Chapter 996 Such a Good-Looking Person, It's a Pity to Die
Thessaly's relief was short-lived.
She glanced up to see two tall bodyguards blocking the doorway. "Ms. Winterbourne, you need to go back."
"But I..."
"Please, go back."
The bodyguards nudged her back into the study and shut the door behind her.
Thessaly stumbled, lost her footing, and hit the floor.
She tried to stand but felt utterly drained... her back was soaked with cold sweat!
"The floor's no place to be," Brandon said, strolling over and offering his hand. "Come on, Thessaly, let me help you up."
He was so smooth, so gentlemanly.
But all Thessaly felt was a chill and a growing fear.
After a moment's hesitation, she took his hand. With a gentle tug, Brandon pulled her to her feet.
She ended up in his arms.
Before she could react, Brandon's hand was around her throat!
"I'm done playing games..." Brandon's true colors showed. "Thessaly, I must confess I underestimated you, keeping up the disguise for so long. If I hadn't been suspicious, you might've pulled it off!"
"That day in my office, you were fixing your makeup in the bathroom. How could you not hear anything? Headphones? Smart move, real smart!"
"Even with headphones, you'd notice people talking and moving around. The second you took them off and caught a word between Paul and me, you wouldn't have put them back on!"
His grip tightened!
Thessaly felt herself choking, struggling for air!
"I... I..." she gasped, "didn't... didn't..."
"Still denying it!"
Brandon's forehead veins popped, showing the force of his grip.
It was more than Thessaly could handle!
Her lungs screamed for air... Was this how she'd die, at Brandon's hands?
"Admit it!" Brandon demanded. "Admit it, and I'll let you go!"
"No... I didn't..."
Thessaly stubbornly held her ground.
"You're really not afraid of dying, huh?" Brandon said, "The evidence is stacked against you, and you're still lying! You look so fragile, but you're tough as nails!"
"Tell me! Thessaly, you heard everything in the office that day. After you left, you called Kelvin. Did you spill everything to him?"
Thessaly's eyes widened.
How did he know she called Kelvin?
Brandon caught her reaction and pressed on, "I've been suspicious of you from the start, never let it go. I've checked out everything you've done and said. Thessaly, are you sure you want to choose Kelvin over me?"
He looked like a demon, all malice and cruelty, nothing left of the gentleman he pretended to be!
Thessaly shut her eyes.
The lack of oxygen was making her dizzy... If this kept up, she'd really suffocate.
Tears slipped from her eyes.
What hurt Thessaly most wasn't just being caught by Brandon, but realizing he'd been faking it all along, never truly caring for her!
He could hold her, kiss her, care for her, yet then flip the switch, wanting her dead!
Brandon could fake love and then turn cold as ice!
He never loved her... Thessaly realized. She had hoped that maybe, over time, they'd develop some feelings for each other, even just a little.
But she was wrong.
Brandon's cruelty was beyond anything she could've imagined!
"Thessaly!" Brandon's voice suddenly cut through her thoughts. "Do you really want to die?"
She couldn't speak, so she gave a slight nod.
Death.
Death would be a relief.
She hadn't gotten the evidence and had instead been caught by Brandon!
Only now did Thessaly understand why Kelvin had warned her to prioritize her safety.
Brandon was truly capable of murder!
Kelvin had seen through Brandon's nature long ago, but Thessaly had clung to naive fantasies!
But then... a spark of hope flickered in Thessaly's mind.
She remembered Kelvin had given her an alarm device, telling her to keep it on her whenever she was with Brandon!
This alarm was linked to Kelvin's phone. As soon as Thessaly pressed it, Kelvin would get the alert!
She still had a chance!
With her fading consciousness, Thessaly tried to remember where she'd stashed the alarm... the hidden pocket on the outside of her dress... yes, it was in the pocket!
Her dress was a high-end brand, designed with both style and practicality. At first glance, it seemed pocketless, but a closer look revealed two hidden pockets.
Thessaly's hand slowly reached into the pocket... if she could just press it, she might be saved.
Kelvin would find a way to rescue her.
Brandon didn't notice Thessaly's subtle movements because he was fixated on her eyes.
"Such a pretty face, what a waste if you died," Brandon said. "Your career's just taking off, you're so young, how could you bear to die like this?"
"Thessaly, a smart person knows when to back down!"
Brandon slightly loosened his grip.
Air rushed into Thessaly's throat.
She wasn't suffocating as badly!
At the same time, Thessaly felt the alarm button.
Press it? Or not?
Just as she decided to press it, she hesitated.
She hadn't found the evidence yet, and now she was exposed. If she called Kelvin to rescue her, then what... how would she get the evidence against Brandon? How would she clear Penelope's name?
Penelope had treated her with extraordinary kindness, and Thessaly wanted Penelope to know the truth and see Brandon's true colors.
Thessaly also wanted Brandon to face justice!
If Kelvin came to rescue her, it would mean revealing everything, and she wouldn't be able to stay by Brandon's side anymore!
After careful consideration, Thessaly released the alarm.
Meanwhile, at The King Manor.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom; Penelope was taking a shower.
Kelvin stood by the window, glancing at the silent phone on the bed.
He had a bad feeling, and his instincts were usually spot on.
Thessaly's situation must be dire.
But Kelvin hadn't received any alert from the alarm.
As soon as Thessaly pressed the button, his phone would receive the alert and quickly locate her position.
