Chapter 1061 The Task of Protecting Penelope and Lucy is Yours

Watching Sam take the last sip of his cough syrup, his little face scrunched up in distaste. Kelvin quickly shoved a piece of candy into his mouth.

"Kelvin!" Sam whined, "Why didn't you have the candy ready before?"

"Sorry. I'm still getting the hang of this. Won't happen again."

"My mom's the best at this!"

"Yeah," Kelvin nodded, "She really is. She's done so much, taking care of everything and raising you two. You should be good to her and listen to her more."

Kelvin thought to himself, not being able to watch Sam and Lucy grow up was already a huge regret.

In the future, he wouldn't be able to see them start their own families either.

Another big regret.

Regrets are inevitable in life, but why were all of Kelvin's regrets tied to his family?

"Of course, she's my absolutely favorite person," Sam said, "The absolute favorite, no contest!"

Kelvin patted his head. "Feeling better?"

"Yeah, a bit!"

Sam sat on the couch, his little legs swinging back and forth.

"Kelvin, actually..." Sam looked at him, "You remain commendable indeed. I used to be mad at you because I didn't really get you. Sorry about that, it won't happen again."

Kelvin raised an eyebrow.

Was Sam really opening up to him and admitting his mistakes?

This was rare.

"I know," Kelvin replied, "You still blame me for not protecting you and your mom and sister from the start."

"Yeah, Mom had it really tough. I always wanted to grow up quickly so I could make lots of money and give her a stable life. I didn't want her staying up late drawing until her eyes were red."

"She went through so much, and then you just showed up and expected her to forgive you and like you?"

"But," Sam said, coughing a bit, "After watching you for a while, especially how you handled things when I was sick, I've decided—"

He said seriously, "To officially accept you!"

Kelvin looked at him and smiled.

"Dad, I'll love you like I love Mom, but you need to know your place. You can't compare to Mom. Don't try to compete for attention, don't get cocky, just keep doing well and keep it up!"

He wasn't as feverish or uncomfortable anymore, so he was back to his usual mischievous self.

But Kelvin still enjoyed his time alone with Sam.

He and Penelope had plenty of time together every night.

Lucy, being the daughter, was always sweet and affectionate.

But Sam... he was always doing his own thing, cool and unpredictable.

"Got it," Kelvin nodded, raising an eyebrow, "So, has my ranking in your heart gone up?"

Sam thought for a moment. "I'll move you up one spot."

"Just one spot?" Kelvin asked, "I'm not second? Besides Penelope, who else is ahead of me?"

"Grandpa," Sam answered confidently, "In my heart, Grandpa is second! You're now ahead of Grandma and Grandpa."

Kelvin was silent.

Liam would do anything for Sam and Lucy!

Whatever they wanted, he gave them!

Even if they didn't want something, he still gave it to them, afraid they'd miss out!

"Be content," Sam said, "I'll keep evaluating you, Dad. You still have a chance to move up to second place. But your ceiling is second place, don't even think about first."

"Thanks, buddy."

"No problem."

Sam had naturally started calling him Dad.

This was a true sign of acceptance.

Kelvin reached out and easily lifted Sam up.

Sam panicked. "Hey... what are you doing? I didn't do anything to provoke you, Dad! You're not really going to use force to make me admit you're my number one, are you?"

"No, let Penelope always be your number one."

Sam paused, then said instinctively, "Actually, I can let you and Mom share first place."

Just like Lucy said.

Dad and Mom are equally important; both can be number one!

Kelvin sat Sam on his lap. "Sam, besides me, you're the only man in the house."

"I know."

"If anything happens and I'm not around, you need to protect Penelope and Lucy, okay?"

"Of course! It's a man's duty to protect women!"

"Your mom... she's really been through a lot."

Kelvin knew how much Penelope had sacrificed and struggled, which is why he treated her so well, wanting to give her everything he had.

But life was unpredictable... no one knew what would come first, tomorrow or an accident.

For Kelvin, the accident had already arrived, heavy as a mountain.

He looked at Sam, imagining what he would be like as a grown-up, how much he would resemble him, how he would manage the Davis Group, whether he would take it to new heights, and whether he would have his own style.

"Wait," Sam suddenly thought of something, "Dad, why wouldn't you be around if something happened? Where would you go?"

"I'm just saying, hypothetically."

"You're either at work or at home every day, where else could you go?"

Kelvin raised an eyebrow. "So, you don't want to take responsibility and want me to handle everything?"

Sam shook his head quickly. "No, no, that's not what I meant. I was just curious why you wouldn't be around..."

After all, if something happened to Mom, Dad would be the most worried.

"I can't be with you all the time. Maybe I'll be on a business trip, maybe busy, maybe something else." Kelvin answered, "When I'm not around, I'll leave the task of protecting Penelope and Lucy to you."

"You don't need to give it to me, I'll protect them both anyway!"

Kelvin raised his hand. "Alright, high five."

They gave each other a strong high five!

Actually, Kelvin had a lot he wanted to tell Sam, but... he was afraid that if he said too much, Sam would pick up on something.

Don't be fooled by Sam's age; he's smart and quick-witted, even more so than Penelope.

Penelope might overlook things, not being very good at reading people, but Sam was a natural at it, effortlessly.

For now, this would have to do.
