Chapter 865 I Thought, Penelope, You Didn't Want Me Anymore
"Good thing last night's dinner was a last-minute plan," Thessaly said. "If any paparazzi had gotten wind of my schedule and staked out the hotel, who knows what kind of stories they'd make up if they caught me alone with Mr. Davis."
Penelope looked up suddenly. "Wait, you mean there were no paparazzi last night?"
"Yeah, exactly. My agency and I are pretty good at dodging them. I was supposed to be doing an interview with a fashion magazine last night, but I postponed it to attend Mr. Davis's dinner. So, the paparazzi should have been waiting outside the magazine's office."
But if Thessaly's right...
Where did the paparazzi who took those photos come from?
"Did many people know about your change of plans?" Penelope asked.
"Just my driver and my assistant."
That's odd.
Where did the paparazzi come from?
The photos were definitely taken and sent to the Davis Group's PR department. She had seen them herself.
According to Kelvin and Thessaly, the actions in the photos did happen, but they were taken out of context.
And it seemed like Thessaly didn't even know about the photos.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem?" Thessaly asked, looking at her. "Penelope, you can ask me anything. I have nothing to hide from you."
Thessaly had laid all her cards on the table, even her slight feelings of affection.
She genuinely wanted to be friends with Penelope and didn't want to be the kind of person she herself despised.
Penelope shook her head. "It's nothing."
"But you looked really upset when you came in."
Thessaly was a bit on edge, but now Penelope's expression had returned to normal, much like when they first met.
"Oh, just some work stuff. It's been a bit stressful," Penelope smiled. "Sorry about that."
"I'm the one interrupting you. It's work hours, after all."
"No worries." Penelope raised her cup. "Thanks for the coffee."
Thessaly felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
And Penelope's heart felt lighter too.
"There's no need to thank me. If you like it, I can get you coffee every day," Thessaly said. "You and Mr. Davis have helped me so much, I could never repay you."
"Helping you is also helping Adoring Cupid. Besides, we were meant to meet. Once you become our spokesperson, make sure to fulfill your duties well, bring more exposure and recognition to the brand, and boost sales!"
Thessaly replied earnestly, "That's my job and my responsibility. I'll do my best, I promise!"
Penelope blinked playfully. "And once your contract transfers over, you'll be free. The Davis Group won't restrict you or control you with a contract. You can take on any role you want and follow your own path. I'm looking forward to seeing you win another Best Actress award!"
"I won't let you down."
"Good luck." Penelope stood up. "I have to get back to work. Let's catch up properly next time."
Thessaly stood up too. "Sure. Honestly, I feel much better after talking to you. Penelope, you're very lucky. Keep being happy. Mr. Davis loves you very much."
It's the kind of love any woman would envy.
Loyal, passionate, unwavering, unchanging.
A lifetime commitment to one person.
Being chosen so steadfastly is a rare thing.
So many people love and then part, part and then drift away, lost in the crowd.
"You'll meet someone who loves you deeply, too," Penelope said. "You're so talented, independent, and beautiful. There are plenty of admirers! Bye!"
"Bye."
Watching Penelope leave, Thessaly's eyes were full of envy.
When would she meet her destined one?
Back at the Davis Group, Penelope was clearly in a much better mood.
It was just a misunderstanding.
Kelvin and Thessaly were innocent, just pawns in someone's scheme.
But who was this schemer?
Penelope couldn't figure out if this person was targeting Kelvin or Thessaly.
It had to be Kelvin, since Thessaly hadn't even received the photos.
Threatening Kelvin? Who would be so bold, and for what?
She was still pondering when the elevator doors opened.
Penelope was about to step in when she felt a tight grip around her waist. She was pulled away from the elevator and quickly led to another private elevator nearby!
Once inside, the doors closed, shutting out all outside noise and views.
Penelope looked up and, seeing who it was, stomped her foot in frustration.
"Kelvin! You scared me!"
She had thought it was some bad guy trying to kidnap her! She was about to scream for help!
"Where did you go?" Kelvin asked. "Penelope, I've been looking everywhere for you, calling you nonstop. Do you know how worried and scared I was?"
After leaving the PR department, Kelvin was heading back to his office, but decided to check the jewelry department instead.
But Penelope wasn't there.
He asked Tina and Timothy, and they didn't know either.
Timothy even said Penelope looked furious, almost as angry as Kelvin at his worst.
Kelvin had panicked.
He thought she had left him in a fit of anger!
Penelope huffed and turned to watch the elevator numbers rise. "It's none of your business where I go."
"Of course, you're free to go wherever, Penelope. But why didn't you answer your phone?"
Penelope hadn't even realized Kelvin had called her.
Her phone was in her bag, and she hadn't taken it out.
She hadn't heard it ring.
"I just went out for a bit, and you're acting like a watchdog. Kelvin, what do you want?" Penelope said. "I didn't want to answer. Can't I have some time alone? Do I have to answer your calls?"
She leaned against the elevator, glancing at him before turning away again.
Kelvin sighed, his voice softening. "Penelope, I thought you..."
"Thought what? That I secretly went to see some guy to get back at you and Thessaly for being close?"
"Don't say things you don't mean." Kelvin stepped forward, trapping her between the elevator wall and his arms. "I just thought, Penelope, that you didn't want me anymore."
Penelope was taken aback.
Didn't want him anymore? What did that mean?
"Like four years ago, when you left me," Kelvin's voice was low. "You just left, and it was so long before I saw you again. You left me all alone. Penelope, I'm terrified of that happening again."
He had been frantically calling her, even planning to check the security footage to track her down!
Luckily, as soon as he stepped out of the elevator, he saw her.
