Chapter 28
Monica stepped in front of Penelope, just like she used to back in school whenever someone tried to mess with her.
"Penelope, you good? Hurry up and get dressed," Monica said.
Penelope quickly fixed her dress, covering herself up. "Yeah, I'm fine now."
"If I had shown up a second later, you'd be mortified!" Monica shot back. "Who is this chick anyway?"
Penelope hesitated, "She’s..."
Monica pushed, "Come on, spit it out!"
Penelope sighed, "She’s Kelvin’s date."
Fiona sneered, "Finally figured it out? If you know what's good for you, just scram. I’m only here for Penelope!"
Monica rolled her eyes, "And being a side chick is something to brag about?"
Fiona's face twisted in anger.
Monica then went on, "You owe Penelope an apology."
"Apologize? Not a chance!" Fiona scoffed, "Fine, Monica, right? I’ll remember you. Pray we don’t cross paths again!"
Penelope quickly interjected, "This has nothing to do with Monica, Fiona. It’s between us."
Even now, she was more worried about not dragging Monica into this mess.
"Well, isn’t this a lively scene," Timothy walked over. "What’s going on here?"
Monica fumed, "We ran into a nutcase!"
Timothy glanced at Fiona. "Isn’t this Kelvin’s date? What’s the issue? Monica works for me. If there’s a problem, take it up with me."
Fiona asked, "And you are?"
"Timothy," he said, "Vice President of the Davis Group."
With Timothy stepping in, Fiona couldn’t keep up her tough act.
"Mr. Foster," Fiona quickly switched to a polite tone. "Penelope messed up my dress first."
Timothy asked, "Where’s the stain? Show me."
"It’s right here." Fiona looked down but saw nothing. The stain must’ve rubbed off during the scuffle.
It was just a tiny bit of cream, and Fiona was blowing it out of proportion.
"Am I blind?" Timothy spread his hands. "I don’t see anything."
Monica chimed in, "Mr. Foster, your eyes are just fine!"
Fiona was mortified.
Penelope was lucky to have so many people backing her up!
Fiona gritted her teeth and turned to leave in a huff.
"Hold up," Timothy said, "Look, Kelvin’s here. Let’s hear what he has to say."
Kelvin had shown up at some point.
With his hands in his pockets, he stood tall, scanning everyone with a cold gaze.
"Mr. Davis!" Fiona rushed over. "You’ve got to help me."
He spoke coolly, "The auction’s about to start."
Fiona insisted, "But my dress."
Kelvin reassured her, "Tomorrow, I’ll have the store manager send you all the new styles for this year."
Fiona instantly perked up and smiled, "Thank you, Mr. Davis!"
She shot Penelope a smug look and left, arm in arm with Kelvin.
Monica looked ready to charge.
"Monica," Penelope shook her head. "Let it go."
Monica snapped, "Penelope, you’re such a pushover! You’re the real Mrs. Davis!"
Why did Penelope let a side chick act so high and mighty and get bullied like this?
If Monica were in Penelope's shoes, she would've rushed up and given Fiona a good beating, showing her who the real wife was!
"Thanks for earlier," Penelope said, "But next time, don't be so impulsive. Fiona holds grudges and will come after you."
Monica stomped her foot. "Fine, I was in your business way too much!"
She stormed off in a huff.
Timothy chased after her. "Penelope isn't even worried, so why are you?"
Monica crossed her arms. "Mr. Foster, can you do me a favor?"
Timothy smirked, "What can you give me?"
Monica rolled her eyes. "I'll treat you to meals for a month."
Timothy nodded. "Deal!"
Monica continued, "I want to find out what secret Penelope is hiding."
Timothy replied, "Leave it to me."
"Can you really do it?" Monica was skeptical. "If you can't find out, you'll have to treat me to meals for a year!"
Timothy grinned confidently. "Actually, I'm curious about what's going on between Kelvin and Penelope too. Perfect, I can satisfy my curiosity while helping you."
Monica high-fived him. "Deal!"
Just then, the lights in the venue dimmed, and all the spotlights focused on the stage.
The auction had begun.
"Thank you all for attending the charity auction. All the proceeds from tonight's auction will be donated to help those in need," the host announced, "Now, let's reveal the first auction item of the night."
As the red cloth was lifted, a diamond bracelet appeared in everyone's view.
The quality was top-notch, crystal clear.
Penelope murmured, "That's my mom's bracelet."
She recognized it instantly.
It had been on Grace's wrist since Penelope could remember, passed down from her grandmother.
Grace had said that when Penelope got married, the bracelet would be hers.
Later, when the Cooper Family fell on hard times, all the valuable items in the house were sold off.
She never expected to see this diamond bracelet again today.
The host spoke, "The starting bid is $300,000. The highest bidder wins!"
Penelope didn't have that kind of money!
And the people present, all wealthy and distinguished, had little interest in this ordinary diamond bracelet.
Suddenly, a faint female voice rang out, "I'll bid $300,000."
Everyone turned to look at the owner of the voice.
Penelope was holding up her bidding paddle, her eyes resolute.
"You? Do you have the money?" Fiona saw it was Penelope and immediately mocked, "You couldn't even come up with $2,000, let alone $300,000!"
The room erupted in laughter.
Penelope bit her lip.
She had no money, but she couldn't just watch the diamond bracelet be bought by someone else.
Fiona loudly uttered, "Ignore her. She's messing around here!"
Penelope slowly lowered her bidding paddle.
She thought, 'Mom, I'm sorry. I can't protect your beloved bracelet.'
Kelvin glanced thoughtfully at Penelope.
At that moment, Nathan bid, "400,000 dollars."
Hearing this voice, Penelope looked up at him sharply.
She knew Nathan had recognized it too!
Nathan gave her a slight smile, reassuring her with his eyes.
He would have bought it and then given it to her.
The host nodded. "Alright, Mr. Smith has bid $400,000. Is there a higher bid?"
