Chapter 26
Kelvin sneered, curling his lips. "You think you're worthy?"
Penelope just shook her head. "No."
"Good to know," Kelvin said, "I'll be taking Fiona."
"Okay," Penelope replied.
"You, come alone," he ordered. "Find a corner where I can see you and stay put."
Penelope had no clue what he was up to, but she knew she couldn't say no.
"Got it. But," she added, "I don't have the right clothes."
Kelvin leaned back in his chair, squinting at her. "Penelope, remember the first time we met?"
She paused and nodded. "Yeah."
Not only did she remember, it was burned into her memory as the start of her nightmare.
They first met at the University of LA; she was called to the headmaster's office.
Naively, she opened the door to find the stern and intimidating Kelvin.
He was in a black suit, so oppressive she was too scared to speak.
"Are you Dr. Cooper's daughter?" he asked.
"Yes," she nodded.
"Is your name Penelope?" he pressed.
"Yes," she admitted.
"Good," he said, standing up and walking towards her. "Come with me."
And just like that, she was under his control.
She didn't even get to say goodbye to Monica.
Kelvin snorted, "I'll take you buying one tonight. Now get out!"
He realized Penelope hadn't changed much since their first meeting.
She wasn't crazy or vacant, just like a flower blooming among thorns, even more beautiful.
She had shed her schoolgirl naivety, now exuding womanly charm, with a curvaceous figure.
Kelvin closed his eyes, shaking off the chaotic thoughts in his mind.
After work, Penelope hurriedly got into Kelvin's car, looking flustered, afraid of being seen.
The car stopped at a high-end clothing store.
This place only served VIPs, with personal designers taking measurements, offering unique styles worldwide, ensuring no one else would wear the same outfit.
It was also expensive.
So, Penelope hesitated and asked, "Are you sure you want to buy clothes for me here?"
Kelvin nodded. "Yes."
Penelope hesitated. "Well."
"Don't you like the style here?" Kelvin asked.
"Not that. Can you give me the money instead?" she replied.
Kelvin got out of the car with a cold face. "No way!"
Once inside, Kelvin handed her over to the staff and sat in the lounge area drinking coffee.
The store manager personally attended to her, spending an hour changing Penelope from head to toe!
As the curtain slowly opened, Penelope walked out, holding her skirt.
"Mr. Davis, look," the manager said, "She's truly beautiful."
Kelvin looked up.
A look of amazement flashed in his eyes.
The skirt was encrusted with diamonds, sparkling brilliantly, reflecting dazzling light with Penelope's every step.
The off-shoulder design perfectly showcased Penelope's collarbones and long neck, not to mention her slender waist and curvaceous figure.
"She looks better than the models," the manager praised repeatedly, "She'll be the center of attention at any event!"
Penelope felt a bit uneasy.
The reflection in the mirror was too beautiful.
She hadn't seen herself like this in a long time; the last time was at her twentieth birthday party.
Kelvin stared at her, momentarily forgetting to look away.
From the first time he saw Penelope, he knew she was a beauty.
Now, she had fully grown into her looks.
"Is this one okay?" Penelope asked softly, "What do you think?"
Kelvin snapped back to reality, looking down at the magazine in his hand. "It's hideous."
The manager was stunned.
"Change it!" Kelvin demanded, "Change something more understated!"
How could she have been dressed so stunningly and ethereally?
The thought of men at the party constantly admiring her made Kelvin want to hide her away! No one else could have seen her!
In the end, Penelope wore a light pink long dress.
Simple and low-key, yet it couldn't have hidden her beauty.
Kelvin handed her over to the driver. "Take her to the venue."
Then, he went to pick up Fiona.
Penelope felt like Cinderella, wearing a beautiful dress and riding a pumpkin carriage, knowing that at midnight the magic would have disappeared, and she would still have been the simple girl she was.
This charity auction was high-profile, attended by bigwigs from various fields and people with status and influence.
Penelope, alone, seemed out of place, and no one knew her.
So, when she tried to enter the venue, a waiter stopped her. "Not just anyone can get in with a dress. Stay on the side!"
Penelope responded calmly, "I'm here to attend the charity auction."
The waiter questioned, "Entry by invitation only! Do you have one?"
Penelope stammered, "I."
Kelvin didn't give her one!
But several people nearby walked in without the waiter checking their invitations.
Penelope asked, "Why don't you check them too? Why is it only me?"
"Their faces are their passes. Everyone in LA knows them. And you? Who are you? Move along!" As he spoke, the waiter tried to push her away.
Penelope, wearing high heels she wasn't used to, and a long skirt, stumbled back a few steps, almost falling.
"Watch out," At that moment, a pair of hands steadied her.
Penelope regained her balance and looked back gratefully. "Thank you."
But when she saw it was Nathan, her smile froze.
"Why are you alone?" Nathan asked, "Where's Mr. Davis?"
Penelope uttered, "That's none of your business, Mr. Smith. It's my personal matter."
Nathan sighed, "How could he leave you here to be bullied?"
Penelope pulled her hand back. "I just left the invitation in the car. I'll go get it now."
"No need," Nathan grabbed her hand again. "Come in with me."
The waiter, seeing Nathan, quickly put on a smile. "Mr. Smith, this woman is just trying to latch onto a man. Don't be too kind. I've seen plenty of women like her trying to crash parties and seduce men!"
Nathan's face darkened. "She's my friend. What nonsense are you spouting?"
