Chapter 986 Did He Cough Blood?
Sam paused, thinking it over. "Even if you don't have any competition right now, you still gotta treat Mom like a queen. Better every day, no slacking, and definitely don't take her for granted!"
Kelvin grinned. "Yeah, yeah, I got it."
How could he not have any competition?
Brandon was still his biggest rival!
Before, Brandon was out in the open; now, he was lurking in the shadows.
We would see about that!
"Dad, try this strawberry," Lucy said, handing him the biggest, juiciest one. "It's super sweet."
"Thanks, Lucy."
The sweet juice slid down his throat, but Kelvin felt a tickle.
He couldn't help but cough.
It took him a bit to catch his breath and stop.
"Why are you still coughing?" Penelope asked, worried. "Didn't you quit smoking?"
She'd been keeping tabs on him, and Kelvin hadn't smoked in a while.
No cigarettes at the office or home.
"Probably just went down the wrong pipe," Kelvin replied. "I'm good."
Penelope frowned. "You're not a kid anymore, choking on fruit."
"Yeah, take it easy," Sam added. "No one's gonna snatch it from you. You bought them, remember?"
Lucy handed him a glass of water. "Here, Dad, have a sip."
"Oh, by the way," Penelope remembered, "didn't you go to the hospital for a check-up? Did you get a lung CT?"
"I did. The results are out."
"Everything okay?"
Kelvin chuckled softly. "Of course, Penelope. I'm in great shape, and I'll be with you for a long time."
He knew his health well. He had regular check-ups every year, and the results were always perfectly normal.
Besides, Kelvin wouldn't allow himself to have any health issues.
He had to be there for Penelope, to grow old together, to see their hair turn gray. To achieve that, he needed to stay healthy and strong.
In the past, Kelvin didn't care much, thinking life and death were up to fate.
But now, things were different. He had attachments, responsibilities. If something happened to him, what would Penelope do?
He couldn't bear to leave her alone in this world.
He had to live well, to protect her.
"Kelvin, you need to take care of yourself. No smoking, drink less, don't stay up late. Please let me know if anything comes up. We're partners," Penelope said, looking at him. "I want us to be honest, open, and loving."
"Of course."
He ruffled her hair. "Stop overthinking. Penelope, you too, health first. We need to watch our kids grow up, see them get married."
"Okay!"
Seeing Penelope's smile, the itch in Kelvin's throat eased a bit.
He took another sip of water.
Last time, at Penelope's insistence, he went to the hospital for a full lung check-up, including his bronchial tubes.
Everything was fine.
Kelvin felt reassured. It's normal for someone who smoked for years to cough occasionally.
The TV continued playing, with his loved ones nearby and the kids playing—a cozy family scene.
But then... Kelvin felt the itch in his throat again.
He coughed lightly, trying to suppress it, not wanting to worry Penelope.
However, the more he held back, the stronger the urge to cough became, making his throat uncomfortable.
With no choice, Kelvin stood up. "I'm going to the bathroom."
Penelope nodded.
Once he left, Kelvin clenched his fist to his mouth, coughing heavily, trying to keep it quiet.
Only when he reached the bathroom and closed the door did he let himself cough freely.
The coughing didn't stop, growing more intense.
Kelvin turned on the faucet, using the sound of running water to cover his coughs.
He leaned on the sink, one hand over his mouth.
After a while, Kelvin lowered his hand.
In his palm... a streak of red.
Kelvin's brow furrowed deeply.
Blood? How could there be blood? Was he coughing up blood?
Suddenly, alarm bells rang in Kelvin's mind!
His cough had been on and off, sometimes mild, sometimes severe, with no pattern.
But... it shouldn't lead to coughing up blood!
Why!?
Kelvin quickly washed away the red streak, not daring to look at it again.
He had been checked, and everything was fine. What was going on?
Kelvin looked up at his reflection in the mirror.
Silver hair, handsome face, high nose bridge, with a few fine lines at the corners of his eyes—not very noticeable, adding a mature charm.
He was happy now, with everything revolving around him.
"It'll be fine. I'm overthinking. Maybe it's just the dry weather..." Kelvin muttered to himself. "A little blood, what's the big deal?"
He'd make time for another check-up.
He really couldn't afford to have anything wrong... He needed to be there for Penelope, to watch Sam and Lucy grow up.
When Kelvin returned to the living room, only the TV was still on.
It was playing a show starring Thessaly.
"Mr. Davis," the butler approached. "Mrs. Davis took the kids upstairs to rest."
He nodded, asking casually, "Give me the doctor's number. I have something to ask him."
"Yes, sir."
With the doctor's number in hand, Kelvin dialed directly.
"Last time, I had a lung check because of my cough. All the results confirmed no abnormalities," Kelvin asked. "Is that right?"
"Yes, Mr. Davis. Your lung condition is quite good. My advice is to smoke less, and quitting would be even better."
"Is there any chance of a mistake?"
The doctor replied immediately, "This is a health matter; there won't be any mistakes. And you're one of our top clients. We had the most professional and authoritative pulmonologist examine you. You can rest assured."
The Davis Group had a partnership with this hospital.
Every year, the company's routine health checks were done here, and even the hospital director treated Kelvin with utmost respect. How could they possibly mess up Kelvin's results?
"Got it." Kelvin was about to hang up when he suddenly thought of something. "Keep this matter completely confidential. Don't disclose anything to anyone."
"Understood, Mr. Davis."
Kelvin held his phone, quietly gazing out the window.
He glanced around; the large side room was empty except for him.
No one heard the call.
Of course, no one dared to listen!
As Kelvin was about to head to the master bedroom, his phone rang again.
This time, it was Thessaly calling.
"Hello."
"I just got home," Thessaly said. "It's just me here, very safe."
"What about the bug Brandon planted?"
