Chapter 1079 Dad is on a Business Trip

"Mr. Davis, I'm here!" Ryan called out.

Kelvin glanced at him.

To be honest, Ryan was one of his trusted aides.

But for now, he couldn't tell Ryan the truth.

Because Ryan knew Penelope, and if he decided to take matters into his own hands and tell her about Kelvin's illness, it could engender considerable complications.

Better to keep it a secret for now. The fewer people who knew, the better.

The King Manor.

Penelope got home at 8 PM.

"Mommy!" Lucy asked, "Did you work late again? Or were you out with Daddy?"

She looked around behind Penelope. "Where's Daddy?"

Sam, hearing that Kelvin wasn't home, also looked over.

Penelope forced a smile and knelt down to ruffle Lucy's hair. "He's on a business trip."

"A business trip?" Lucy asked, "What's a business trip?"

Penelope was taken aback.

In Lucy's little world, there was no concept of a business trip.

Back in their small town, Penelope could work from home, and occasionally she needed to go to the store, but she never had to leave town.

Since moving to LA, Kelvin had never gone on a business trip either. He always sent his subordinates and commuted between home and the office every day.

No matter how late, he always came home.

"A business trip is when you travel far away for work," Sam's voice chimed in. "You didn't know that?"

"How far did Daddy go?"

Penelope replied, "He went very far away. He'll be gone for a week, Lucy. He won't be home this week, and he'll be very busy."

Lucy pouted. "Why does he have to go on a business trip? I've never heard of this before. It sounds like a bad thing. I hope Daddy never has to go on a business trip again."

Sam added, "Dad probably doesn't want to go either, but it's for work. Come on, Lucy, he has to make money to support our family!"

"Alright, alright. Daddy will video call when he can, and it's just a week. It'll go by quickly."

Lucy nodded and didn't say anything more.

But Sam wasn't done. "For Lucy and me, it's not a big deal. A week will fly by. But Mom, what about you?"

"Me?"

"Yeah, you're the one who'll have the hardest time. Waking up in the morning without Dad's good morning kiss. Going to bed without his goodnight kiss. Your bed will be empty and cold... You'll be all alone! Isn't that tough?"

Penelope fell silent.

He sure talked a lot!

But thinking about it... If Kelvin really were on a business trip for a week, she would definitely have trouble sleeping without him.

At least he's not on a business trip; he's in the hospital... Forget it, a business trip might be better!

Shaking off those thoughts, Penelope tapped Sam on the head. "Alright, enough with the talking."

She almost got carried away by his words, thinking about things far off.

During Kelvin's hospital stay, she would be by his side, day and night.

So... she wouldn't be sleeping alone!

And once he's discharged, he'll be back home.

"It's getting late," Penelope said. "You two need to take a bath and go to bed early, got it?"

Lucy looked at the clock. "Mom, it's only eight. You usually tell us to go to bed at eight-thirty."

Penelope wanted Sam and Lucy to go to bed early so she could head to the hospital to be with Kelvin.

"Exactly," Sam chimed in. "And with Dad on a business trip, why are we going to bed so early? We could keep you company."

"Yeah, yeah," Lucy said eagerly. "Mom, how about I sleep with you? Daddy's not here, and you'll be so lonely."

Sam immediately objected. "I'm a boy, I can protect Mom. I should sleep with her. What if there are monsters at night? I can fight them off! Can you, Lucy?"

Suddenly, the conversation turned into a competition over who would sleep with Mommy.

Penelope had taught Sam and Lucy to be independent. So from a young age, they each slept in their own rooms. She didn't sleep with them. Only when Lucy was sick and needed care did she sleep with her.

Now, with Kelvin "on a business trip," the spot next to Penelope in bed was empty. Sam and Lucy both really wanted to sleep with Mommy!

"I... I can't," Lucy admitted. "But I sleep quietly and won't disturb Mommy!"

"I won't disturb her either!" Sam retorted.

"You will!"

Sam shook his head. "Not only will I not disturb her, but I can also protect her. What about you? If there are monsters, you'll need Mommy to protect you!"

Lucy was indignant. "I can protect Mommy too! Protecting Mommy isn't just for boys; girls can do it too!"

"But," Sam countered, "Dad told me to protect Mommy and you."

"I, I, you..."

Lucy was at a loss for words. But she was Lucy, and she wouldn't back down easily. Sam wasn't always a match for her!

Quickly, Lucy said, "Fine, then you sleep with me and protect me. Mommy is a grown-up; she can protect herself!"

Sam was stunned. What just happened? Weren't they arguing about who could sleep with Mommy? Suddenly... he was sleeping with Lucy?

If Dad were on a business trip for a week, and he could sleep with Mommy for a week, that would be amazing. He'd have sweet dreams every night! Every kid wants to sleep with their parents!

Penelope watched Sam and Lucy's serious debate, trying not to laugh.

"Alright, you two, go back to your own rooms and sleep, just like before," Penelope said. "I can sleep by myself. I'm an adult, and you two are kids. You don't need to worry about me."

Lucy said, "Mommy is always a princess and needs protection!"

Sam added, "Kelvin said we should spoil you like a child. It's my duty!"

Penelope couldn't hold back and laughed. "Yes, yes, I know you both love me and want to keep me company at night," she said. "But I don't need it, okay?"

Actually, they both wanted to sleep with her, but she cleverly said they wanted to keep her company. Penelope was skilled in parenting, always knowing how to phrase things nicely.

After all, no matter how well-behaved and understanding Sam and Lucy were, there would always be some friction and disagreements. At times like these, a parent needed to mediate the circumstances.
