Chapter 31
"Penelope!" Nathan shouted, trying to catch up.
"If you wanna die, just follow me!" Kelvin snapped, practically dragging Penelope along.
At the hospital, the results came back fast; Penelope wasn't lying.
"I told you, Nathan and I have nothing going on," Penelope said.
Kelvin threw the test results in her face, the papers fluttering to the ground.
"Penelope," he growled, "nothing happened because there wasn't enough time, right? What if I'd been five minutes later?"
Penelope laughed bitterly, glaring at him. "How could I have anything with Nathan? He was my ex-fiancé who ditched me to go abroad. Now, we're business rivals!"
Kelvin snapped, "Because you're Penelope, you slut!"
His words cut deep, shattering her self-esteem.
Kelvin's eyes blazed with anger. "You and Nathan have been flirting for ages. Do you think I don't know? I was gone for a bit, and you threw yourself at him?"
"Why insult me like this? Why," Penelope closed her eyes, holding back tears. "Before we get divorced, I would never cheat!"
Kelvin sneered, "Penelope, even after the divorce, it's not allowed!"
She lowered her head bitterly. "Yes, my whole life will be controlled by you."
Kelvin spat, "That's right! This is what you owe me! You're making up for the Cooper Family!"
Penelope clenched her fists, suppressing her emotions, her resolve to find the truth growing stronger!
One day, she would throw the evidence in Kelvin's face and tell him she never owed him anything!
That day would definitely come!
Back at the King Manor, Kelvin threw Penelope into the bathtub.
Water splashed everywhere.
Penelope choked on the water several times, struggling to surface, only to be pushed back in by Kelvin.
"Clean yourself up," Kelvin ordered.
This repeated several times, and Kelvin got wet too, but he didn't care.
Penelope, exhausted, lay limply on the edge of the bathtub.
"Listen up," Kelvin said, bending down to grab her chin, "The Davis Group is holding a press conference tomorrow to announce the launch of a new jewelry brand, 'Adoring Cupid', officially competing with the Smith Group's 'Pearl Wet'."
He continued, "Penelope, if you and Nathan have any private dealings again, you'll be considered a corporate spy! Adoring Cupid will definitely surpass Pearl Wet, and then Nathan will have a hard time! I won't let him off!"
Penelope suddenly laughed.
Kelvin tightened his grip. "What are you laughing at!"
She looked up at him, a bit mockingly. "Kelvin, are you jealous?"
He was taken aback and replied disdainfully, "Of course not!"
"But you look just like a man driven mad by love," Penelope replied with a self-deprecating smile, "You don't love me, so why are you so angry?"
Kelvin responded, "Because you are mine, not even death can change that!"
Penelope raised her hand, gripping his wrist, deliberately provoking him. "Kelvin, your possessiveness is so strong, I'm really afraid you'll fall in love with me one day."
"Even if all the women in the world died, I wouldn't love you!" Kelvin flung her away and left in big strides.
Penelope breathed a sigh of relief.
She would have to be more cautious in the future and not let Fiona succeed in framing her again.
At the Davis Group, the "Adoring Cupid" press conference went smoothly, with Kelvin personally attending, and Timothy was there too.
This was a clear sign of how much the Davis Group valued their new jewelry brand, "Adoring Cupid"!
As soon as the news hit, The Smith Group's stock price took a nosedive.
In the employee cafeteria, Penelope was munching on her lunch while watching the live broadcast of the press conference.
"Is that all you're eating?" Monica plopped down with her tray. "No meat at all?"
Penelope shrugged, "I like veggies."
"Yeah, right. I know your meal card's out of money. Stop pretending," Monica said, piling her chicken leg and beef onto Penelope's plate.
Penelope looked a bit lost.
"Eat up, girl. You're skin and bones," Monica urged.
Penelope stammered, "Monica..."
"Yes, I'm foolish," Monica said. "I went out of my way to be kind to you."
Penelope's eyes welled up, and she hugged her. "Monica, you're the best."
Monica asked, "Seriously, Penelope, do you still want me as a friend?"
Penelope nodded like crazy. "Yes!"
"Good," Monica said firmly, "Then no more disappearing acts, got it?"
Penelope agreed, "Okay."
Monica quickly blinked away her tears, still grumbling, "Penelope, can't you toughen up a bit? Why are you crying?"
Penelope gave her a sweet smile.
"You can still smile," Fiona sauntered over. "Penelope, if I were you, I'd be hiding in shame."
Monica put down her knife and fork, sarcastically asking, "Why is it always you? Does being a mistress mean you have to haunt the legitimate wife too?"
"I'm the future Mrs. Davis of the Davis Group. What's wrong with taking a stroll in the cafeteria?" Fiona sneered, raising her chin to look at Penelope, "Did you like the 'gift' I sent you last night?"
Penelope shot back, "You're despicable and shameless."
Fiona smirked. "Just a small warning. Penelope, you'd better be polite to me from now on, got it?"
Penelope didn't want to engage. "Monica, let's go."
"Sure. Someone's talking nonsense here; it's ruining my appetite," Monica chimed in.
Fiona deliberately raised her hand to brush her hair, showing off the diamond bracelet on her wrist. After making sure Penelope saw it, she quickly lowered her hand, covering it with her sleeve. "Penelope, you'll never surpass me in this lifetime."
Penelope paused. "The diamond bracelet."
"Mr. Davis gave it to me," Fiona boasted, "He bought it and gave it to me. Think you can still get it?"
Penelope felt a pang in her heart but held it in. "Since it's yours now, take good care of it."
Fiona retorted, "I can do whatever I want with my diamond bracelet. Who do you think you are to tell me what to do? Even if I throw it, Mr. Davis won't care!"
Monica rolled her eyes. "Are you leaving or not? I'll call security. The company has rules; outsiders can't loiter!"
Fiona was taken aback. "You..."
Monica started counting, "One, two, three..."
"I'm leaving!" Fiona stomped her foot.
As she passed by Penelope, she deliberately shook her wrist, flaunting the diamond bracelet before strutting off.
In reality, the diamond bracelet wasn't with Fiona at all.
Kelvin had locked it in the safe at the King Manor.
But Fiona wasn't one to give up, so she bought a fake one just to mess with Penelope!
Seeing Penelope upset made her day!
"Monica, I'm sorry," Penelope sighed in the hallway. "For dragging you into this mess."
Monica came from a well-off family, was beautiful, and had a fiery temper; she wasn't one to take crap from anyone.
"And you don't suffer?" Monica shot back, "Penelope, you were once the darling of the Cooper Family, a star at school, admired by everyone! And now?"
