Chapter 1054 Not Concerned About Side Effects and Aftereffects
"It was years ago, I can't really remember," Timothy said. "Anyway, the company's been doing great these past couple of years. Everything's been smooth sailing. We haven't had to pull any all-nighters or work overtime."
Penelope had asked Timothy several times, and the answer was always the same.
No late nights, no overtime.
So, what was Kelvin doing that night?
Was it something to do with Thessaly? But he never met Thessaly alone; he always avoided any appearance of impropriety.
Besides... it was nighttime.
Penelope already had no appetite, and thinking about this made her feel even worse.
Maybe... she should just ask him directly?
Her constant guessing and speculating were making her feel miserable and frustrated. She hated being troubled by these emotions!
Between husband and wife, honesty was key; there should be no suspicion!
Penelope decided to ask him when she got home, or maybe before bed tonight.
But she was getting impatient, because it had been a long time since there was any suspicion between them.
So, after lunch, during her break, Penelope went to the CEO's office.
"Mrs. Davis," Ryan greeted her warmly, "What brings you here?"
"I'm here to see Kelvin, of course. Is he in his office?"
"Unfortunately, Mr. Davis is out."
Penelope paused for a moment. "Where did he go?"
Ryan also paused, "Mr. Davis didn't say, so I'm not sure."
Kelvin had left alone with his car keys, his expression indifferent, not in a good mood. Ryan hadn't dared to ask.
It was probably something personal.
But Ryan thought Penelope would know, but she didn't.
Penelope asked, "Was he alone? Or did the driver take him?"
"Mr. Davis drove himself."
Strange.
Where did he go?
"Mrs. Davis, is there something important you need to discuss with Mr. Davis? You could call or video chat him," Ryan joked lightly, "You could check up on him. There's no one in the world more suited to check up on him than you."
Penelope smiled.
She didn't have the habit of checking up on him, nor had she ever thought of doing so.
To her, love was about mutual trust, but also having personal space and freedom.
She didn't like to be too controlling.
Love is free and romantic; marriage is disciplined and honest.
Penelope rarely interfered with Kelvin's freedom. Where he went, what he did, who he met, she didn't ask much. Instead, Kelvin often reported to her voluntarily.
She always believed that loving someone meant giving them freedom.
Those who wanted to leave can't be kept; those who wanted to stay won't leave.
"Never mind, I don't have anything urgent, just wanted to see him." Penelope said, "You go ahead and get back to work, Ryan."
"Alright, Mrs. Davis, take care."
Ryan quickly stepped forward to press the elevator button for her.
As she left, Penelope casually asked, "Is it busy lately? Are you guys in the secretarial office working overtime often?"
Ryan laughed and replied, "Mr. Davis doesn't work overtime; he goes home to be with you and the kids. We assistants revolve around him; if he's not busy, we can't be busy either."
Penelope smiled too.
"Mrs. Davis, meeting you is our good fortune," Ryan said softly, "Thanks to your good luck."
The elevator doors slowly closed.
As they fully shut, the smile on Penelope's face disappeared.
She had finally gathered the courage to ask Kelvin what he was doing that night, but... she missed him.
Penelope was more reserved, not as outgoing and cheerful as Monica, nor as resilient and brave as Thessaly. But under Kelvin's daily love and care, she had slowly grown into a better and more confident version of herself.
When it came to relationships, she didn't have much experience and often kept things to herself.
The courage she had gathered now, she wasn't sure if it would last until she got home tonight... to ask Kelvin face-to-face.
Penelope hung her head.
She took out her phone, opened Kelvin's chat, thought about typing something, but deleted it all.
She wanted to call, but hesitated to dial.
Frustrated!
Penelope put away her phone.
Forget it, she'll deal with it tonight!
A black Maybach drove discreetly and finally stopped in the hospital's underground parking lot.
Kelvin, wearing a mask and sunglasses, quietly entered the doctor's office.
"Mr. Davis." The doctor felt a jolt of anxiety upon seeing him.
"Prescribe me some cough medicine."
Kelvin's instructions were brief.
He didn't even want to undergo any more useless tests, which would only reveal the progression of his illness.
Pointless.
The doctor nodded, but couldn't help asking, "Mr. Davis, have you considered treatment?"
"Chemotherapy?"
"Yes, Mr. Davis."
Kelvin was silent for a few seconds, then replied, "I'm still considering it. Just prescribe the medicine."
"Just treating the cough won't address the root cause..."
"Stop wasting time!"
Kelvin was impatient.
He was always coughing, which would make Penelope suspicious. If she found out about his illness, how devastated and hopeless would she be!
He wanted to protect her, to keep her carefree.
Unexpectedly... his body had betrayed him.
Kelvin was still hesitating, still wavering.
He hadn't decided whether to hide his illness and force Penelope to leave him, so she wouldn't have to bear the fear brought by his sickness... or to face it together with her.
If he forced her to leave, he would need a way to make her let go, hate him, not care about him, forget him... If he kept her, he would have to start chemotherapy.
He would become ugly, lose all his hair, and become haggard and exhausted.
Actually, the balance in Kelvin's heart... leaned towards forcing Penelope to leave.
He loved her too much; he couldn't bear for her to know the truth and face the illness!
"Mr. Davis, the medicine... It's ready, a month's supply," the doctor said. "Three times a day, after meals."
"How effective is it for the cough?"
"It mainly clears the lungs and soothes the throat."
"I want the strongest effect," Kelvin said. "I don't care about side effects or aftereffects."
Just stop the cough first!
At his insistence, the doctor prescribed another medication.
Only then did Kelvin leave, and he instructed, "Don't tell anyone."
"Understood... Mr. Davis."
However, just five minutes after Kelvin left, the man who had previously threatened the doctor under the table... returned.
"What did Kelvin say?"
The doctor confessed everything, honestly, without a single omission.
"Good." The man said, placing a thick stack of money on the table. "Well done. Keep it up, and there will be more rewards, each time more than the last. You won't be shortchanged, understand?"
The doctor asked, "Will I live to spend this money?"
