Chapter 39
"Where do you think you're going?" Fiona blocked her path. "You need to stay here and be ready to give blood until my dad wakes up and gets better!"
Penelope shrugged off her hand and walked out with determination.
She grabbed a bite outside the hospital and finally felt a bit of strength coming back.
"Mrs. Davis," a shadow loomed over her, and there stood Ryan. "Mr. Davis wants me to take you back to King Manor."
She nodded. "Let me finish eating first."
She felt like crying.
But she couldn't; her tears meant nothing.
Back at King Manor, Penelope's stomach growled again.
But it was so late, where could she find food?
She rummaged through the kitchen and finally spotted a thermal container on the table, filled with the nourishing soup Lily brought every day.
Perfect!
She had just given blood and needed to replenish her nutrients!
Penelope eagerly started to eat, but just as she was about to take a bite, Kelvin's voice came from the doorway, "Hold on."
She turned and looked at him.
"What's the problem?" Penelope asked flatly. "Can't I even eat something?"
Kelvin walked over with a stern face and took the thermal container away. "You can eat anything, but not this."
Penelope was baffled. "Why not? You used to force me to drink it! Now..."
Now that she needed the soup to recover, he wouldn't let her have it!
The day's pent-up frustrations finally burst out.
Penelope demanded, "Kelvin, do I have any human rights left? What do you want from me? You even interfere when I try to eat in the middle of the night? Are you that bored? How long do you plan to torture me?"
Kelvin's face darkened. "How dare you talk to me like that? You ungrateful woman!"
He was stopping her for her own good!
The soup was drugged!
And yet, Penelope didn't appreciate his good intentions!
She was really thankless!
"Have you ever been good to me?" Penelope shot back, "All you do is find new ways to humiliate me!"
"Even if I'm good to you, you don't appreciate it!" Kelvin threw the thermal container to the ground.
The soup splattered everywhere.
The loud noise startled Jeff, who rushed to the kitchen. Seeing the scene, he was at a loss for words. "Mr. Davis."
Kelvin snapped, "Get out!"
Jeff nodded. "Yes, sir."
Kelvin ordered, "Tell Lily not to bring any more soup from today! No one will drink her soup!"
Jeff responded, "Okay."
It was strange, he had asked Kelvin before if they should refuse the soup, and Kelvin had said to keep it.
Why did he change his mind today?
Penelope bit her lower lip hard to keep her tears from falling.
Kelvin abused her, bullied her, made her make up, supported Fiona, and forced her to give blood to save Michael.
She truly hated him.
"Kelvin, if one day you realize you should never have treated me this way," Penelope stubbornly looked up at him. "How much will you regret it?"
Kelvin sneered, "Regret? There's no regret in my life!"
Penelope took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "How much longer until you marry Fiona? Let's get divorced as soon as possible. I'm willing to go back to the mental hospital and be imprisoned for life."
Kelvin mocked, "You think you can go back whenever you want? You."
"I have no choice," Penelope interrupted him, "Isn't that what you were going to say?"
Kelvin squinted at her, raised his hand, and forcefully pinched her chin. "Penelope, are you being sarcastic because you're unwilling? Just because of drawing a little blood?"
Penelope replied, "Because I didn't harm Michael, and I have no obligation to give blood to save him."
Kelvin insisted, "The surveillance footage is crystal clear!"
Penelope asked, "What you see is the truth? Forget it, Kelvin, you don't believe me. Saying more is useless."
Fiona was the one he favored.
Kelvin snorted coldly and let go of her, "Even if you didn't harm him, you still have to draw your blood. Your life is worthless!"
He turned and left.
Penelope looked down at the broken pieces on the ground, stepped over them, and continued searching the fridge for food.
After eating, she returned to the master bedroom and lay on the floor beside the bed.
She curled up into a ball, her hands tightly pressed against her stomach.
She didn't know how long she had slept when she heard footsteps approaching from outside the door.
Penelope wanted to open her eyes, but she had no strength.
"Penelope, get up here!"
It was Kelvin's voice.
She mumbled a response but didn't move.
Kelvin looked at her sleeping form, heard the footsteps nearing the door, and without thinking, grabbed her shoulder and pulled her onto the bed.
As he tucked Penelope into the blanket, the door opened.
Liam stood at the door with a cane, smiling, "Still not up?"
"Yeah," Kelvin replied. "Grandpa Liam, why are you here?"
He held Penelope in his arms and pulled the blanket up. "She's still asleep, don't mind her, Grandpa Liam."
"I understand," Liam nodded. "You must have tired her out. Let her sleep a bit more."
Kelvin nodded. "Thanks, Grandpa."
Penelope opened her eyes and saw Kelvin's chest close to her. She was stunned for a few seconds. "What're you doing?"
"Nothing," Kelvin said gently, "Don't worry about it, go back to sleep."
Liam uttered, "Alright, I was just passing by and thought I'd check in. I won't disturb you."
Penelope blinked and looked towards the door, finally realizing. "Grandpa Liam, you're here."
"Never mind, pretend I was never here," Liam spoke as he turned to leave, adding, "Kelvin, keep going."
Penelope was in a daze for a long time before she came to her senses.
Liam had come to check on them and had already finished his inspection.
"You stupid woman, be smarter next time," Kelvin pushed her away. "If my grandpa senses something's wrong, you know the consequences."
He got out of bed, his broad shoulders and narrow waist on display, and slowly buttoned his shirt.
Kelvin was quite tempting.
This scene was like a movie.
But Penelope had no interest in admiring it.
She looked at his back. "Since Mr. Liam Davis wants a child so much, you can have one with Fiona. Start working on it now, and by the time you remarry, she should be pregnant."
Kelvin paused in buttoning his shirt, his face darkening. "Shut up."
Penelope uttered, "I'm just telling the truth. You like her, and she's willing."
"I won't sleep with her casually," Kelvin replied, "I'll give her a legitimate status before talking about that."
Penelope chuckled, "You won't or you can't?"
Kelvin slowly turned, his eyes cold. "What did you say?"
