Chapter 29
"What's the deal with this bracelet?" Fiona asked, looking puzzled. "Why does everyone want it so bad?"
Kelvin turned to her, "Do you want it?"
Fiona wasn't into diamonds; she liked crystal and gold more. But if Penelope wanted it so much, she had to have it.
"Yes!" Fiona said, "Mr. Davis, buy it for me!"
Kelvin smirked and raised his paddle. "$1.4 million."
The price shot up, and the crowd buzzed.
"Mr. Davis is bidding too?"
"What's so special about this bracelet?"
"Who'd dare compete with Mr. Davis? They must be nuts!"
"This diamond's worth, at most, $700,000."
Kelvin's face stayed cool, not giving anything away. But he was set on getting that bracelet.
"$1.4 million," the host said, clearly surprised. "Mr. Davis has bid $1.4 million."
Penelope felt a wave of despair. Kelvin had made his move. He never missed what he aimed for.
Was he buying it for Fiona?
Penelope couldn't let that happen. She walked over to Kelvin, lifting her dress slightly. "Why are you buying it?"
Kelvin shot back, "Do I need to explain it to you?"
"Are you giving it to Fiona?" Penelope asked.
Kelvin raised an eyebrow. "So what?"
"There are plenty of good items coming up; this bracelet is just the start," Penelope softened her tone. "No need to waste money."
Kelvin looked at her. "I don't care about the money."
"Are you here to cause trouble again?" Fiona pushed Penelope aside. "Mr. Davis is giving me a gift, what’s it to you!"
Penelope snapped, "Fiona, you don't deserve that bracelet!"
Fiona was about to fire back, but Kelvin calmly asked, "Penelope, is this bracelet really important to you?"
She rarely lost her cool, usually staying uncompetitive and unassertive, but now she was acting out of character.
"Yes," Penelope admitted, her voice choking up. "It belonged to my mother."
"I see," Kelvin said, "Then I must buy it even more."
Penelope clenched her dress, her palms sweaty. Once he had it, he’d never give it to her. He hated the Cooper Family too much.
"Fine," Penelope nodded. "But please don't give it to Fiona, okay?"
He sneered, "I can do whatever I want with it!"
Penelope felt utterly desperate.
"$1.4 million going once, $1.4 million going twice," the host called out, "Any higher bids?"
Nathan raised his paddle. "I'll bid $2 million."
Kelvin followed quickly. "$3 million."
Nathan was about to bid again, but Penelope shook her head, signaling it was pointless; he couldn't outbid Kelvin.
Nathan was frustrated; he knew how important the bracelet was to Penelope. But then his phone buzzed with a message: [Do not go against Mr. Davis! I just froze your bank account!]
It was from the Smith Family.
"Alright, $3 million! Sold!" The waiter struck his gavel. "Congrats, Mr. Davis!"
Fiona was thrilled. She thought, 'Tomorrow's headlines will be about Kelvin spending millions on a bracelet just to make me smile!'
The attendants carefully brought the bracelet over. Penelope closed her eyes and turned to leave. What was the point of staying? To watch Kelvin put the bracelet on Fiona's wrist? She needed to hide somewhere and cry her heart out. After crying, she’d have to act like nothing happened, not letting anyone see her tears.
"Mr. Davis," the attendant held the tray, "Here's your bracelet."
Kelvin casually picked it up and glanced at it. Fiona eagerly raised her hand, waiting for him to put it on her. But Kelvin tossed the bracelet back onto the tray like it was nothing.
Fiona was stunned. "Mr. Davis?"
Kelvin instructed, "Send it to the King Manor and lock it in the safe."
His subordinate nodded. "Yes, Mr. Davis."
"That's mine!" Fiona was confused. "Mr. Davis, you bought it, so why are you taking it home?"
Kelvin shot back, "Did I ever say I was giving it to you?"
Fiona was stunned. He was right; he never promised it to her. He just said he’d buy it, not that it was for her. Seeing Kelvin's annoyed look, Fiona decided not to push it. She’d find another way to get it from him later.
In the restroom, Penelope leaned against the wall, tilting her head back to keep her tears from ruining her makeup. After pulling herself together, she walked out and found Nathan waiting for her.
"Here, wipe your tears," he said, handing her a tissue.
"Thanks," Penelope muttered.
"Don't mention it," Nathan sighed, feeling guilty. "Kelvin still got the bracelet."
Penelope lowered her head. "Wasn't that expected?"
Nathan said, "Penelope, no matter what, he is your husband. He should—"
Penelope cut him off, "You know how much Kelvin hates the Cooper Family."
Nathan was silent for a few seconds before finally sighing, "I'm sorry, I'm not strong enough to protect you. Sent abroad by my dad back then, and now my bank account frozen by him today."
He punched the wall in frustration.
Penelope gave a bitter smile. "Given the Cooper Family's situation, everyone wants to stay far away, afraid of Kelvin's wrath."
Nathan was puzzled. "Penelope, Mr. Cooper was a brilliant doctor. How could he have made such a huge mistake that cost a life?"
Penelope replied, "My dad didn't make a mistake."
Nathan asked, "What did you say?"
Penelope looked at him. "Nathan, I said my dad was framed. Do you believe me?"
This was something she only dared to share with Nathan. Others wouldn’t understand and might even inform Kelvin.
"I believe in Mr. Cooper," Nathan said firmly. "There must be more to this!"
Penelope was equally resolute. "I will investigate it. One day, I will clear my dad's name and end all this hatred."
Nathan offered, "Penelope, how will you investigate? If Kelvin finds out, he’ll be furious! Let me help you!"
"I don't have any leads right now, you can't help much, but I appreciate the thought," Penelope forced a smile and returned to the venue.
From a distance, Fiona was watching her. She saw Penelope come out from the restroom, followed closely by Nathan. These two had an unusual relationship. A calculating glint flashed in Fiona's eyes.
The auction continued, with items being bought one after another. But Kelvin didn’t bid again.
"$300,000 worth of diamond bracelet, and you spent $3 million," Timothy stroked his chin. "Kelvin, what were you thinking?"
Kelvin replied, "I have too much money."
Kelvin swirled the champagne in his hand. "It's for charity anyway. The higher the bid, the more we donate, and the Davis Group gets a good reputation."
"You're always calculating," Timothy clapped. "Impressive!"
Kelvin handed the champagne to him. "I'm leaving, you stay."
Timothy protested, "Why? I want to leave too!"
Kelvin responded, "You're my subordinate. There's a celebration banquet after the auction, you represent the Davis Group."
Seeing Kelvin left, Timothy gritted his teeth. "Kelvin, you capitalist scum!"
In the car, Kelvin rubbed his temples. "Back to the King Manor."
The driver nodded. "Yes, Mr. Davis."
The car slowly drove away, and Kelvin picked up his phone to send a message to Penelope: [Get back to the King Mansion yourself.]
Penelope, upon receiving the message, breathed a sigh of relief and was finally able to leave.
Just as she was about to step out, her phone rang again. She looked at it; it was a message from an unknown number: [Want to know who the father of your child is? Come to the hotel, room 6888.]
Penelope quickly guessed that the sender was Fiona! It had to be her! What was Fiona up to? If she went, would she really find out who the father of her child was?
