave, to divorce, and to say she loved Brandon out of spite!
How did it turn into her admitting fault?
"Exactly!" Penelope stood up abruptly. "Kelvin, why are you always so overbearing? You made me lose hope for the future, you made me lose faith, and that's why I was determined to divorce and said I loved another man!"
She stood with her hands on her hips, head held high.
She was taking back control!
She wouldn't let Kelvin dominate her anymore, wouldn't fall into his traps!
"That's right," Sam finally looked satisfied. "That's the mom I know!"
Kelvin put the headphones on Sam and turned to face Penelope.
"Feeling strong now?" he asked. "Hmm?"
"Sam's right. You made the first mistake, and I spoke in anger afterward. I can admit my fault and apologize, but first, you need to admit yours!"
Kelvin's overbearing nature and selfishness had made her feel he would take the kids away, that he would hurt her again, so she wanted to escape, to reject his love.
Back then, Penelope wanted a divorce, to cut ties with Kelvin, to be free of him.
But she never thought about being with Brandon after the divorce.
She just wanted her freedom back.
"Penelope," Kelvin looked at her, "from the moment you showed up with Lucy, I never thought about forcing you to stay. I was scared, scared you'd leave me again in some extreme way."
"But I didn't know that."
"I told you, emphasized it, promised it. You just didn't believe me."
Penelope's resolve remained strong. "If you had shown me enough, given me enough security, would I have doubted you?"
Old habits die hard.
