Chapter 40

How could anyone question Kelvin like that?

"Yeah," Penelope shot back, not holding back, "You never sleep with me, and you don't want to sleep with Fiona either. What guy would choose to live like a monk? I can't think of any other reason."

Kelvin's hand tightened around her neck.

"Stop pushing me. I'm not sleeping with you," he murmured, his lips brushing her cheek. "Don't piss me off, it's not gonna end well for you."

Penelope was actually relieved he didn't want to sleep with her.

"So, are you just gonna keep fooling your grandpa?" she asked.

"For now," Kelvin said, squinting. "Get up, we're going to the hospital."

Penelope's alarm bells went off. "Hospital?"

"To draw your blood," Kelvin explained. "Michael's still in danger. Your blood type matches his, so we need more."

"No way!" Penelope shot back without hesitation.

They took so much blood from her yesterday; she was already feeling weak. If they did it again today, she might have a miscarriage!

Kelvin's tone got even harsher. "You have to."

"The hospital can use the blood bank, and Fiona can donate herself!" Penelope argued.

Kelvin sneered, "Your life is cheap; your blood is expendable."

Penelope clenched her teeth. "I'm not going."

"Do you want to go willingly or be dragged there?" Kelvin stood up, looking down at her, tugging at his tie.

For her child's sake, Penelope had to stand her ground this time. "I'm not going."

"Mr. Davis!" Jeff banged on the door. "I just got a call from the hospital!"

"Come in! What's happening?" Kelvin asked.

Jeff replied, "It's news from Mrs. Davis's mother's hospital!"

Penelope's heart skipped a beat. "What happened to my mom?"

She jumped out of bed, grabbing Jeff's hand, her eyes wide with panic.

Since Kelvin took Grace from the hospital, she hadn't heard a word about her.

"Mrs. Davis, it's good news." Jeff smiled, "The hospital said Mrs. Cooper has woken up!"

Penelope could hardly believe it.

Grace woke up?

A patient in a vegetative state woke up!

This was a rare medical miracle!

Finally, there was some good news.

No matter how much pain or suffering she endured, she never cried, but now she was so happy that tears streamed down her face. "Thank God, I still have my mom."

Tears of joy flowed freely.

Penelope turned to Kelvin. "Can I go see my mother?"

Afraid he might say no, she quickly promised, "I just want to see her, nothing else! She must miss me too."

Kelvin nodded, "Okay."

Penelope's eyes lit up. "Really?"

But something felt off. Kelvin wasn't usually this agreeable.

There had to be a catch.

"Of course, it's true," Kelvin said, "You go draw blood, and then you can go see your mother."

Sure enough!

Penelope had guessed it right!

They still wanted her blood!

Kelvin looked relaxed, one hand in his pocket. "You're going to draw blood anyway. Cooperate a bit, and you can see your mother."

Penelope's nails dug into her palm.

On one side was her child, on the other was Grace.

This decision was tearing her apart.

"I'll give you five minutes to think about it," Kelvin said, walking past her. "You only get this one chance."

His shirt brushed against her clothes.

Kelvin always meant what he said.

If she hesitated any longer, she'd end up having her blood drawn and not seeing Grace!

Penelope turned and quickly grabbed his sleeve. "Kelvin."

He stopped, raising an eyebrow.

"I've made up my mind," Penelope said with great difficulty, "I want to see my mother."

Kelvin nodded. "Then go draw blood."

Penelope nodded. "Okay."

Jeff spoke up, "Mr. Davis, Ms. Davis can't draw blood two days in a row."

Kelvin cut him off, "Shut up!"

Even Jeff knew this was common sense, but Kelvin didn't care about her well-being.

Penelope stood alone at the master bedroom door, looking down at her flat belly.

"Baby, I'm sorry," she whispered, "I have no choice. I also have my mother, and I miss her so much. I have to go see her. Baby, I'm taking you to see your grandma."

She continued, "Please, be strong. Don't leave me. I'm sorry. I will take care of you and protect you wholeheartedly in the future. Stay with me, okay?"

Penelope had no other choice. She could only hope her child would survive.

Downstairs, heading to the dining room, she found that Jeff had asked the cook to prepare blood-boosting food for her.

Penelope gave Jeff a grateful look.

During this time, Jeff had been helping her openly and secretly. He was the only one in King Manor who truly treated her well.

The other servants looked down on her, their eyes filled with contempt.

Penelope tried hard to eat her fill. She couldn't afford to let anything happen to her; otherwise, her baby would really be in danger.
