Chapter 13
Not really sure what he was up to, Penelope bit her lip, unbuttoned her shirt, and slowly took it off.
"Turn around," Kelvin ordered.
She did as he said.
On her delicate back, a long bloodstain stretched from her shoulder to her waist, looking pretty gnarly.
Penelope shivered, goosebumps popping up all over her skin.
"You'd rather go through this pain?" Kelvin walked over, his rough fingertips brushing the wound. "Are you stupid or something?"
Penelope shot back, "I'd rather die than be humiliated."
"Such guts," Kelvin sneered. "You made it this time, but what about next time?"
Penelope replied, "Kelvin, more than hurting my body, you want to crush my dignity and pride, right?"
Kelvin smirked, "Exactly! Mental torment is the real deal!"
His fingers pressed slightly into the freshly scabbed wound, making Penelope wince in pain.
"Don't mess with Fiona. Whatever she says, just take it," Kelvin warned. "Got it?"
Penelope nodded, "Got it."
There was a knock at the door, and someone called out, "Mr. Davis, your client is here."
Kelvin replied, "Come in."
He grabbed her clothes and tossed them at her face. "Get in there and put these on."
She hurried into the lounge.
This was a private area connected to the office, very secluded and well-equipped.
Penelope rummaged around and found a first aid kit, feeling a bit of relief.
She could patch herself up without spending a dime.
Outside, Kelvin sat on the sofa, watching Nathan walk in.
"Mr. Davis, it's a pleasure to meet you," Nathan greeted politely. "I'm here with full sincerity to discuss our cooperation."
Kelvin nodded. "Have a seat."
The Davis Group owned a ton of industries, with jewelry being a big moneymaker, raking in billions every year.
The nation's top gemstone materials came from the Davis Group.
Now, Kelvin wanted to go beyond just supplying raw materials and start a jewelry brand to sell directly to consumers.
And the Smith Group owned a well-known jewelry brand, "Peal Wet."
Nathan pulled out a stack of sketches. "Mr. Davis, if you want to start a jewelry brand using your resources, you'll need top-notch designers. These are the best-selling designs from 'Peal Wet' each year. Take a look."
He wanted to team up with Kelvin.
He'd provide the designs and brand influence, while Kelvin would supply resources, traffic, and raw materials.
Everyone wanted to work with the Davis Group. Once they did, profits would skyrocket!
Nathan had just come back to the country to take over the Smith Group and hoped to make a big splash to earn his father's and the board's approval.
Kelvin took the sketches.
The office was super quiet, with only the sound of pages turning.
In the lounge, Penelope, after applying the medicine, picked up the first aid kit to put it back. But her hand slipped, and the kit fell.
The contents of the first aid kit were scattered everywhere.
The noise was loud enough for Nathan to hear.
But Kelvin acted like nothing happened, still focused on the jewelry designs.
"Mr. Davis," Nathan couldn't help but ask, "what was that noise?"
Kelvin replied nonchalantly, "Nothing."
Penelope froze for a couple of seconds, then quickly squatted down to clean up, making more rustling sounds.
Still shaken, she put the first aid kit back in place, clutching her wildly beating heart.
After waiting for over ten minutes, she didn't hear any sound from outside.
"It should be safe to go out now," she muttered to herself. "Let me check the situation."
Penelope tiptoed to the door, slowly pushed it open a crack, and peeked outside.
From this angle, she couldn't see the reception area.
She pushed the door open a bit more, poked her head out, and looked to the right. No one was there.
Then she looked to the left.
A corner of a black suit came into her view.
Penelope slowly raised her head to see Kelvin smirking. "What are you looking at?" he asked.
She gasped and quickly stood up straight. "Nothing, I'm leaving now!"
She took two steps and met Nathan's shocked gaze.
Penelope froze too. 'Why is Nathan here? So, Kelvin's client is him!'
"This is the person who made the noise earlier," Kelvin explained calmly. "Sorry for the disturbance, Mr. Smith."
Penelope smiled politely. "Sorry for the interruption. Please continue."
She walked past Nathan without looking at him, as if they were strangers.
Nathan looked like he wanted to say something but held back.
At that moment, Kelvin suddenly called out to her, "Wait."
She turned around. "Mr. Davis?"
"Penelope," Kelvin asked, "if I remember correctly, you majored in jewelry design in college."
Back then, Penelope was the cherished one of the Cooper Family, free-spirited and only needed to pursue love and dreams, so she chose the major she liked.
Her design sketches won awards frequently and were highly praised in the industry.
But now, it took all her strength just to stay alive.
"Yes," Penelope nodded. "But I didn't graduate."
She had one more year to complete her studies, but Kelvin appeared and took her straight to the mental hospital.
Since then, her life had changed drastically.
As soon as she finished speaking, the office door opened from the outside.
A man with a very charming demeanor and a roguish smile walked in.
This was Timothy Foster.
He was the vice president of the Davis Group, Kelvin's best friend, and highly capable.
Timothy raised an eyebrow. "Kelvin, you brought me back from the overseas branch just to establish a jewelry brand and have me take charge?"
Kelvin nodded. "Yes. Also, you'll be in charge of the film department."
Timothy almost jumped up. "You're going into the entertainment industry too?"
