Chapter 946 Kelvin and Mom, Recently a Bit Strange
As Kelvin came downstairs, the kids were already dressed and ready, just waiting to finish breakfast before heading to preschool.
"Kelvin!" Sam bolted over as soon as he spotted him. "You remember what you promised me, right?"
His face was lit up with excitement.
Kelvin nodded. "Yeah, I remember."
"Awesome." Sam let out a sigh of relief. "I mean, we both have the last name Davis. You wouldn't lie to me, right?"
His little star! He dreamed about it!
He was so used to hearing "Sam Davis" that he couldn't stand being called Sam Cooper anymore. He'd correct anyone who got it wrong, especially in front of Kelvin.
"But Sam," Lucy piped up from the side, "the reason you have Dad's last name is 'cause you lost to me in rock-paper-scissors."
Sam looked a bit embarrassed.
After a moment, he cleared his throat. "…Men are talking here, girls shouldn't interrupt."
Lucy wasn't fazed. She turned to Kelvin. "Dad, look, he's being mean to me!"
"How am I being mean to you?!"
"You can talk to Dad, so why can't I?" Lucy shot back confidently. "He's our dad, not just yours. Besides, you haven't even called him Dad yet."
"I, I…"
Sam, usually quick on his feet, was suddenly tongue-tied.
Kelvin was a bit taken aback. It seemed sweet Lucy had a sharp side, too.
Not bad, his daughter wouldn't be easily fooled by boys in the future!
"Fine, I won't argue with you. A good man doesn't fight with women." Sam shrugged it off and sidled up to Kelvin with a grin. "Actually… Kelvin, I know everything."
"Know what?"
"You're building a glass house, all square and bright," Sam said. "And even though you covered part of it with velvet, I still saw it. It's a telescope, and a super expensive one at that!"
He looked both thrilled and bashful. "You do care about me. Not only did you give me my own little star, but you also got a telescope and built a glasshouse for me to check it out."
"Who would've thought, you act all indifferent, complaining about this and that, but deep down, you're full of love for me."
Sam loved to explore and play, and there wasn't a corner of The King Manor he hadn't been to. Of course, he noticed the construction of the house long ago.
Kelvin's mouth twitched.
He had just witnessed what it meant to be "self-deluded."
But he didn't correct him, letting Sam run with his misunderstanding.
"Yeah," Kelvin said. "It's ready. You can go anytime."
"That fast! Kelvin, you're the best!"
"But… be careful," Kelvin warned. "Don't break anything."
He still wanted to take Penelope to the glasshouse to see Vesper Davis when he had the chance. It was a special kind of romance just for them. No one else knew or could understand.
"I wouldn't dream of breaking it. Even if I broke, that telescope must stay intact!" Sam saluted smartly. "You're the best, Kelvin!"
Kelvin glanced at him. "Between guys, there's no need for 'love you.'"
So cheesy!
With that, he bent down to pick up Lucy. "Time for breakfast. Come on, Daddy's got you."
Sam was speechless.
Was this guy for real?
He was all stern with him but all cuddly with Lucy.
But for the sake of the star and the telescope, Sam could overlook it!
"Dad," Lucy asked, "isn't Mommy having breakfast with us?"
"She's still sleeping. Let's not wake her up."
"Is Mommy having a baby?"
Kelvin paused. "Why do you think that?"
He had asked the kids before if they wanted a sibling, but it wasn't happening that fast!
If he and Penelope were planning for a baby, they'd at least start with preparations. He'd quit smoking and drinking, and get ready for it. It wasn't something that just happened overnight.
Lucy answered seriously, "Because only pregnant women like to sleep so much."
"Where'd you hear that?" Kelvin asked, curious.
"My teacher said so, and it's in books too. Every mom has a hard time when she's pregnant. Their belly gets big, it's hard to walk, they get fat and ugly, and they can't even sleep on their back at night…"
"No, no," Sam corrected from the side. "Mom sometimes sleeps until noon, and sometimes she doesn't come home at night. It's not that she likes sleeping; her schedule is just all messed up, day and night flipped!"
Lucy immediately asked Kelvin, "Is that true? Dad, why don't you make sure Mommy goes to bed on time?"
"I will," Kelvin nodded. "Starting tonight, I'll make sure she goes to bed early and wakes up early."
"Sam, let's help keep an eye on Mommy!"
Sam agreed, "But we don't share a bed with her. How would we know if she's sleeping?"
"We can remind her to go to her room early," Lucy suggested. "Once she's in her room, what else can she do but sleep?"
"Make us a little brother or sister."
Lucy had a look of sudden realization.
Kelvin showed no expression because he wasn't embarrassed; he was just straightforward.
"Dad, you can do it," Lucy said. "If Mommy wants to have a baby, I'd be happy to have a little brother or sister!"
"Alright, I'll do my best."
Lucy held out her pinky. "Pinky promise!"
Kelvin would go along with anything his daughter did, no matter how childish it was.
Sam stood by, eyes darting around, clearly plotting something.
Even after breakfast, there was no sign of Penelope.
Sam and Lucy were off to preschool, and the driver was already waiting with the car.
"Bye, Dad."
"Bye, Kelvin."
The car slowly pulled away from The King Manor.
Sam glanced back, seeing Kelvin standing alone at the door, watching them leave.
"Lucy," he asked, "have you noticed… Kelvin and Mom have been acting a bit strange lately?"
"Have they? Besides Mom's irregular sleep schedule, everything seems normal to me."
Sam scoffed. "Kelvin spoils you so much, and you haven't noticed a thing."
Lucy, not backing down, nudged his shoulder. "Then tell me, what's off?"
"I can't put my finger on it, but they just seem a bit awkward, not as lovey-dovey as before."
"Do you think they had a fight?" Lucy asked. "Remember when we went to the master bedroom and saw Dad sleeping on the floor?"
Sam slapped his thigh. "Exactly! Exactly!"
