Chapter 1091 How About Being Discharged Tomorrow?
"You... you, you, you..."
Sam and Lucy were totally stunned.
Penelope had learned to lie, and she did it without flinching. "I missed my husband, so I came to the city where he's on a business trip to be with him."
Sam and Lucy's jaws dropped.
"Is that not allowed?" Penelope asked. "Is there a problem with that?"
It took Sam a moment to find his voice. "But, didn't you say you were staying at Monica's tonight and wouldn't be coming home?"
That was the excuse Penelope had given. She didn't plan on going back to The King Manor tonight and didn't want to be running between the hospital and home, so she told Sam and Lucy she was staying at Monica's.
But now, the truth was out.
She had to come up with another lie to cover the first one!
"I deceived you all," Penelope confessed. "I was afraid you'd make fun of me, so I said I was staying at Monica's. But actually, I came to see Kelvin."
Lucy mumbled, "So you went to see Dad."
"Yes, I won't be home for the next few days. You need to listen to Jeff and Ruby and be good, okay?"
Lucy nodded. "Okay, Mommy."
Sam's expression was... complicated.
"Why didn't you just say so?" he said. "What's there to be embarrassed about? We wouldn't make fun of you. You scared me. I thought Kelvin had done something to hurt you. I was just thinking about whether I should side with Dad or Mom."
Penelope was silent.
"What's there to think about?" Lucy tilted her head at him. "Sam, of course, you should side with Mom!"
"But I have Dad's last name! If I side with Mom, I'd have to change my name back to Sam Cooper. Changing names all the time is such a hassle."
Penelope remained speechless.
Forget it, let them be.
She didn't want to talk anymore. She handed the phone back to Kelvin and sat down to continue peeling the apple.
"Kelvin," Sam said, "you're so lucky. Mom came all the way here just to be with you on your business trip. That's a privilege only you get!"
"Don't be too envious."
"You're enjoying yourself, but what about us? We're left to be wild kids with no one to look after us?"
Penelope's voice came through. "There are plenty of people at home to look after you two."
Kelvin said slowly, "Sam, were you just suspecting... that I was with another woman?"
Sam's eyes started to wander. He didn't respond and instead said, "It's late. Time for bed. We have school tomorrow! Dad, Mom, don't worry. I'll be good and take care of Lucy!"
Kelvin wasn't buying it.
Earlier, Sam had cornered him with questions, leaving him speechless and helpless until Penelope stepped in to save the day.
Now, he wasn't going to let Sam off the hook!
"Why would you suspect that?" Kelvin asked. "Do you think I'm that unreliable?"
"Because your recent behavior has been really suspicious..."
"How so? Because of my overtime? Business trips?"
Sam didn't answer. He put the phone down. "I'm going to take a shower! Bye!"
Kelvin chuckled helplessly.
He had been thinking about how to push Penelope away, to make her leave him, but he hadn't come up with a good plan.
Unexpectedly... the idea came from Sam.
Since Sam always suspected he had another woman, then... after he was discharged, he could make that suspicion a reality!
That way, everything would flow logically, with evidence and reasoning, without seeming abrupt or overly deliberate, avoiding any flaws or slip-ups.
But... which woman should Kelvin find to play this role?
He had plenty of options, lots of women throwing themselves at him, but he needed someone he had a history with, someone he could control. He couldn't just randomly pick someone and claim he had fallen for her, right? That wouldn't make sense.
This act had to be convincing, with every detail meticulously planned!
"Kelvin? Kelvin?" Penelope called his name several times. "What are you thinking about so seriously? Have the apple. I just finished cutting it."
She held a piece of apple to his mouth.
Kelvin opened his mouth. "It's really sweet."
"Of course, I specifically asked the store clerk to pick the sweetest apples."
"This is definitely the sweetest apple I've ever had," Kelvin said. "Because you cut it yourself."
Penelope laughed. "Yes, even your words are sweet, saying such sugary things."
Kelvin looked at her, his eyes deepening.
"Penelope, you... You don't need to go back to The King Manor," he said. "You can't go back."
"Yeah, I said I'm with you. How could I go home?" Penelope pouted. "It's all Sam's fault. How can a kid be so perceptive? He's impossible to fool. In a couple of years, we won't be able to trick him at all. He might even start tricking us."
But in that situation, Penelope had no choice but to appear in Kelvin's video call.
Otherwise, how could they explain it to Sam and Lucy?
Kelvin couldn't just pull some random person into the frame!
Especially since they were in a hospital room. Sam and Lucy couldn't know Kelvin was hospitalized.
"Well, now I can stay with you until you're discharged," Penelope said. "I'll take care of you, day and night, without leaving your side."
Kelvin was silent for a moment, then said, "Penelope, how about... we get discharged tomorrow?"
She was stunned.
"I feel much better," Kelvin said, looking at her. "I can lift you, walk normally, and eat. Staying in the hospital is boring. Let's go home. It's more comfortable and clean, better for recovery."
"Why are you in such a hurry to leave the hospital..."
Penelope was surprised. Going home tomorrow? That was so soon.
Cameron had said he needed to stay for at least a week!
"Recovering at home is the same," Kelvin replied. "Cameron can come by every day to give me my infusion."
He didn't want to stay in the hospital any longer.
The strong smell of disinfectant, the complex medical equipment, and the white walls gave a suffocating, oppressive feeling, with no warmth at all.
Kelvin wanted to spend his limited remaining time with more beauty and warmth.
He didn't want to waste time in the hospital.
"But if something unexpected happens, the hospital can handle it best and fastest," Penelope replied. "It's not like a few more days will make a big difference. Let's stay in the hospital for now."
She thought Kelvin wanted to get out early to go back to work.
After all, he was a workaholic.
However, it turned out that he just wanted to go home to recover.
