Chapter 1056 You Give Me an Explanation

This was the best time.

The past was too rough, too winding, and the future... Kelvin thought...he had no future left.

"Yeah, now's good too, every day is good..." Penelope murmured, "Kelvin, did I change you? Turn you from being distant to gentle?"

"Yeah, it was you. Only you could change me."

She smiled, raised her hand to touch his face, making him look at her. "I need to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"I went looking for you after lunch today, but Ryan said you drove out alone and didn't come back until after work," Penelope said. "You even texted me to go back to The King Manor by myself."

Kelvin paused, pinching her nose lightly. "So that's what this is about..."

"Not just that."

Penelope didn't elaborate; she just pressed on, "Tell me, where were you all afternoon?"

"I went to see a client."

"A client?" Penelope asked, "What kind of big client is worth Mr. Davis personally visiting and spending so much time? Even neglecting his dear lover after work?"

Kelvin didn't expect her to suddenly question his schedule.

In his memory, Penelope rarely asked what he was doing, giving him plenty of freedom.

This freedom was given because of trust.

However, Kelvin quickly came up with a reason.

He was so smart and wise that it was easy to deceive her if he wanted to.

It just depended on whether he wanted to deceive her or not.

"Why aren't you answering?" Penelope propped herself up. "Quickly, I want an answer, no hesitation, no delay, hurry, hurry, hurry."

"I not only went to see a client, but I also went to the hospital."

"What? The hospital?"

Penelope didn't expect this answer.

"Yeah, the hospital," Kelvin said. "You always complain about my coughing, right? After seeing the client, I went to the hospital."

Half-truths are the easiest to believe, the most credible.

And he had evidence to back it up.

"The doctor prescribed me medication," Kelvin pointed out. "I put it over there. If you hadn't asked, I would have forgotten to take it tonight."

Penelope immediately got up. "How could you forget something as important as taking medication?"

She hurried to get water and the medicine.

She glanced at it.

It was indeed cough medicine. Connor was a doctor, and Penelope grew up with her father, so she knew a bit about it.

Kelvin replied, "If I'm not coughing, I forget to take it."

"If you only remember to take it when you cough, you'll never get better." Penelope scolded, "This medicine is three times a day, right?"

"Yeah."

"Alright, I'll keep an eye on you, make sure you take it on time and in the right amount."

Kelvin agreed.

After taking the medicine, Kelvin placed the water cup on the bedside table.

"Mrs. Davis," he teased, "Have your doubts been dispelled?"

Penelope pouted. "You passed."

"Why did you suddenly think of looking for me today, and even checking on me?"

"Just a whim, is that not allowed?"

"Allowed." Kelvin nodded. "You're welcome to check, best if you check every day, keep messaging me, asking what I'm doing, chatting with me, caring about me..."

Penelope covered his mouth.

The cold and silent Kelvin from before was really gone.

He had changed a lot.

He talked more and was more nagging, always caring about her eating, sleeping, and dressing.

"I don't have that kind of time," Penelope said. "Only when I feel something is off, I'll ask."

"Just one afternoon without seeing me, you felt something was off?"

"Yeah, you never had this situation before. And you were alone, no driver, no assistant, no bodyguard."

Kelvin replied calmly, "Too many people around, no moment of peace, wanted to be alone for a while."

He paused, then tightened his arms around her, his chin resting on her hair. "Don't worry, Penelope, no matter how off it seems... I'm just handling things, don't overthink. I could never betray you. I would never do anything to hurt you."

His body was hers, his heart was hers.

Always with her, unwavering, he couldn't take it back or move it away.

His lifelong love, only love, true love, was her.

Hearing his promise, Penelope asked directly, "Alright, since you say so, I'll be honest too. Kelvin, a few days ago, you said you were working late at the office, busy until midnight before coming back, do you remember?"

"I remember."

How could he forget?

That night was when he was diagnosed with lung cancer!

He was completely thrown off, not in the right state, unable to manage his emotions, so he chose to hide, to slowly sort out his thoughts, to slowly accept the reality of his illness.

"But," Penelope looked straight into his eyes, "I asked Timothy, I asked Ryan, they both said the company hasn't had any overtime recently, no important matters needing you to handle late into the night."

Kelvin's heart sank slightly.

She had noticed.

He didn't expect her to be so perceptive.

"Kelvin, I need you to give me an explanation," Penelope said. "I want to know the truth; you can't deceive me like this."

They stared at each other.

Kelvin's mind raced with countless thoughts.

Confess?

Reveal his illness?

Or continue to lie?

Or... test her attitude?

After a few seconds, Kelvin smiled.

"So my Penelope cares so much about me," Kelvin said. "I should be happy."

She frowned, her hands pressed against his chest. "Answer me first, clearly the company didn't need overtime, why did you come back so late? Where did you go? Was it the hospital, too?"

"How could I go to the hospital late at night? It's not an emergency or serious illness."

"Then where did you go?"

Kelvin replied, "I was at the company, in the office."

Penelope didn't speak, but her eyes were full of distrust.

Kelvin was still very confident, and he could still provide evidence.

Because that night, he was indeed in the office, not anywhere else.

He just wasn't working.

Another half-truth.

This was practically the highest level of lying!

Kelvin ruffled her hair. "Wait."

He picked up his phone and, in front of her, called Ryan.

"Hello... Mr. Davis." Ryan quickly answered. "What can I do for you?"

Ryan was used to Kelvin's calls at any time.

Wondering what was up tonight! Hopefully, it could be resolved quickly!

"Pull up the surveillance from my office," Kelvin said. "Send it to me."
